Feb 15, 2013 - Birds in Punta Gorda

Chic and Marilyn are entertaining guests from their hometown this weekend (Kelly & Heidi & their 10 month old daughter Cammie) and I was invited to join them. This afternoon we went up to Ponce de Leon Park at the far west end of the city. Peace River Wildlife Refuge is in one corner of the park and is where people bring in injured birds, turtles, and native mammals to be cared for without euthanization, if possible. I have been here before and have pictures of the native birds in their cages, so I just walked through it, enjoying the work...

Feb 13, 2013 - Prairie Creek

A group of Carefree Paddlepushers went on a kayaking trip a day early because the weather is supposed to be kind of bad tomorrow and there is a lot going on at the resort because of Valentine's Day. Outside of Punta Gorda is a road that goes past two creeks that flow into the Peace River. A couple of people went up Shell Creek but most of us went a mile further and put in at Prairie Creek. Shell Creek has the easiest put-in, dedicated to kayaks and canoes, but Prairie Creek has a hard put-in because there is a big drop-off just past the end...

Jan 4, 2013 - More Punta Gorda

1/4/13. Happy Birthday Abigail and Emily Rowe! The twins that I helped with 1 day a week are 2 years old today. Ron takes Tom and I to 2 farmers market. The first is a combination flea/market, fresh strawberries from Plant City, Yum. The 2nd market is downtown and more upscale. Fresh bread, cheeses, Asian veggies, etc. In the afternoon we take a Trolley Tour of Punta Gorda, a cool day. In the 1800's the town was named after Trabue, a man who owned large parcels of land, he fell out of favor and the name was changed to Punta Gorda (fat...

Dec 16, 2012 - Christmas Boat Parade!

Chic and I went up to Punta Gorda and saw a beautiful sunset and about an hour later, a nice boat parade with rich people showing off their lights on their yachts, fishing boats, and sailing boats. We found great seats on the deck right in front of the restaurant/bar at the end of Fisherman's Village. It wasn't crowded and the boats came by right in front of us at the end of the parade! I had wanted to go to downtown Miami to see the boat parade there, but the traffic, parking, and maneuvering through all those people didn't appeal to me to...

Jul 5, 2012 - Wooden limb ????

We went out Geocaching over the fourth of July and this container was found after we looked around the tree , down the tree, up the tree and in the tree. We did find the container after looking here and there and everywhere. People can come up with different things to blend in with the area. The container was a piece of a limb that was sawed off and had a pipe stuck in the end of the limb and a hole was drilled into the tree , so the limb could slide into the drilled hole and look like part of the tree. The pipe was hollow so they could...

Jul 4, 2012 - GEOCACHING

We left the campground around 10 a.m. to drive over to Zolfo Spring which is about thirty miles from us for the start of the "CRACKER TRAIL". This trail ride begins at a site just east of Bradenton , Florida and ends in Fort pierce , florida. The week - long ride is approximately 110 miles long , riding an average of 15 miles each day for the cowboys of 1800's that herded 1000's of head of cattle to market. Every Feb people can ride horseback and wagons on the same trail as the early cowboys did in those days. Now most people love to ride...

Jul 3, 2012 - Riverside Rv Resort

We left on Tues for a one hour trip up to our campground on the Peace River , we arrived to find a very nice campground with very nice people running the place. We wanted to get away from it all and this time of the year is the place to do that. They have winter people who fill up the place from top to bottom like from Nov into April. Then you have the summer people who love to be on the river fishing and floating down the river on a hot afternoon in July on a inner tube or house boat. We got the camper set up and got to talk with a few...

May 20, 2012 - FUN ON SUNDAY

Norma and I went out with the dogs to do some Geocaching for the day. We had fun out in nowhere land up around Punta Gorda , Florida . It was out in the county where the cows roam and the cowboys play. We came up on a few little calfs and cow out on the road eating the greener grass where they should not be. We took a few pictures and the cows just walked over to the fence , put head between the wire, lefted the string wire and stepped over back into the field. This was out in the county where was no houses nor cars, just our truck was the...

Apr 18, 2012 - Departure from Punta Gorda, Florida

Departing from Punta Gorda was a bit of a challenge with the sale of our home while in the midst of preparing for this trip. Additionally, John was tied up with a number of last minute work related details. We actually moved aboard the Silver Manatee on April 1st. The subsequent 2 weeks were filled with the closing of our home, moving everything into storage and last minute preparatory details for our land cruise. We came to realize that due to Spring Break we could not stay in one location during this period, but needed to move 4 times!...
