Dec 31, 2020 - Jekyll Island
Our last day in Georgia and we've been told we should ride out to Jekyll Island. We had looked at it the other day and decided we weren't going to pay $8 as a parking fee before getting on the island. As it turns out, Jekyll Island is actually a state park and this is the daily entry fee. So we headed out this endless causeway and found this beautiful beachfront town. We drove through and did some walking around the "Historic Area" and then took a ride through the center of town and along the beaches, looping around the North end of the...

Dec 29, 2020 - St. Mary's, GA
Today we took a drive down to St. Mary's, GA. It's about 25 miles from here. St. Mary's is an old factory town, but today the paper mills are pretty much gone. It's claim to fame is the large King's Bay Naval Base. This is the home of the Navy's Atlantic missile submarine fleet. Several years ago we had some friends who were stationed here and we got a grand tour of the base and the USS Ohio. Of course, they weren't going to let us in the base these days, so we just rode down to the town waterfront. The St. Mary's River is the border...

Dec 28, 2020 - Brunswick, GA
Yesterday we took the arduous journey from Savannah all the way down to The Coastal Georgia RV Resort in Brunswick, GA. We didn't hurry and made a couple stops and completed the 68 miles trip in about 2 hours. The weather has been good and the traffic relatively light. There are a lot of RV's on the road but I don't know that it's as many as in years past. The campgrounds have been crowded, but not full. Today we took a ride out to St. Simon's Island and the Fort Frederica National Monument. This was a British fortification on the Mackay...

Dec 25, 2020 - Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! Here we are, not even a week out and I'm behind already. Let's see if I can catch up. We left New Bern on Monday stopped in Little River, SC, just outside of Myrtle Beach. From there we continued on down US 17 to Charleston. Wednesday we pulled into Creekfire RV Resort, a new, supposedly high end campground, outside of Savannah, GA. The weather has been good and the traffic has been pretty light. Last night we had that line of storms come through. The winds are still pretty strong, but the temperature drop of over 40...

Dec 8, 2020 - Greensboro, GA
The trip to Greensboro GA was long but the weather was sunny and warming up. 50 degrees on arrival felt refreshing, although it is still supposed to be cold overnight. This is a resort-type RV campground. It is a KOA, so it is still just an RV campground, but it is one of he few 'destination' type KOA's that I have seen. We are on the shore of Lake Oconee with boating and fishing. There are seasonal campers here, another rarity for KOA's. Nearby there is Del Webb Oconee with about 1,500 homes, just like Del Webb Sweetgrass! We will have a...

Nov 10, 2020 - culture shock
Last December we made the same trip we did today from north of Atlanta to an hour north of the Florida border. Last year it took us from 8:30 - 6pm; today we were here by lunch time. We didn't need any of the extra time we had budgeted, because we sailed through the metro area as quickly as we did on an Easter Sunday morning a few years ago. Many expressways converge in Atlanta and there is a beltway around it. Car traffic was light, but there were so many trucks. Once we got to the beltway nearly all of them disappeared taking the route...

Nov 9, 2020 - below the Mason-Dixon line
We've driven to Florida from home many times, but we've never made a tourist stop on the way in southern Illinois. This meant that our usual campground stops aren't well spaced this time. We always stay north of Atlanta so we can crawl past this inevitable barrier during non-rush hour times. Nashville can be a major clog as well, but they seem to have finally finished their road construction and we zoomed right through. The winding route through the mountains north of Chattanooga can be harrowing in below freezing temperatures, but today...

Nov 3, 2020 - Tallulah gorge sp
We decided to take off and head to north ga and wnc to see leaves. We stopped at Tallulah gorge state park and camped for the night. We walked to the overlook to see the suspension bridge over the roaring river. Very beautiful for the east coast! Heading on to NC tomorrow.

Oct 30, 2020 - a boardwalk and a street walk
Well, hallelujah! It was a breeze to get parked, level, and hooked up! I relaxed on Wednesday night and stayed put (except for grocery shopping) on Thursday because it rained most of the time. But today was for discovering Valdosta! I was given a tour magazine that recommended bbq restaurants and also mentioned a wildlife management area and some historic buildings. So, off I went to see as much as possible and eat southern style until I had my fill! About 10 miles east of town is the Grand Bay WMA with a boardwalk trail. It was informative...

Oct 25, 2020 - Adventure at Stone Mountain!
I drove for over 3 hours this morning in mist and clouds again! After I got set up in my site for the next few days (all tires touching a surface!), I went to the area of the park with all the attractions. I know it's mostly for kids, but I thought I would enjoy seeing the pumpkin festival and the things that glow in the dark. The parking lot was mostly empty when I got there but the line was long for some reason. I soon found out that they had lost power when a tree fell on the train tracks and took out a power line. People were starting...

Oct 15, 2020 - Trenton, Georgia
I was doing some tank dumping when I snapped the water inlet connection! It turns out it is all plastic, and I think it is a case where the plastic just got old and brittle. I found a replacement at Camping World, but I needed an adapter to make it work. After it was all connected, which seemed to go well, it dripped very slowly. Nothing I do would make it stop. So I will connect the water for suppertime chores, fill the coffee maker and a few jugs with water, and shut it down for the night. Same thing in the morning for breakfast and showers.

Oct 13, 2020 - Our home in Georgia - (3/18 - 6/15/20)
We had a 9-1/2 hour drive today, but we made it all the way back home. We got in about 7:30 pm. We found everything in great order thanks to my BFF, Benita! She had stocked our fridge and made sure we had plenty of hand soap and toilet paper!! She's the absolute best!! I went into town the next day to stock up some things we needed so I wouldn't have to get out much. We have a lot of projects that can be done while here. We have a bluebird box in the backyard and I noticed that there was a lot of activity around it. Yes, we have bluebird...
