Most folks who aspire to thru-hike (complete the entire length of the trail in one season) the Appalachian Trail begin at the southern terminus, Springer Mountain in Georgia. They start at Amicalola Falls State Park and hike the approach trail to the beginning of the AT. Even though we were doing only a small section, we thought we might as well begin at what most would consider the beginning. May 8, 2007 - Stone Mtn
Arrived at Bald Mountain Park in Hiawassee, GA. yesterday afternoon. This is a very nice park in the mountains in Northern Georgia. The only noise problem comes from the resident geese at the nearby small lake. Went on a 100 mile ride which included the Brasstown National Scenic Byway. Took a side trip to Helen which is a different town. About 30 years ago it was just another small town dying from lack of interest by most people. Then the town leaders decided to take action and they changed it into a poor replica of a Swiss-German village....
