Mar 25, 2014 - Zolfo Springs Pioneer Park

On the way home from Solomon's Castle we stopped at the Pioneer Park in Zolfo Springs, we saw some very old buildings, the Peace River with it's Alligator, some vultures and a snapping turtle. It needs to be said that hundreds of vultures call this area home, it doesn't have anything to do with the "snowbirds (RV travelers from the north) and fulltimers like us, who frequent the RV park near their nesting area.

Mar 25, 2014 - Solomon's Castle

Solomon's Castle, about 7 miles south of Ona, FL, grew out of the imagination of an eccentric artist. The internationally known artist and sculptor, Howard Solomon. Howard Solomon is soft-spoken man -- a sculptor with muscular arms and an unfinished high school education. "I hated school. My teachers told my parents I was borderline retarded." One day when he was 17 and his folks were at work, he ripped the back wall off their new suburban home and began adding on porch. "I found that I really enjoyed building things on a grand scale." Now...

Dec. 18 through Jan. 1, 2014 Dec 18 - Drove one hundred and five miles south and arrived at the Thousand Trails Peace River Preserve, in Wauchula, FL. for two weeks. As you can see on the map, the town is located in about the middle of the state, east to west, but that did not save it from the ravages of hurricane Charlie. The hurricane hit Wauchula at 5:30 pm on Friday, August 13, 2004, causing more than $750 million in damage. Sustained winds of 140 mph, with gusts of over 160 mph, were clocked in downtown Wauchula. The entire area had...

Dec 13, 2013 - Wauchula, FL

Fri, 13 Dec: Back on the move again... Let's see if we remember how to do this stuff. After seven weeks, six of which were aboard a cruise ship, one's skills can get pretty rusty. Sufficient quantities of Bourbon may help the process (or at least reduce the frustration). As mentioned, we spent six weeks aboard the ms Maasdam round trip Fort Lauderdale to Western Africa and the Med. We had a most enjoyable time but we are also very happy to again be home. We disembarked a week ago today (06 Dec) and spent the week at Hobe Sound in John...

2013 Travels

Dec 9, 2013 - Wauchula, Florida

12/8 – 12/31 A short drive of 84 miles brought us to The SKP Resort in Wauchula, Florida (SR580, US98, US17). The last time we were at this campground was in 2011. We spent some time getting ready for our big trip but did find a few spare minutes. During the month: >Bob and Sandy Swanson showed up at the park from their cruise to Europe. We enjoyed looking at their photos and sharing a couple meals. We met Bob and Sandy on a cruise to South America in 2008. >Had a dinner with Tom McIlwain and Gordon and Laura Bornkamp at our place. Laura...

Oct 17, 2013 - Wauchula, FL

Thu, 17 Oct: We're here... for now! A road day, and happily, a short road day. Today's total was a mere 144 miles with an average of 8.2 mpg. Both of us drove short (70 mile) segments, and we both had our share of aggravation. Most important, we didn't lose or damage anything today. The way things have been going of late, that's a big plus! Since our site in Daytona Beach was a pull thru we didn't have to disconnect Dinkum last evening, which meant we didn't have to connect him today. That's another big plus! Checklists complete we started...

2013 Travels

Apr 8, 2013 - Back in Wachula, FL

We are back in Wauchula for two weeks and the park is three quarters empty. The snowbirds are heading north. Especially the Canadians who have to be back within six months or they lose their socialist health insurance. Today, March 28th has us driving to Polk City to spend the day with Pete and Jane. They are two fine people from our area in New York. They are going to be flying back in the beginning of April, so we wanted to get together before they left and go to the Fantasy of Flight, which is just around the corner from them. Since Pete...

Mar 18, 2013 - Wauchula, FL

Ralph and I went back to Wauchula for 4 days. Found Jean Pryor again and the three of us went out to dinner on St. Patrick’s Day. What did we have you ask, corn beef and cabbage of course. Jean told us a lot of great stories of her and her families RV traveling from years ago. Her family was very adventurous and we got a lot of laughs out of her tales. She is a lot of fun and hope to see her in the near future somewhere down the road. Ralph put an Audubon Bird app on his smart phone and started a “Life List” of the various birds we have...

Mar 13, 2013 - TTN Peace River, Wauchula, FL (again)

Wow, it's like Dejevu' all over again... Ok, you noticed we have bounced back and forth a little this month and there will be more of that thru this month. That is an effort to save money. Since we don’t pay anything more than our annual maintenance fee it’s inexpensive to stay at our Thousand Trails Preserves. Knowing that we’ll be hit with higher camping fees while in the northeast states, we’re saving now for that eventuality. Most of the “snowbirds” are gone, or going, from these southern parks we’re able to get right into a FHU site...

Feb 27, 2013 - still having fun at summer camp

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 I did do something different and interesting last week tho. I went to a “Florida Flywheelers” show. B didn’t want to go. The name might tell you a little bit about what goes on there. A flywheel is part of an engine (for the non-mechanical folks) and big old engines, especially steam engines, had huge flywheels. So a buncha guys formed this club and bought some land and started putting buildings up and collecting junk, especially junk that had huge flywheels or Whoa Nellie, end of the month is sneakin up. Wow...

Feb 18, 2013 - Life is still grand

Monday, February 18, 2013 HAPPY PRESIDENTS DAY to all you X-pres’. Whether you were the president of Argentina, your local book club or the PTA, I think this day was really meant for you. Washington and Lincoln may have their faces plastered all over this day but I firmly believe youse other X-pres’ really deserve the day off more than they do, don’t you? So in keeping with that vein, since I was president of my 11th grade class back in good ole Clover Valley High School, I am giving myself the day off. With pay I might add. The ironic part...

Feb 10, 2013 - Still playing around

Sunday, February 10, 2013 Oh what fun we’re having. We are just glad we stopped here and have met all these nice folks. Last Monday we went out splashing in a river with the alligators. It was just another beautiful day in paradise and nobody got et up. Rick and Sue have an inflatable kayak that they take down rivers while Cathy & Ed and B & I rented canoes. We went down the Peace River which runs near the park but we started out a number of miles downstream. The river meandered slowly and twisted and turned. We saw our first gator not long...
