Apr 2, 2015 - Peace River rookeries!

The Carefree Paddlepushers drove further up along Peace River to a new launching spot 12 miles east of Punta Gorda on Hunter Creek. After just a short distance we found what the locals here call Bird Island. There were lots of wood storks and black vultures nesting there. We went further down and found a channel that led to the Peace River just upstream from the rookery I visited twice so far this year. I found my way to a small inlet to get the pictures of the egret pair up in the mangroves and the spoonbill that came out to feed. One...

Mar 29, 2015 - Visit with Gette & Rosemary

Gette & Rose traveled across the state to come see me and where I live. We had lunch at Cactus Jack's on a canal next to the Caloosahatchee River in North Fort Myers on Saturday. Then I showed Gette what pickleball was like, and I introduced them to Cindy. We visited with Chic & Marilyn for a bit, then went into Fort Myers for cocktails and dinner. There was a classic car show going on in the historic district so it was fun to see the cars, the architecture of the buildings, and check out restaurants. We ended up at Ford's Garage, had a few...

Mar 24, 2015 - Shell Creek Paddle

Cindy came with me this morning to the dulcimer jam up at the Port Charlotte Cultural Center and then we immediately went to Hathaway Park for a paddle on Shell Creek, one of my favorite places. We heard and then finally saw a pileated woodpecker working away on the ground amidst a bunch of bushes and trees. Soon after leaving the launch site, we saw a purple gallinule amongst the reeds. Then we saw the turtles and alligators I expected we would see. We also saw rare sightings of a limpkin and a very active bees' nest high up in a tree. I...

Mar 18, 2015 - Peace River

Kayaking on a Wednesday this week due to conflicts and only 3 could go out with Joan. So, as an impromptu trip, we went to a little park east of Punta Gorda in a town called Harbor Heights. The Peace River was wide by the breeze was gentle and the waves mild. This is the same place we boated a couple of weeks ago for a moonlight ride to a rookery. We were commenting how good it would be if we got to the rookery and I doubted we would, thinking it was quite a ways upriver. But, after an hour and a half, we saw the rookery in the distance!...

I was on the computer looking for some caches and found caches and a place to kayak.Shell creek is just north of Punta Gorda , Florida about 45 minute drive for me . Shell creek is one of this area's popular kayak destinations, never been up this way yet. Try coming here during the weekday and not on the weekend ,...

10 of us paid for an exclusive boat ride in late afternoon to go up the Peace River to a rookery that can only be seen by boat! We bought subs from the local grocery store and were treated to snacks and beers by the crew! The beer was locally made but I forget the name of the place and I only liked a few of the beers, but life is good! the boat ride was sponsored by the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center and they only do these rides about once a month! thanks to Pam & Deb for finding it and asking me to join them!

May 29, 2014 - Caloosa Winnies Meeting in Punta Gorda

Caloosa Outing Our second Caloosa outing proved to be even more fun than the first. This was the annual Kentucky Derby outing and held at the Alligator RV Park, which happens be to the home for our work camper friends Jim and Carol Higgins, who we got to spend a little time with before they headed north for the summer. Each of the Caloosa Winnie gatherings seems to have some sort of a theme, this one was the Kentucky Derby. Each evening is started with happy hour, which is as it should be, followed by going out to eat (oh yea), a pot luck...

Apr 24, 2014 - Last Paddle of the Season

Five of us went to Prairie Creek on this fine day for my last kayaking adventure with the Carefree Paddlepushers this season. I had Mare's kayak along with mine - both are Hurricanes and 11.5 feet long, but hers is red. We didn't see any alligators but we did see turtles! The spider lilies were fantastic! Ice cream in Punta Gorda afterwards was quite the treat!

Apr 20, 2014 - Punta Gorda and Easter

From our Caloosa Cottage in Alva, FL ... Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 We had a very nice Easter here. We set our alarms early to get up attend the Sunrise Service down by the river here in Oak Park. The people here put on a very nice program. The men's choir sang several songs, another guy preached a very good message, while another lady read scriptures from the Easter story. Instead of setting up 200 chairs down by the river, everyone rides their golf carts down and just sits in the cart for the service. Later in the day we attended the...

We went over to KFC for our Sunday afternoon meal of chicken and then after that nice meal we needed to take a walk. The county of Collier had gotten the ranch to make into a preserve with walking trails and a 10 site campground with restrooms and shower. After eating we headed over to the west end of the trail to do the rest of the caches on the Griffin Preserve Trail.
