Mar 18, 2012 - Our Week at Silver River

From Silver River State Park in Ocala, FL … Sunday, March 18, 2012 Well it’s our last day here at Silver River State Park. I can’t believe we’ve been here 10 days already. We have really enjoyed our stay here. After being rainy and cloudy the first couple of days, all the days since have been gorgeous and warm. We have enjoyed many hikes on the trails, bike rides through the park and on the trails, and morning campfires. There are plenty of good restaurants here in the Ocala area that our waistlines can attest to. : ) (Can you say “Weight...

On the Road Again

Mar 12, 2011 - Biking, Hiking, & Stargazing

From Silver River State Park in Ocala, FL … Saturday, March 12, 2011 Well, the temperatures dipped down even colder last night than the night before. We woke up to 39 degrees this morning! While Mom and Dad got ready and packed their things into the car, I fixed a light breakfast for everyone. Once they had eaten, we walked out to see them off. It was really sad to see them go. On the Road Again

Mar 11, 2011 - Mom's Birthday Celebration

From Silver River State Park in Ocala, FL … Friday, March 11, 2011 The four of us were up around 7:30 this morning. It got quite cold overnight and was only 49 when we got up to start our day. After we had some coffee, I went out with Mom and Dad for a walk. We walked around the campground and through the loop where the cabins are located. The cabins in this state park are REALLY nice. Large two bedroom cabins with a screened porch that wraps around the front and one side. Charlie and I were able to see inside one last year, and we were...

On the Road Again

Jan 10, 2011 - Silver State Park

This is one of our favorite parks. Coal is a neat town, the park is easy to get in to. Good municipal golf course. The trip begins. Our first park is one we  have been to before.  We have a nice pull trough site (very important!).  It's a bit chilly.  I have looked forward to getting away.  The holidays were stressful.  The construction due to the water leak was terrible. But we made it and we're on the road again. So why is there this sense of unease?   Mild depression?  Disjointed? I now realize that this happens at the beginning and end...

Finding Warmth!

Jan 12, 2010 - GOT CRACKER?

When we arrived at Silver River State Park near Ocala, Florida, we discovered that the park contains an historic area called Cracker Village. I have always thought that “cracker” was a derogatory term, somewhat like an “N-word” for white people. I was intrigued. What is a “Cracker Village?” Is it the people who lived there? The architecture? Or maybe the lifestyle? The Cracker Village tour was schedule for 3pm Saturday. On arrival, we discovered that the old guy (volunteer) who was to conduct the tour felt it was too cold and cancelled....
