Feb 27, 2013 - Florida is a long State!

Today was kind of boring as we travelled I95 most of the time. The only advantage of traveling on the interstate is that we can set the cruise control at 55mph and get pretty good (for a motorhome) gas mileage (~9.5mpg). We decided to leave I95 at Port St. Lucie and head toward Lake Okeechobee. As soon as we headed west the skies opened up and it rained all the way to South Bay. We're spending the night at South Bay RV Campground. I stayed here a couple of years ago. It's areally nice campground owned by Palm Beach County. We should be in...

Feb 10, 2013 - South Bay, FL

From South Bay RV Park, South Bay, FL ... Sunday, February 10, 2013 On Saturday we left WP Franklin Park and drove east on S.R. 80 to South Bay, FL. This is our first stay at this Palm Beach Co. park. When you make reservations here, you cannot reserve a specific campsite. However, you can tell them which section you want to be in, and they are supposed to hold one of those sites for you. However, when we arrived, they assigned us to a different area. And although most of the campsites here are really nice, this is the worst area as it...

On the Road Again

Jan 16, 2013 - January 15th South Bay Florida

80 degrees again today. Took Carolyn to the airport. She got off ok. She called when she got home. Julie picked her up at the airport and took her to get groceries. Checked the tires today, all seemed good. Caught 5 bass at the dock to day in the evening.

80 degrees to day. Carolyn wanted to go to Golden Coral, but that was 50 miles away so she settled for a Chinese buffet. We removed the valve stem extension the other day and had AAA pump it up today. Now I can't get the pressure gauge on the valve stems to measure pressure and am left to hitting them with a small club or just pushing the valve to listen for air. Not good, but we hope that the problem is fixed. Caught 7 bass at dock largest about 15 inches.

Jan 16, 2013 - January 13th Sunday

Another nice warm day in South Florida. This one was quite sunny. We went to a marina in a town called Pahokee (not sure of the spelling). Very many people were fishing . for crappie off the dock. They are not limited on the number of poles they can have here. One older lady had about 25 poles she was fishing with. I don't see how she could watch that many. It is fascinating to see them burning the fields. They seem to burn the fields after harvest. Sally and I rode the bikes 12 miles along the levee bank paved bike trail today.

Florida, 2013

Jan 12, 2013 - January 12th

Today Terry went fishing first thing in the morning catching 6 bass and 1 brim.Sally and I later took a 10 mile bike ride, a couple of miles down the Okeechobee trail that goes all the way around the lake. We were unable to to stay on the trail as it was fenced off at that point. So, we got on a little traveled paved road alongside a canal. We followed it for 3 miles seeing 3 alligators along the way. It was pretty windy making the ride harder that it should been. We took a ride to Cleweston Florida in the car after lunch. Cleweston is the...

Florida, 2013

Jan 11, 2013 - January 11th

Another good day in southern Florida. It reached a high today of a little over 80. Mostly cloudy today with a several light showers. We took a car trip up to the Northern end of Lake Okeechobee to visit Sally's Uncle Don and his friend Anna. We got a tour of the city of Okeechobee. We saw where Don used to live several years ago/ The golf course and many other points of interest. About mid afternoon we left heading for Walmart. On the way we spied a Golden Coral and decided to stop. That was a big mistake for my weight control. My nickname...

Florida, 2013

Jan 10, 2013 - January 10th

We got up this morning and prepared to leave. Stored everything disconnected everything then before we left we checked the air pressure in the two tires that had been leaking from the valve stems. the first one was fine the second one was down to 20 lbs and should be 90 lbs. Now what do we do? The fellow camped across from us had a diesel motorhome and they have an air compressor on board. He volunteered to blow the tire up for us. As we were doing so we discovered a leak in the valve extension that we had just paid $100 to have installed a...

Dec 19, 2012 - Lake Okeechobee - again

Wednesday 12/19 We left New Smyrna this morning and drove to Titusville. We didn’t have time to see the Astronaut Hall of Fame on Monday so we were going to do it today. NOT – they don’t open until noon?? So, it was down the road to our new location – South Bay RV Park in South Bay at the southern tip of Lake Okeechobee – a little over 200 miles today. It was sunny and got up to the mid-80s. At 730 square miles, the natural Lake is the largest in Florida and 7th largest in the US (2nd largest totally within the lower 48). It is the...

Feb 16, 2011 - Flyers in Florida

Winnie and I moved further east to South Bay, FL. We stayed in a Palm Beach County RV park which was cheap and nice. It had paved sites and full hook-ups including cable. The only thing that detracted from the site was the black snow. South Bay is in the middle of sugar cane country. It seems after they harvest the cane, they burn the remaining stubble left on the field. I’m not sure why, but my guess is that it kills any diseases or pests and also returns the nutrients looked up in the stubble to the soil. As you look around there are...

Mar 22, 2010 - Always an Adventure

Yesterday was moving day. We had only planned to stay at South Bay Campground for two weeks, but extended three days until we could get into Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound. South Bay was a very comfortable campground operated by Palm Beach County. Clean, safe and quiet with large paved sites, plenty of grass, a small lake and some nice trees. It was right next to Lake Okeechobee, but you couldn't see the lake at all. Lake Okeechobee is the second largest fresh water lake wholly within the continental United States (behind Lake...

Feb 9, 2009 - I dont feel well.

Must just say a few words about the effects of having no public health service here. Generally at home, its in nobody’s interest to be sick. Apart from a few days off work nobody has anything to gain – doctors surgeries become crowded – hospital waiting lists grow– who wins? Of course those that need it end up with the treatment they require – for free. The system is not perfect but speaking from experience I am very greatful for our public health service. Now just consider the situation this side of the pond. No free healthcare – being ill...
