Jan 7, 2013 - Plains GA ... Hometown of President Jimmy Carter

Some more history on the life of President Jimmy Carter. We visited his hometown, Plains, GA. What a plain community ... no pun intended. This appears to be a typical small Georgian village with great community pride ... it is a very humble setting. Jimmy's childhood home is very humble ... no running water ... no electricity during Jimmy's childhood. His father ran a small "commissary" next to the house which helped supply goods to neighbors ... the family supported themselves by their garden, milk cows, butchering pigs and chickens and...

Jun 15, 2012 - Plains, GA

Plains GA, home of Jimmy Carter was born here and lives here today. The secret service still guards him for life. Hard to believe so you cann't get close to wear he lives now in town. This town lives on him because of the tourist it brings in. We had such a great campground here on the lake. So nice. Only 22.00 a night. Cann't beat that. The War Prison from the Rev. War is here and a museum that is great telling the story. Was a time to live in and the sad condition they had. Very interesting stop. The grave yard stone are number as they...

Apr 27, 2012 - Bypassing Alabama into Georgia

4/27/2012 Today we crossed the Mississippi border first thing this morning. We drove through Alabama with no great notations. We drove through Ft. Benning in Georgia onward to Plains where Jimmy Carter is from. Due to another time change, we didn't get to see anything today. We did drive by and see where he now lives and where he goes to church. Tomorrow we will go back and see his boyhood home and his museum as well as a couple of other things. We landed in a nice park with it's own pond, not much else here, but we do have the necessities!...

Nov 7, 2011 - Peanut Country

We found a little market on the side of the road and stopped for Hot Boiled Peanuts. They were so fresh that workers were picking the peanuts off the plants as we walked up. They were great. We wanted to get some to take with us, but they have to be kept refrigerated. We didn't have room for a big bag of green peanuts, so had to pass. I found out why the ones here are so much better than others. They are fresh, green peanuts. Once they are dried, they don't boil up as well. We also had fried peanuts -- delicious. They reminded me of the...

May 21, 2010 - " SEE JIMMY"

We were going to stay at the Georgia Veterns state park, it has a big lake and swimming area. We arrived before the weekend but we could not get a camp site in the park. So we drove back to Cordele, Georgia to stay at a K.O.A. We found the K.O.A. a very nice place to make our base camp and to rest after a hard day of GEOCACHING. The pool was nice and wet after the heat of the day and of course we had to have clean restrooms for Norma. That is the number one thing for Norma is CLEAN RESTROOMS, if not then we don,t stay. We have a restroom in...

Mar 5, 2010 - Plains, Georgia, Home of Jimmy Carter

Today we took a drive over to Plains some 20 miles or so southwest of Andersonville. Plains is the tiny rural community which is the home of the 39th President of the United States. Mr. and Mrs. Carter still have their home in Plains and much of the community is designated a National Historical Site. We began our tour of Plains at the local high school. Mr. Carter graduated from Plains High School in 1941. The National Park Service now occupies the building and has restored it to the way it looked when Jimmy was a student. One classroom has...

Scratchin' the Itch

Mar 25, 2009 - The journey is about to begin....

Well, today is Wednesday and Luana and I have 4 more days until we begin our journey northbound on the Appalachian Trail. I just wanted to send out our first journal entry to let all of you know exactly when we will be hitting the Trail (Sunday, March 29th). We have been extremely busy this entire week preparing to leave....my poor mother's living room looks like a tornado came through and scattered hiking gear everywhere. We have been buying last minute gear, food, batteries, and other things that we have thought we might need. The local...

Apr 5, 2008 - Plains and Andersonville

What do you do when your travel route is filled with severe thunderstorms? You sit tight in your present location (in our instance, Cordele, Georgia on I-75), arrange for another night in the campground and enjoy the day. We hit the road in our pickup and headed off to Plains, Georgia to see the home of President Jimmy Carter. We saw his boyhood home, his high school and his super secure gated presidential compound. We had lunch at a tiny restaurant in an old building on the block long business district in Plains. After lunch we took off...

Mar 11, 2008 - Plains

There are people that are presidential groupies who travel from presidential birthplace to presidential library across the country. We are not those people. But when we discovered that Plains, the home of Jimmy Carter, was within visiting distance, we were intrigued. As a president Carter gets low ratings, almost as low as our current president. Yet it is hard to imagine a finer man. The work he has done since his presidency has improved the lives to the helpless and hopeless all over the world. It's a mystery to us why such a bright,...

Nov 11, 2007 - Sunday School with President Carter

This morning I drove over to Plains to the Maranatha Baptist Church where President and Mrs. Carter attend when they are in town. He taught Sunday School this morning. The lesson was on the "ups and downs" of Joseph's life and how the lessons apply to us today. It was a good class. I stayed for morning worship, after which there were photo opportunities. President Carter said that, regarding the picture-taking, he used to say, "We'd be delighted." Now he says, "We are willing." Everybody got a kick out of that. When the Carters are there,...
