Feb 2, 2018 - End of January update

1-15 thru 1-25 2018 @ Fort DeSoto campground, just south of Saint Petersburg. Fort DeSoto park campground another great adventure to share with our followers. We will start off by saying we made it here..... for those of you who know Tom you’ll understand when you see our photos of the Skyway bridge and he was driving. When we both saw the bridge we both said Hail Mary let the angles fly with us. As it turned out during our stay we actually crossed the bridge back and forth 5 times. Only once with the motorhome. On one trip there was a fog...

May 8, 2017 - First day at Fort DeSoto County Park

The morning was filled with a bike ride to the dog beach (a couple of people drove the dogs there) where it was fun to see dogs of all sizes and breeds frolic and have fun in the water and on the beach. Then we rode our bikes to the west end of the island to see the fort. It was built for the Spanish-American War to protect the city of Tampa. The rapid fire cannons were bought from the British because we hadn't made them yet but they were not fired except for practice! Many buildings were built around the fort in the first years of the 20th...

Nov 11, 2014 - Goodbye Brandon, Hello Ft. DeSoto!

After a short 60 mile drive we arrived back at Fort Desoto. We are now Camp Hosts once again for the next 2 1/2 months, and it will be difficult to adjust to having some 'responsibility', and limited 'free time'. For us, anything less than 24/7 is limited 'free time'. :-) We have a great spot, but at 37 feet we can't back into the site unless we drive against traffic on the 'one-way' dirt road. The 'cut' is 90 degrees and there are trees that prevent the truck from making the needed arc when backing.....so if we reverse our direction, we...

Apr 29, 2014 - East Beach Once Again

East Beach is by far the least traveled beach in Tierra Verde. Time and time again we have walked this beach, and we never see more than a handful of people. To the right is the outer portion of Tampa Bay, just beyond the Skyway Bridge, as the water moves out and becomes the Gulf of Mexico. Here we can see the cargo ships enter and leave Tampa Bay, and other than the sound of an occasional Laughing Gull, there is always a sound just barely above 'Silent'. This is a peaceful beach, with the slight scent of salt water, and the added fragrance...

Jan 22, 2014 - Bushnell to Tierra Verde

We drove from Bushnell to Tierra Verde and covered a short distance of 108 miles. We arrived at Fort Desoto at about 10 a.m., checked in, and then had major help backing Serenity into a very angled, and very tight spot. Thanks to John and Mary for their kind welcome! We started to set up camp, but we decided to sit on the waters edge and enjoy our new home. We will be here for the next 5 months! We have a perfect location to watch a daily sunrise, and we can walk just 300 feet, or so, to watch the sunsets. Here are a few pictures to start...

Feb 14, 2010 - Quiet Valentines Day

From Fort Desoto Park in Tierra Verde, FL … We enjoyed a very nice quiet Valentine’s Day together. The winds were calmed down this morning, so we took advantage by taking a nice long walk after breakfast. We walked along the water once again enjoying all the beautiful birds in the area. I think it will be hard to encounter all the birds somewhere else that we have seen here. We will miss the water views too, but tomorrow we must move on. Our day was pretty laid back. I got caught up on tracking our bills and spending. We watched the...

Feb 13, 2010 - Socializin' in Sarasota

From Fort Desoto Park in Tierra Verde, FL … Charlie and I had a busy day. After a quick breakfast, we left around 10:15 this morning. We drove into downtown St. Petersburg to the Harbor Walk outdoor mall to see the 11:00 showing of Up In the Air with George Clooney. We really enjoyed the movie as well as the movie theatre. The seats were large leather seats, some of the nicest we have seen. It made for a very enjoyable movie experience. (Do I sound like a commercial?) After the movie, we did a little bit of shopping. Correction – I did a...

Feb 12, 2010 - Madeira Beach, FL

From Fort Desoto Park in Tierra Verde, FL … On Thursday morning we were all up around 8:00am. Charlie and I slept very well on the sofa bed. Our weather continued to be quite chilly today with highs only in the mid 50s. But we made the most of it. We walked around the campground along the beach and once again enjoyed watching the various types of shorebirds. For breakfast Charlie made sausage gravy, and Dad made whole wheat biscuits from scratch. It’s so nice to have men around who enjoy cooking. If Charlie or Dad didn’t cook this week,...

Feb 10, 2010 - Houseguests & Lots of Laughs

From Fort Desoto Park in Tierra Verde, FL … The last couple days have been busy ones for us. And with the extra houseguests with us, I have had to share my laptop. : ) Which is fine, of course. Yesterday started out to be a beautiful day until around noon when the rains came. Charlie and I took our bikes out after breakfast to try out the miles of bike trails in the park. The trails were awesome, all paved and really wide. We biked around six miles out to the beautiful beach and back to our campsite. We knew that the weather was going to...

Feb 8, 2010 - Sunny in St. Pete

From Fort Desoto Park in Tierra Verde, FL … Today started out as another cool day with temps in the 50s. But fortunately the sun was shining brightly, and the winds were calm. We walked about a mile and a half around the campground trying to familiarize ourselves with our new surroundings. After breakfast, Charlie set up our loungers on the beach just behind our campsite. What a gorgeous view of the beautiful blue water. We also enjoyed watching many shorebirds out there today. Even though it only warmed up to the low 60s today, it was...

Feb 7, 2010 - Fort Desoto Park in Tierra Verde, FL

From Fort Desoto Park in Tierra Verde, FL … Today was a travel day, so we set our alarm for 7:15am. Not that we really needed to since we usually sleep pretty light on the day we are scheduled to move. Charlie jumped out of bed, turned on the furnace and immediately starting coffee and breakfast. By the time I was up and dressed, breakfast was on the table. Thanks, honey! The air was noticeably cooler today but at least it wasn’t raining like it was when we last moved two weeks ago. We got everything packed up and the slides in and were...

Jan 29, 2008 - Day Two At Fort DeSoto Campground

Good Evening Friends & Family, Today we had company, Michelle and George Emond from New Port Richey Florida formally from Amesbury, and Holy Family Parish. We had a great day with them. It was in the 70's today with the sun warm & bright. After lunch we took a ride over to North Beach, this is a beautiful beach with a barrier reef, and an abundance of shells. From there we went over to Fort DeSoto the namesake of this park and campground. Fort DeSoto was built to defend Tampa Bay during the Spanish American War. Later we came back to camp,...
