Mar 3, 2016 - Manatees and Spanish Moss

On March 1, we drove to Homosassa Springs State Park. (Interesting note, there are about 20 paid employees and 350 volunteers, most "silvers.") An electric pontoon boat took us to and from the wildlife area. Along the way we saw dozens of green slider turtles, nesting ospreys, and an alligator. There are three manatee which are permanent residents, as they could not be rehabilitated to live in the wild. They are all much bigger than they'd be in the wild, 3,000 pounds to 1,200. They are on the spot for the three daily feedings of "tossed"...

Feb 25, 2016 - More Life in Florida

Not every day has something to report, but a few things are highlights. Tuesday the 16th we had lunch at Short Stack, a BBQ restaurant. The smoked Reuben had me at hello and Joe reported the smoked brisket was outstanding. Thursday it was Argento's for and Italian sub and shrimp scampi for Joe (wonderful). We finally got a long stretch of nice weather, in the seventies and mostly sunny. On Saturday evening we were invited to a campfire (one pit in the park, south of the clubhouse) by neighbors Dan and Kathy; three other couples...

Feb 13, 2016 - February v2

On Friday the 5th, the quilters worked until about 2:30, broke camp, and reconvened to have dinner at La Bella Napoli in Aripeka. The food was very good; I had a house special of chicken and Italian sausage with two kinds of peppers over linguine. I hope to return, with Joe. On Monday the 8th Don arrived for a visit and the next day we all went to the Florida State Fair in Tampa; it still seems weird to have a state fair in February. We took in the entire range of exhibits, from goats to quilts to fish tanks (go figure). We also watched...

Feb 6, 2016 - Weather Extremes

Monday, February 1st was a beautiful, sunny day with a high of 78F. We drove to Tarpon Springs, Sponge Capitol of the World. There’s an informative video that demonstrates the harvesting and cleaning process still done much as it was when the Greek immigrants settled the area. No diving is done in the winter, so we didn’t take the mock harvesting excursion. There are many shops, from the ticky-tacky to the over-priced resort wear. Lots of places sell the sponges of many species; other popular items are olive-oil-based soaps and lotions. One...

Jan 31, 2016 - January Draws to an End

We seem to have settled into a pattern including Monday Coffee Hour (get the scoop on the week ahead) Exercise Walking class, Mahjongg, and Quilting Fridays. On Sunday the 24th we went to the Florida Aquarium in Tampa (photos posted). I thought it was pricey for its size, though it is very nice and well-maintained. (I suppose there are not too many that can compete with the Shedd and the one in Atlanta?) On Monday the 25th we drove to Avon Park to visit my father and his wife. They gave us a shuffleboard lesson; we enjoyed that and the...

Jan 20, 2016 - Time Flies

We have been at JaMar for nearly three weeks already; I don't know where the time has gone. We continue to take part in a few of the park activities; many more are available. This past Saturday was weather perfection: 76-78F and sunny with a light breeze. This was the only day we've had so far that was what I'd "order." High winds with gusts of 40mph began in the early a.m. and stayed with us until midday Sunday. Since then, we've had real ups and downs, but no temperature above 56F. Yesterday, intending to visit a quilt shop in Palm Harbor...

Jan 11, 2016 - Chilly Monday

Today is day 14 of this adventure. Things have been very low key, but it's time to add a couple of photos. Friday it was warm and humid. I joined the quilting group for part of the session; I learned they make a day of it and I was encouraged to bring lunch next week and stay longer. Joe and I tried Sonny's BBQ south on 19; it was pretty good, smoked chicken salad and pulled pork. We had ventured far enough that we were within range of Rainbow's End Quilt Shoppe, so we checked that out and I acquire some fat quarters. Saturday we visited...

Jan 7, 2016 - Getting to Know the Neighborhood

This is the morning of our seventh day in Florida. There hasn’t been any “travel” to report and we’ve been spending time doing maintenance and tweaking our setup. We’re getting into some of the park activities. Three days a week I’m going to Walking Exercise (in the clubhouse, to videos, “killer”). I went to the church service on Sunday and we attended Coffee Hour on Monday; this included a prayer for the sick (LOTS of old people here; I may be the youngest), Pledge of Allegiance, Oh Canada, Star Spangled Banner, announcements, comedy,...

Jan 1, 2016 - New Year's Arrival

We experienced a lot of heavy rain as we entered Florida. We made sandwiches at a rest area and kept on truckin'. We wondered why so many RV's were heading north on 75. Moving to Arizona or Texas maybe? At 75 and 52 there were three accidents, but we were not significantly delayed. It was sunny, 83 and HUMID when we arrived at our temporary home, Ja-Mar North in Port Richey. It took some finagling to get backed in properly; we took the time to get it right, since it's for two months or more. Our neighbor to one side is the president of the...

Nov 5, 2015 - GOING TO PASCO

We have a few more things to do after getting home from a three month trip to find out that the young boy who cut our grass did not know that he was to trim also. We found weeds and grass growing that would take us about a week to cut and trim. After all that work while not go have some fun. Time to pack up the camper and go up to Port Richey , Florida for a weekend of fun running around in the woods hunting for those ammo cans.

GEOCACHING PGFEST

Jan 21, 2015 - Port Richey, FL

Today we head off once more, heading North on I-75 to once again meet up with Glenn, Connie, Rocky, and Lana. Exiting on FL-52, we turn West to US-19 and Ja-Mar RV Resort. Another short trip only 55 miles. We've been here before and while the campground is pretty tight as far as room between units, the price is good and the area has everything we'd want. Marley is not especially impressed because dogs are only allowed on a very few selected streets. The occupants are mostly from Quebec, so there is very little conversation other than the...
