Feb 2, 2020 - board Harmony of the Seas

We left the campground at 9:30 and by 10:45 we were checked in and onboard the Harmony of the Seas - certainly a record for speed and efficiency that is unparalleled from our experience. Not only was the process made easier by the fact that we were less than twenty miles away from the port, but by the fact that technology allows us to do more and more of the work of checking in, which is done by the passengers from their easy chairs at home. Long before today we entered our passport information, credit card #, photos of our faces, and...

Jan 25, 2020 - Port Canaveral, FL

Jan 25, Port Canaveral  We arrived in port around 6 am.  We had our last breakfast, grabbed our luggage and headed to the theatre to wait to disembark.  They did it very orderly. Diamond guests met in a dining room and got off first. Platinum guests (us) were in the theater.  They sat us in rows and we left in the order we came in. We nearly filled the bottom of the theater. The only thing they could improve is that they only had 2 elevators open at first.  Finally they opened a third. We were off the ship and on our way to the airport by 8...

Jan 13, 2020 - Sea Day

Jan 13 Off to the gym again for me.  I was just finishing up when the sun peeked over the horizon.  I didn't get a picture until a few minutes later. It's another sea day, so we did the usual of walking and reading.  We played some trivia, first geography, then I Love Lucy. The deck 5 hot tubs were a little warmer, but we decided to skip them.  I went to the back hot tub for a bit this am. The place was packed with people back there, as the Serenity Deck is still closed due to the winds.  The winds were still blowing up to about 70 mph. We...

Jan 12, 2020 - Sea Day

Jan 12 We got up early and I went to the gym while Jim walked.  Our omelets for breakfast were delicious. It's very humid today and very, very windy.  It was quite hazy for awhile. While walking, we had to go to a lower deck from deck 11, as it just about knocked us over, and tried to steal my flip flops!  We played a couple of games of dominos while listening to a trivia contest. Jim won the first and I beat him the second game. Around 11, the sun started to come out.  We did Guy's Burgers for lunch. They have the best handcut fries! We...

Jan 11, 2020 - Carnival Breeze, Port Canaveral, FL

Jan 11 We took one last walk this am and then caught the shuttle to Port Canaveral.  It left about 11:20 and we were on board at 12. The Breeze has a nice drain, but could use an update.  It does have a more tropical appearance than others. We unpacked, walked, and soaked up the sun in the hot tub on deck 5.  We were the only ones using it, which was nice. We had dinner with a couple from the Boone, NC area. Vegetable lasagne for me and chicken for Jim.  I had 2 appetizers, a delicious smoke quesadilla and the Strawberry bisque. Jim had...

Feb 17, 2019 - another view

Last week we spent a delightful three days camped at Jetty Park watching the cruise ships sail by in Port Canaveral. Nearby we investigated the Port Canaveral lock and saw that you could take a boat tour that came through the lock and sailed into the harbor amidst the cruise ships. It looked like fun and on a hot, winter day we boarded the Blue Dolphin on Merritt Island and took the trip. Geography is a bit tricky here. You feel like you are on the ocean, even when you're not. Our sail began on the Banana River, which is not a river at all,...

Feb 6, 2019 - Jetty Park

Whenever we are on a cruise, the sails in and out of ports are especially thrilling. Often locals gather to watch and wave. And we watch and wave right back. When we sailed into Port Canaveral last fall, we looked down on a campground from our balcony. We've known about Jetty Park and tried to get a site here a number of times over the years to no avail. The campground is not large and sitting on your lawn chair watching the cruise ships sail in and out appeals to many. In the past we looked for site vacancies where we could get water and...

Nov 8, 2018 - so near and yet so far

Originally this cruise was scheduled to head right to Miami. Now we are docked about 45 minutes drive away from where our motor home has been waiting for us in Titusville. We considered just getting off here, but RCL makes you pay extra to get off the cruise a day early; they really don’t want you to do that. RCL has just opened a new cruise port in Miami and they have opening day jitters. With a ship this size a little glitch can cause passengers to miss their flights home. Therefore, we went through immigration here, which will make...

Mar 21, 2018 - In the planning stages...

This journal will document the trip Shirley and I are taking. We are embarking from Port Canaveral on the Norwegian Epic on April 7, 2018. We sail 15 days to Barcelona Spain. At that time we will stay on the ship for a B2B (back-to-back) 7 day Mediterranean cruise. I'm setting this up to allow friends and family to follow our journey and communicate with us while we are gone. I'll be able to add photos when we have wifi.

Apr 23, 2017 - Mickey Mouse

Finally Disney Day arrives. We are to leave the QV at 8.30 on a coach to Disney World. We board the coach which we are told will take around 90 minutes to get there. The traffic flows well until we get to Disney where everyone in America has decided this is the day to visit Disney so as Ian said we joined Gridlock World! We had pre purchased our tickets as recommended by our concierge to save time. The instructions say we need to collect them from a different area and will need to get a taxi when we are dropped off. Our guide on the coach...

Jan 15, 2017 - Space Centre

We set off for our next Port. We found out just before left that our itinerary had been changed and instead of having 2 days in Fort Lauderdale we were to have one and we would moor at Port Canaveral first. We were told this was due to immigration issues. We were pleased because we could now visit the space centre. The weather has been gorgeous and the sea really smooth. The temperature is 26 degrees and the sea is a warm 25 degrees! Lots of sunbathing and relaxing in the sun. Sorry to all you people back home in the snow and rain! Port...

Jan 13, 2017 - what to preserve

We took a tour of the lighthouse of the Cape Canaveral today. At least that's what we thought we were doing. We ended up doing that and much more. It used to be easy to visit the lighthouse. You drove out there and there it was. Now because it is located inside the naval air station and the world has become such a dangerous place, you have to submit your ID info a few days prior to your visit so that some bureaucrat can verify that you are not a terrorist and you are allowed to enter the base. Generally, you think about a lighthouse as a...
