May 17, 2008 - Sebring
Last night and tonight we're at Highlands Hammock State Park. It's the oldest state park in Florida and was developed by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in 1930. It has a loop drive that I rode my bike down early in the morning and it felt like being in the middle of the jungle. All I heard were the birds and things moving in the plants. They do have mountain lions (called panthers here), bobcats, an occasional bear, many alligators, snakes, birds, other small animals, and many bugs. There are 5 different systems here - cypress swamp,...

Feb 12, 2008 - Young @ Heart, Other Parts Are Old
From Torrey Oaks RV Resort, in Bowling Green, FL, 50 miles east of St. Petersburg. The weather has been so enjoyable down here the last several days, as we continue to hear about the cold temps & snow in much of the rest of the nation. It indeed has been very nice, requiring nothing more than shorts & tees day or night. We are supposed to have a cool front arriving later today with rains, lower temps & potentially some storms. The air already has a “hint of moisture” feeling in the air, for which I slipped-on a nylon wind breaker earlier...

Jan 18, 2008 - Higland Oaks Hammock State Park, Sebring, FL
We both thought this was a great park, please use caution however when reserving your site, as some can be very tricky to get into. Restrooms and showers were very nice and clean and all the folks we meet were great. We arrived Friday and went for the fish fry at the restaurant located in the park within walking distance of the campground, very well. Lots of great hikes and cycling, also a small museum about the Civilian Conservation Corps. Make sure you have ample hose and power cords for your RV, I had to head to Wal-Mart to pick up...

Nov 12, 2007 - Highland Hammock State Park
I got six days off from work at the hospital , so I shall try going to a few state parks in my area. Most of the state parks I have never been there before or over thirty years ago. The first state park is the highlands hammock state park east of Sebring , florida. The park is a nice hiking trail park with about 10 trails for walking. Most trails are 20 to 30 minutes of walking and easy on the old people for walking like me. ( 62 years old ) They have a boardwalk trail 30 minute walk that takes you through the oldest section of the hammock....

Apr 4, 2007 - Indian Rocks, Florida to Sebring, Florida
Wednesday April 04, 2007 After breakfast, we slowly got packed up. The people beside us returned home last night. They had to return home for a few weeks. One of the other neighbours noticed one of the break lights was out. Ron had an extra light bulb, so fixed it. We left Indian Rocks Travel Park around 11:15. We headed down Umberton to Alt 19, then I275 across the Sunshine Bridge $2.00 toll. Down I75 to Hwy 64. At Zollo City, we headed down Hwy 66. We stopped for lunch at a shopping centre. We arrived at Buttonwood Bay around 3pm. Big...

Feb 28, 2007 - Wanchula, Florida
2/28 Today was the highlight of the month, year and maybe the century. At about 3:30 AM we got a phone call from our son Peter. At 2:59:59 AM his wife Tori gave birth to our first grandchild (and, of course, their first child), Joseph Pentti Tarkin. He weighed in at 6 lbs 2 oz and he was 19 ¾ inches long. He also came along with all the required parts and both Joseph and Tori are in good health - not sure about Peter, we forgot to ask. Even with all the excitement we managed to drive 88 miles and settle in at the SKP RV Resort in Wauchula,...

Jan 5, 2007 - From Very Old Friends to Mainely Old Friend
With urging from our friend Carol Andrews, we changed our original plan and went to visit with her at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Clermont, FL where we are now members complete with free camping at over 100 campground resorts across the US. There is even one in Hershey PA where we plan on taking our girlies camping when we return with our RV to the east (although that won't be until the summer of 2008). Ken spent time rearranging our itinerary so that we can take advantage of these campgrounds as we cross the US. I rode my bike through...

Dec 26, 2006 - Wauchula, Florida
12/26 - 12/31 Ninety-four miles brought us to another of our RV club's campgrounds, The Resort in Wauchula, Florida. Along the way we ate at a 4 star Mexican restaurant called La Frontera (712 E. Broadway, Fort Meade, FL, 863-285-7987). Delicious pork burritos. During our stay we went to the clubhouse for their New Year's Eve celebration. As usual Ken made it to bed by 10:00 PM and Joan woke him up at midnight to make sure he did not miss the NY ball's descent. The weather was pretty nice so Joan got some swimming in at the campground pool....

From Shelli: I'm of the opinion that satisfaction or disappointment about an experience is directly related to one's level of expectation. So, how was I to keep anticipation balanced when going to "the happiest place on earth" and meeting up with magical friends as well? I'm not sure I did, but it worked out just fine. My biggest problem today is choosing one memory above all the others to write about in this entry. I think I'll go with the tea cup ride, because the memory is filled laughter and history. Our cup was filled to capacity....
