May 9, 2013 - Charleston, SC to Skidaway Island, GA

Day 7 part deux: Destination Savannah, GA We left our amazing hosts this morning to head over to Savannah. Thanks Joe and Megan for allowing us to take over your small apartment and for showing us around. We all had a fantastic time and wish we could have spent another two weeks with you! I hope your engagement pictures were awesome today. I experienced a weird feeling today... hunger. That is until we got to The Wilkes House. So. Much. Food... It was ridiculous. We had to wait outside for about 25 minutes, but when you get inside, you...

Mar 4, 2012 - Day #12

Day 12, Feb 29/12, Wednesday: Off to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge this a.m. Man, what a spot, again an old rice plantation now flooded into a huge wetlands with dry “hamocks”, small islands, spread throughout the 30,000 acres. A 4.5 mile drive cuts through it offering fantastic birding opportunities. Starting to see some “southern” bird species, White & Glossy Ibises, Anhingas, etc. Temp topped off at approx 28 C and we were both in shorts and T-shirts all day. Returned via a highway that took us by the Georgia Ocean Port...

Mar 4, 2012 - Day #11

Day 11, February 28/12, Tuesday Toured Savanna this a.m. A very unique city and they've done a great job in restoration and marketing. Preping for the 2nd largest St. Patrick's Day parade in N.A. Very busy salt water harbour on a very narrow river – amazing watching the tugs handle the traffic. Moved on north to Hilton Head this afternoon – lots of people, lots of traffic, appeared to be lots of money! At some point we felt we had driven for 35 minutes+ and there was always a golf course beside us on one side or the other. A great walk...

Mar 4, 2012 - Day #10

Day 10, February 27/12, Monday: Added additional pictures to Day #9 The skies opened at about 5:00 a.m. and it poured all morning. Brenda was content to sit & read so I did the shopping and found this wonderful bar where they love having old farts sit and send messages on email as they suck on a couple? of “Stellsa's”. I guess you'd call this a “camp day” in northern terminology. Watched the NASCAR race from Daytona tonight.

Mar 4, 2012 - Day #13

Day 13, Mar 1/12, Thursday: Somewhat cooler & cloudy (17 C). Decided to drive out to the coast at Tybee Island, essentially following the south shore of the Savannah River. Tybee Island is the Wasaga Beach of the south. For everything classy about Hilton Head, Tybee Island levelled the landscape. Great thing was we were instructed to check out the north & south beaches for shore and sea birds and did with pleasing results. On the drive back we visited a National Historic Site, Ft. Pulaski, named for a a Polish hero of thr US Revolutionary...

Feb 27, 2012 - Day #9

Day 9, February 26/12, Sunday Weather dull and even cooler this a.m. 4 C, good day to be driving. Great trip down to Skidaway SP, with a stopover in Charleston. Skidaway Island is just south of Savannah and believe it or not has cable TV to every campsite so we watched the “Emmies” after supper. Site #56 is rather unique as a “gator hole” makes up the rear boundary. Going to remain here until Friday and tour out of this base. Brenda bought a copy of "The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo" and has been unapproachable since she opened the book.

May 22, 2011 - Bird Geek and Geekette

First, let me say we did do the Ghost Tour on Friday night. I totally forgot to write about it and three people emailed me asking about it---so you three people, will be excused from taking the test at the end of our journey because obviously you are paying attention to my blog, Stars go to Lee, Shelia, and Terry!!! The Ghost Tour was pretty hokey...basically another tour of "hysterical" Slovannah, but at night. Even Sam had to roll his eyes a few times at the jokes. Surprise, surprise...I found enough for a load of laundry and it appears...

May 21, 2011 - Beaufort SC

Decided we'd jump the river and go into SC to see yet another historical city-Beaufort, chartered in 1711...I think all the "hysterical" cities are beginning to run together for me! This area is known as the Lowcountry. We stopped at the Visitor's Center and got some information and decided to take a van tour, which we had to catch down the street. Had plenty of time to get lost while walking to find the office. There were some nice big rockers sitting on the porch and a little bit of a breeze as we waited for Bud, our tour guide. And once...

May 20, 2011 - Spin City

Nope, we didn't go to a spin bike class...but a laundromat. Here we were thinking we were all that and a bag of chips when it came to coin laundomats and we found out otherwise. After a leisurely breakfast (I cooked bacon & eggs outside) just like real camping except I used my electric grill, I decided I would try out a shower over at the comfort station (about 50 yards away). Sam has been using it and raving about all the hot water and pressure, but I was still using the one in 'Bama. Oh my---I'm a born again. I forgot what shower water...

May 19, 2011 - Historic Savannah

Decided to do a hop on hop off historic trolley tour of Savannah. They had a combo ticket with a ghost tour, which Sam wanted to try. We have that tour reserved for tomorrow night. It's only 12 miles from our campground-location, location, location, and beautiful scenery on top of that! After reading about Paula Deen's Restaurant, we had already decided we weren't going there--seats 300 and you have to be somewhere else at 9:30 am to pick up a preferred seating thing or something. Besides, is she really gonna be there and cook for you? Did...

May 18, 2011 - Skidaway Island State Park

After re-visiting the maps and doing a little gps'ing last night, we decided that the state park we were planning to go to today was too far away from Savannah for day trips, so after a little searching, we found one that is less than 30 minutes away from Savannah (good for day trips). Gave the Georgia Department of Natural Resources office a call this morning and they had sites!!! They have 30/50 amp sites and water and electric-$28/night!!! No sewer, but there is a free dump station. The 50 amp sites are on a first come, first served...

Apr 7, 2007 - The Legend of Bagger Vance

From Skidaway Island State Park, on the Atlantic Ocean skirts of Savannah, Georgia. I'll talk about today's trip & this park in another journal entry, perhaps tomorrow. At this moment, I feel inspired to write about the first hour after we arrived here. After taking only a few moments to do a partial set-up, due to the unseasonably cold temperatures here today & forecast for another day or two, I plugged the bus into the campground's cable TV terminal. This state park is very rare, in that we very seldom find cable TV at governmental...
