Mar 29, 2016 - Wauchula, FL

3/16/16 thru 3/29/16 Wauchula, FL Thousand Trails Peace River resort in Wauchula, FL has become a regular stop for us while in Florida. We’re particularly drawn to this resort because two of our friends, Jean Pryor & Sandy Story (the girls) winter here. Our timing was not the best because the girls were in Georgia for a few rallies, but we did get to spend some time with them before we left; including a lunch on Ralph’s birthday. Wauchula is about sixty miles east of Sarasota so we focused on that area for a visit. We visited Fisherman’s...

Feb 27, 2016 - Wauchula, FL

Sat, 27 Feb: Almost there... Today is scheuled to be a short day. Our original goal was to drive 100 miles or so to Bartow and overnite at the Wal*Mart. We picked Bartow as it was a perfect lunch rendezvous with Orrin and June. These two folks were tablemates on our 2009 world cruise and are regular winter visitors in New Port Richie. They were heading back home and we determined that our routes would cross in Bartow. Perfect. We departed Wildwood about 0920 & returned to I 75 via FL 44. I 75 south twenty or so mines to US 98. It was a...

Jan 12, 2016 - Peace River RV in Wauchula, FL

12/23/2015 thru 1/12/16 Wauchula, FL Our Wauchula, FL visit has us back at the Peace River Thousand Trails Resort. This park has about 400 sites, (200) 30 amp & water and (200) 50 amp water & sewer sites. The 30 amp sites are in the lower part of the park and are subject to flooding, both from the river and heavy rain. Since these are grass sites with a dirt base as opposed to the 50 amp sites that are grass with a sand & gravel base, the 30 amp sites are usually avoided. When we arrived there were only a couple of 50 amp sites available...

Jan 6, 2016 - Leaving Wauchula

After arriving at the SKP park in Wauchula and planning to stay for four months through the winter, we get the call from Jojoba Hills RV resort near Temecula CA. We got on the list last summer thinking that we probably would not get to the top of the list until next summer. We were in Wachula for 10 days when we got the call that we were being offered membership and a site. Well we jumped on it of course. I am not happy being back in the socialist state of California but it is only an hour away from our granddaughter, Audrey. So we packed...

Dec 20, 2015 - Change of plans

Just 10 days after arriving in Wauchula, we get the call from Jojoba Hills RV Resort in Aguanga, CA near Temecula. Our name has come up on the membership waiting list. That was quick! So now we have a RV site in a very nice resort for as long as we want to stay. This will be our winter home while we are on the west coast. Im not thrilled with being in the state of California but we will be about an hour away from our granddaughter, Audrey, and our son and daughter-in-law. Its a good trade-off. The place is beautiful, too. So we will pack up...

Dec 2, 2015 - Our winter home

Finally...after a wonderful 8500 mile trip over 8 months, we have completed the full circle and arrived at our winter home in Wauchula, Florida. Check our the map showing our path. We will be camped here for the next four months in an Escapees co-op park. Nice, clean, well maintained with friendly people. We are comfortable in this area since we have spent the last two winters in Sebring, which is a few miles down the road. We both have a list of chores to complete while staying here, including cleaning and maintenace. Gotta prepare for...

Mar 24, 2015 - Florida Feb 16 thru 3/24, 2015

February 16 thru March 2. 2015 On February 16th we were back at the Thousand Trails Peace River Preserve in Wauchula, FL for two weeks. No surprise that this time of year is the peak season for the Florida parks and Thousand Trails institutes their “High Use Restrictions”. This limits us to two week instead of three week stays as well as limiting us to two reservations at a time on the books. Peace River has a unique lottery system to get a site with 50 amps and a sewer connection. One section of this park is subject to occasional flooding...

Jan 5, 2015 - Wauchula, FL Jan 2015

December 22 through January 5, 2015 The Thousand Trails Peace River Preserve in Wauchula, FL is one of our most comfortable resorts we frequent. The sites are extra-large with good utilities and most of the interior roads are paved. Walmart, grocery stores and other essential retail facilities are within an easy drive. We enjoy the nice nature trail along the Peace River and there’s river fishing opportunities as well as an occasional alligator sighting. Unfortunately, the restaurants we prefer and RV service facilities are a long distance...

5/1 – 5/20 We continued our stay in the SKP Resort in Wauchula, Florida. During the stay: >we finally unpacked all our stuff and got everything cleaned and put away. Besides the souvenirs we purchased for our family we now have a couple displayed in our house. We took pictures and you can check the stuff out on our website. >while we were away on our trip a solenoid failed in the house...

4/26 – 4/30 Two more days and 1245 miles brought us back to where we started, Fort Lauderdale. The last day was spent packing all the “treasurers” we accumulated in four months, it was an adventure. On April 28 we docked and we were off the ship by about 10:00am (Ken had to be dragged off). After waiting an hour the Hertz bus showed up and drove us to the rental car place. Another hour and we were on the road. By 4:00pm we were at our house. The house look great but there were a few problems. The batteries that start the engine were dead,...

Mar 25, 2014 - Zolfo Springs Pioneer Park

On the way home from Solomon's Castle we stopped at the Pioneer Park in Zolfo Springs, we saw some very old buildings, the Peace River with it's Alligator, some vultures and a snapping turtle. It needs to be said that hundreds of vultures call this area home, it doesn't have anything to do with the "snowbirds (RV travelers from the north) and fulltimers like us, who frequent the RV park near their nesting area.

Mar 25, 2014 - Solomon's Castle

Solomon's Castle, about 7 miles south of Ona, FL, grew out of the imagination of an eccentric artist. The internationally known artist and sculptor, Howard Solomon. Howard Solomon is soft-spoken man -- a sculptor with muscular arms and an unfinished high school education. "I hated school. My teachers told my parents I was borderline retarded." One day when he was 17 and his folks were at work, he ripped the back wall off their new suburban home and began adding on porch. "I found that I really enjoyed building things on a grand scale." Now...
