Dec 6, 2012 - On to Jekyll Island

12/6 move to Jekyll Is – Jim and Linda, tour hist district, dinner, Arch and Anne NS Today we moved down to Jekyll Island, GA. The Island is owned by the State. There is only one campground – on the north end of the Island. It is a nice place to drop anchor for a stay on a very popular island (particularly off-season). Upon arriving we met our friends Jim and Linda whom we met almost 3 years ago in the Keys. They are from Chicago and winter in the southeast. Jim graciously gave us a motor tour of the Island and a walking tour of the...

Aug 29, 2012 - Jekyll Island: Natural Beauty and Millionaire Row

On Wednesday, we rode over to Jekyll Island, which is one of four Georgia barrier islands that feature a paved causeway to access the island. The island is 7 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, has 8 miles of wide, flat beaches, and boasts 22 miles of hiking trails. The island has 5,700 acres but only 35% has been allowed to be developed so there are lots of unspoiled natural areas to explore. I really liked that. Most of the homes in the private parts of the island looked to Fred and me to be built in the 1960’s – lots of low, one story ranch...

Mar 23, 2012 - Jekyll Island, GA

From Crooked River State Park in St. Mary’s GA … Friday, March 23, 2012 Today after having breakfast outside in our screened tent, we drove north on I-95 until we reached the Jekyll Island exit. We spent all afternoon on the island and thoroughly enjoyed our first time visit. The history of Jekyll Island is so interesting. Several millionaires including J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and Cyrus McCormick purchased the entire island in the late 1800s and built a resort club and homes to be used as their winter getaway. This was before the...

On the Road Again

Mar 20, 2012 - Jekyll Island, Georgia

After being fought over by Spanish, French, English and Native Americans Jekyll Island, Georgia, was a thriving French cotton plantation until the Civil War, when a group of millionaires purchased it to create the Jekyll Island Club. It is still a 'gated community' with lovely homes, shopping and an RV campground. After driving over the causeway from the mainland there is an entrance fee at the gates. Jekyll Island is an important stopover on the migratory paths of many birds. The north end of the island is partly inland marsh being...

Mar 31, 2011 - Jekyll Island & St. Simon's Island

We were very optimistic this morning when we gathered for breakfast in the Grand Dining Room of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Although it was cloudy, it wasn't raining, and it actually looked as though there were some breaks in the clouds. After breakfast, we all made our way to the Jekyll Island Tram , and then we were treated to a tour of the entire property of the Jekyll Island Club . We made a stop at the Faith Chapel where we went inside and learned about the beautiful stained glass windows. Back on the tram, our next stop was at...

Mar 30, 2011 - Savannah, Paula Deen's, & Jekyll Island

Rain, rain, and more rain!!! It certainly has been a long time since we've seen this much rain. It was supposed to be better today, but instead it just rained more! We started out this morning on a city tour of Savannah (on the bus). Our group had reservations at Paula Deen's famous restaurant, The Lady & Sons. It is next to impossible to get in, but we had called and got reservations back in December, so our group broke off from the others about 10:30. Our bus driver took us to within 2 blocks of the restaurant, so we only had a little...

Southern Charm

Dec 15, 2010 - Jekyll Island

Today we revisited Jekyll Island another of the Golden Isle coast islands. When General James Oglethorpe established Georgia as a colony in 1733 he named the island in honour of his friend Sir Joseph Jekyll. He appointed william Horton to set up a military post in the srea to protect Fort Frederic on St Simon’s Island. By 1738 Horton had set up permanent residence on Jekyll Island, near what is now called DuBignon Creek. At his residence, Horton established a plantation prosperous enough to supply the population at Frederica with beef and...

Nov 6, 2010 - Jekyll Island - Georgia

We left St. Augustine and our time share condo by 9 AM. By 10:30 we were crossing the causeway and then the bridge to Jekyll Island, one of GA's southern barrier islands. Mom, you are so right: the live oaks are simply super gorgeous. It was only 38 degrees when we left FL and only got to 54 when we were at Jekyll Island, so Wilma kindly loaned me her windbreaker and I undid my capris so they almost went to my ankles. The island is very small and was first inhabited by Native Americans (mostly Creek we were told), then by an Englishman...

Jan 11, 2010 - Jekyll Island

OMG! We were heading down 95 and Dawn made the suggestion that we keep going and get to Jekyll Island. So for those of you who do not know, I used to go to Jekyll Island as a kid during Easter break. This place looks much the same as I remember it to be. This will be a boating destination in the future. Parking the RV the second time was a bit more tricky. It was dark when we got there and to say this was the opposite of a field would just about cover it. Overhanging trees and Spanish Moss baby ~ bring it on...

Dec 7, 2009 - Georgia

hi,and Happy Birthday to my brother Dave! We have been travelling through the state of Georgia, other cruisers and skipper Bob have warned us of shallow depths and shoaling all over this state,it is very true as it has 9ft tides, the tides twice daily working with the moon,we have had a full moon the same as you. The first day we entered Georgia was a hairy one as we were not sure of the tide yet(although we have a chartplotter, telling us of high and low tide)we came into the Savannah River and were not absolutely sure of what side to take...

We didn’t get a very early start this morning but we were only traveling about 120 miles so we were not in a hurry.. We passed by the turnoff to Hilton Head and then the exit to Savannah which was not easy. We love that area but this time our destination was Jekyll Island, Georgia… We have driven through the town of Brunswick several times before and saw the turn off to the Island but had never stopped there.. This time we did.. To get to the Island you have to drive across a six mile causeway to get to this incredible place… When you get...

Sep 29, 2009 - Jekyll Island, GA

We had a great time visiting Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island was first settled by the du Bignon in 1739 and five generations lived there until they sold the island in 1886. Jekyll Island was purchased by a group of millionaires who formed the famous Jekyll Island Club. The millionaires were the Rockefellers, Vails, Pulitzers, Goodyears, and others. Their ‘cottages’ were larger then most homes today.
