Day 17, Mar 5/12, 2012 Monday: No frost last night but it got darn cold! Got a good start this a.m. and headed for the Okefenokee Swamp and NWR. Weather perfect and we had a great day including a boat ride through parts of the swamp. Wonderful lunch at the Okefenokee Restaurant in Folkston, GA and then learned that the owner was one of our mates on the boat ride. Settled in early again tonight.

Mar 4, 2012 - Day #14

Day 14, March 2/12, Friday: Left Skidaway Island S.P. And drove south along the coastal highway #17, slower than I-95 but a lot more interesting. On the advice of a kind soul we met along the way we stopped at Harris Neck NWR. What a beautiful and intriguing place. Began as rice plantations, high ground was converted to a military airbase in 1938/40, active as a base until 1948 when it was turned over to the county, then the Fed Gov't., who in turn gave it to NWR to develop and manage. Old rice fields were flooded into large ponds and...

Mar 4, 2012 - Day #15

Day 15, Mar 3/12, Saturday: Spent part of the morning at the park bird blind and then took a long walk along a trail leading to the ocean. Returned to learn we were under a hurricane “watch” and if a hurricane was immanent we would know by the sirens at the sub base and we were instructed to go to the washrooms, large, low concrete block structures, and wait it out. Nothing yet but some winds and a few showers. It's been so dam dry down here, a real droubt, some of the locals would settle for a hurricane or two just to raise the water...

Sep 25, 2009 - Crooked River State Park St. Marys, GA

There is a lot of animal life in the park. The park does have a Gopher Tortoise sanctuary. We have seen deer, a gator, gopher tortoises, wild pigs, horned owls and cotton tail rabbits. While walking on one of the trails one morning Rascal and I saw a young deer. We were able to get within 12 feet of the friendly little deer and I was able to get some photos.

Apr 24, 2008 - No-see-'em's and Submarines

diversity Saint Mary's style!- Thursday, April 24 We followed the coastal route to Jacksonville, then picked up I-95 and crossed the Saint Mary’s River into Georgia. From the modern suspension bridge you can see the ocean, and Jacksonville is a busy seaport. Our destination was Crooked River State Park near the town of Saint Mary’s on the Georgia side of the river. We found it with no trouble, and immediately decided we like Georgia’s state parks too. After Florida it’s refreshing to be able to drive in without a reservation and have no...
