Feb 23, 2014 - Rv Griffin Reserve Or Preserve ?????

A reserve or preserve is the same thing, they are just interchangeable words to be used when ever you like!!! Norma and I went up to the preserve to take a walk on the wild side of town, get out into the woods and see strange things that you dont see at home. We went Geocaching and trail walking on Sunday afternoon at RV Griffin Preserve that has over 22 miles of trails for walking by people and people that want to ride their horses. We walked the part of the trail that has geocache containers placed near the trail. We were walking in the...

GEOCACHING 2014

Feb 2, 2014 - On the west coast!

We have made it to our destination in Venice, FL! We are staying at Rambler's Rest RV Resort for the month of February. I will report on the resort soon, but for now, here is our trip across central Florida and today's exploration of Punta Gorda. Our trip across the state was quick and easy. We had a bit of fog in the morning and the skies were cloudy as the fog lifted, but it was good weather for traveling. We saw acres and acres of orange groves! The land is so flat that it seems as if you can see forever and forever included millions of...

Jan 5, 2014 - Punta Gorda, Florida

Days 304 - 307 of The Big Trip January 2 Our drive, on this day, from Miami to Punta Gorda, was actually longer than we had originally planned - about 170 miles. The original plan was to stop in Naples, but Punta Gorda was actually a better location to do the things we wanted to do. Leaving our campground near Miami, we went west on the Tamiami Trail, across Alligator Alley. I saw only one alligator, but a multitude of birds kept us busy looking at wildlife. The bird book was constantly at my side. Even with that, there were several I...

Dec 28, 2013 - Coushaine's Family Christmas 2013

Hello Everyone, Well, today ends a GREAT week of fun down here in Florida! All our children flew down to spend the Christmas holiday with us and my parents in Punta Gorda, and we were busy every day! We spent a couple days visiting Downtown Disney and the Magic Kingdom which was a first for a couple of the kids. We also took a ride down the Peace River on the Nav-A-Gator and were able to see multiple alligators and birds. Multiple hours were spent playing Frisbee golf and then Miniature golf. For Frisbee golf, it was everyone against me,...

Dec 5, 2013 - Shell Creek

Joan couldn't lead a group of kayakers out today and I didn't want to be a leader, so I thought it wasn't going to happen. But then I heard that the "special" group of kayakers were going out and I got myself invited! I know how to be quiet and not scare off the wildlife and I proved it on this trip. We saw many turtles and I remember saying that this was probably the reason they named it shell creek! We also saw a couple of alligators, but I didn't have my camera ready for them. So, enjoy the turtle pictures!

Nov 17, 2013 - Muscle Car City at Punta Gorda

We've moved up the line staying at Waters Edge RV Resort in Punta Gorda. We thought it would be a good place to stay for a few days as we want to explore Fort Myers to the south and pick up our mail in Venice to the north. The RV park turned out to be nice with RV lots surrounding the little lake. We're away from any highways so it's very quiet at night. The weather hasn't totally cooperated - the cold front that swept the nation finally made it to south Florida so we've had some wind and clouds but not a lot of rain. Looking at Trip...

Nov 7, 2013 - Punta Gorda, FL - home, safe & sound

Hello Everyone, Well, after a quick 6000 mile start to our trip, we finally landed safe & sound at our house in Punta Gorda, FL. We plan on resting up for a week before we head further south to Key West and more adventures. While in Punta Gorda, we have settled into a nice routine of sleeping in, afternoon swims in the pool, and a few rounds of Frisbee Golf at one of the local courses! Every day has been beautifully sunny, temps around 85, and perfect for eating outside beside the pool in the lani...who knew retirement was this...

Sep 22, 2013 - Last Day Of Summer

This is the last day of summer, so we went up to Punta Gorda area to look for some DNF caches that is "DID NOT FIND" CONTINERS over 2013. We still could not find the first three caches in that area. We did not have a smile on our face, Norma like to sign the log sheets and SHE DOES NOT LIKE TO SAY WE DID NOT FIND THOSE CACHES..We drove over to the Yellow brick road and Wizard of oz cache on the same road. As we arrived we saw a vehicle at the end of the yellow brick road , maybe it might be the "TIN MAN or "SCRAWCROW". We stopped next to...

Sep 15, 2013 - ANOTHER CEMETERY

I have about 150 caches out in the area and wanted to do something big with the caches and I have came up with a challenge for the people that love a challenge in geocaching. I shall bring all the different types of caches into one big caching series where you can solve puzzles, power runs, multi caches, night time caches and even earthcaches. Combine all the different caches and things to do over a four county area , I hope to have this working close to the winter season. I want the snowbirds to be able to have fun also , while they are...

Apr 18, 2013 - kayaking in the morning

Out at the very western edge of Punta Gorda is the Ponce de Leon Park with a boat launch into the Peace River outlet to the Gulf. We put in there and traveled amongst the mangrove islands for the most part, away from the open water and wind. It was a nice paddle and we saw split-tail kites overhead, herons on our sides, and then crabs on the mangrove branches! If a crab has one pronounced claw and one little one, it is a fiddler crab, otherwise it is a tree crab. I got as close as I could to some crabs, but I couldn't tell which kind I was...

Feb 15, 2013 - Birds in Punta Gorda

Chic and Marilyn are entertaining guests from their hometown this weekend (Kelly & Heidi & their 10 month old daughter Cammie) and I was invited to join them. This afternoon we went up to Ponce de Leon Park at the far west end of the city. Peace River Wildlife Refuge is in one corner of the park and is where people bring in injured birds, turtles, and native mammals to be cared for without euthanization, if possible. I have been here before and have pictures of the native birds in their cages, so I just walked through it, enjoying the work...

Feb 13, 2013 - Prairie Creek

A group of Carefree Paddlepushers went on a kayaking trip a day early because the weather is supposed to be kind of bad tomorrow and there is a lot going on at the resort because of Valentine's Day. Outside of Punta Gorda is a road that goes past two creeks that flow into the Peace River. A couple of people went up Shell Creek but most of us went a mile further and put in at Prairie Creek. Shell Creek has the easiest put-in, dedicated to kayaks and canoes, but Prairie Creek has a hard put-in because there is a big drop-off just past the end...
