Jan 3, 2013 - Looking Forward

I really have to apologize. After the journal entry on Thanksgiving I had promised to be more prompt with the next update and certainly failed to do so. When we were traveling more in the motorhome I was quite diligent about reporting from each location; now that we are a little more stationary I don’t seem to keep up. So this is the start of a new journal for 2013 and I will try to do better. First, let me catch you all up on the continuing saga of Buzz’s eye. When I made the last entry he had been admitted to the eye institute in Miami...

Oct 19, 2012 - Brickyard Plantation Golf & RV Resort

We relaxed all morning, and then headed out to Americus, GA which is to be our 2012 winter home. We had come to this area during the summer to check out a workamping opportunity at one of the state parks which operates a steam train. The Georgia state parks run an expedition train on the weekends and we figured they could use Buzz’s expertise and I could help out on the trips. The state park is quite nice, but when we found the area where the workampers stayed we weren’t terribly impressed. Then we found out they wanted about 24 hours a...

Sep 7, 2012 - Visiting Our Winter 2012 Home

We have committed to our workamping site for the winter, and wanted to stop and spend a couple of nights getting to know the owners of the RV Park, find out what we would be doing, find out when they wanted us to start, and play the golf course. So we drove north from last night’s stop and arrived in the middle of the afternoon at Brickyard Plantation Golf & RV Resort in Americus, GA. They had sold the land the RV Park was situated on last year and were building a brand new park right on the golf course, hoping to be open by October 1st....

Mar 22, 2012 - Our best day trip--Closer to God

Thursday, March 29, 2012 Museum of Southeastern Indians, Roberta, GA As we travel and pick up brochures, visitor guides, state tourist publications we research each bit of information as carefully as possible as we attempt to discover those sites that contribute to the uniqueness of each state, region or county. Our discovery of a brief museum description was not impressive; however, it was intriguing to learn that a Southern Georgia collector had a private museum. We learned that the museum was available for viewing by appointment. Brenda...

Mar 8, 2012 - Driving to Kolomoki Mounds

Driving to Kolomoki, Blakely, GA Thursday, March 08, 2012 We had a rather long drive today; however, the drive was one that we enjoyed. We saw more Georgia countryside as we meandered along county and state roads heading to our first prehistoric site during our stay in Georgia. The beauty the drive offered was just what a day in early spring should hold. We saw thousands of acres being prepared for planting. Farmers were pulling harrows to break up the clods of red clay that had hardened through the winter rains and winds. There were others...

Mar 1, 2012 - Americus GA Brickyard Plantation RV Park

March 2012—Americus, Georgia When we drove in to the Brickyard Plantation Golf Course and RV Park, before we could fully park and hook up water, electricity and sewer, our friend, Priscilla, from Hickory Ridge RV Park in New York, drove up. She knew we were arriving in the afternoon on March 1; apparently, she had been watching for our RV. She was parked immediately across the pond from us and had a “bird’s eye view” of the spot we were assigned. We enjoyed her greeting. She brought two ice-cold beers, one for each of us. Brenda still does...

Mar 1, 2012 - Americus GA part two

We are taking in the spring weather that continues to welcome us to Americus. FINALLY!! I have waited 29 years for a southern spring. Our last southern spring was in Columbia, Mississippi just 90 miles north of New Orleans in 1983. We moved to Baltimore at the end of that summer—no regrets just hated to wait so long for springtime days in Maryland. We have seen so many plants as they greet the warmer and longer daylight hours. Dependent upon the geographic orientation we have been delighted to see dogwoods budding with a few in full bloom....

Jul 25, 2010 - Jimmy Carter National Historical Site and Andersonville Prison

We spent the day Sunday at the Jimmy Carter National Historical site and Andersonville prison. Andersonville, is also the US POW memorial to all POWs and an active military cemetery although it's hard to fathom why anyone would want to be buried there. When Jimmy Carter was running for president, his message sounded a lot like Obama's. I was much younger then and very frustrated with the establishment and I drank the cool-aid and voted for Carter who turned out to be a liberal when elected just like Obama. Although, it's hard for anyone to...

May 11, 2010 - to Georgia

Continuing my Civil War history lesson I went to Andersonville,Georgia, the site of a Confederate prisoner of war camp. This camp was constructed late in the war for an occupancy of about 6,000, but during the 14 months it was open, the population grew to more than 30,000 at one point. More than 45,000 Union soldiers came through the camp, but due to overcrowding, shortage of food, lack of water, and unsanitary living conditions over 13,000 died. When the camp was in operation, prisoners died so often there weren't enough people to keep up...

Mar 20, 2009 - Americus, GA - Brickyard Plantation Golf & RV

We spent six days in Americus. The weather was perfect - spring-like, highs in low 70s, sunny and low humidity. The dogwoods, red buds, azaleas and rhodes were blooming and everything was covered in a bright green dusting of pollen. Jim washed both the coach and car while here, but they were quickly recovered in a green haze! While here we visited several places: Habitat for Humanity's Global Village in Americus. Very interesting to view the different types of housing provided in various places throughout the world. This was another...

Dec 15, 2008 - Americus, GA.

We drove to Americus, GA. from King's Bay NSB today. About a 4 hr drive. Went through Claxton, GA. That's home to those Claxton Fruitcakes that you see all across America, esp at Christmas. Yes, we bought some. Americus (the RV park we picked out) is about 10 miles from Andersonville, GA. That's the location of the former CSA POW camp & now the National Prisoner of War Museum. 10 miles the other way from the RV park was Plains, GA., homeof Jimmy Carter. His old high school is a museum now and the town is just the way it was in 1950. Not...
