Feb 29, 2012 - Sunsets at Playa del Rio

One of the very best parts of being in lower Alabama and Perdido Key, Florida are the gorgeous sunsets. They vary nightly, but all are beautiful. I am posting just a few of the sunset photos I took this winter so you can enjoy them with us!

Feb 28, 2012 - Food, Fun and Friendship at Playa Del Rio

We spend a lot of time eating and having fun with friends at Perdido Key! The group that is staying here for the winter is awesome. Many couples have been here for several winters, while others are here for the first time, but we have become one big happy family. Every evening we have 5:00 Happy Hour down at the clubhouse. Whether it is soda, coffee, tea, alcohol, wine or water - everyone comes down, visits, teases, laughs, and watches the incredible sunsets over the Ol' River together. And we eat - and eat - and eat. It is a good thing I...

Dec 31, 2011 - New Year's Eve at Playa del Rio RV Park

We arrived on New Year's Eve at Perdido Key and Playa del Rio RV Park for our third winter visit, just in time to meet up with a bunch of our RVing friends to celebrate the New Year of 2012. The people we have met here are the best and we love to visit here!

Feb 26, 2011 - Pensacola Lighthouse Pensacola, FL

I enjoy hiking to the top of lighthouses. 177 steps to the top. The view from the top is usually great. There are 16 Gargoyle heads aligned with 16 round knobs on the hand rail at the top of the lighthouse that are aligned with the 16 points of the compass. It is also the most haunted lighthouse in the US. There are these painted Pelicans all over Pensacola.

Feb 26, 2011 - Pirates’ of the Lost Treasure of the Mardi Gras Perdido Key, FL 022611

While walking Rascal one day I stopped to read the campground bulletin board. There was a notice about a boat parade for the “Pirates of the Lost Treasure of the Mardi Gras”. The flotilla ends at FloroBama - the Florida /Alabama line on Perdido Key - and everyone has a big party.

Feb 6, 2011 - food feasts in FL and AL

We do enjoy socializing at the RV Park! This Thursday, Fred and I hosted the third shrimp feast held at the park since we arrived on New Year's Day. This time we had yummy fried shrimp, super tasty steamed shrimp, and also delicious grilled shrimp. Our friends Tommy and Peggy rode over to Joe Patti's in Pensacola with Fred and me to get lots of fresh shrimp. I helped as prep and clean up chef and made a darn good strawberry cheesecake pie for dessert, but Fred and Peggy did the most work, preparing the fried and grilled shrimp. Other RV...

Jan 20, 2011 - Fun in Florida continues

We have been enjoying our time here at Playa del Rio RV Park in Perdido Key, FL! The RV park is tiny - there are only about 30 slots for RVs, but it is located on lovely Old River which separates narrow Perdido Key from even smaller Ono Island. The Intracoastal Waterway is just on the other side of Ono Island; some days we as we drive along Canal Road we can watch the barges and cruisers heading up or down the Intracoastal. There is a dock on the river at the end of the RV park where we watch the pelicans, the great blue herons and...

Jan 5, 2011 - Our Home Away from Home

We moved to Perdido Key, Fl and the Playa del Rio RV Park on New Year's Day. Arriving at the park, we were quickly greeted by several couples we had met in January of last year. They reminded us that the 5 PM social/happy hour would be held in the little clubhouse by the river and we were expected to be there, so of course we go every evening! The sunsets here are still gorgeous, and the beach is clean with no signs of the oil problem except a couple times when I have been walking, I have encountered "BP clean up crews" walking the beach...

Jan 28, 2010 - beautiful sunset today!

No real news today, because we just rode the Harley around the area looking at the countryside, pecan groves, some beautiful homes, and the water - intracoastal, the bay, and the gulf, etc. but at our usual happy hour, Fred snapped all these photos within a half hour, from 5:27 PM to 5:38 PM. This is what we look at every evening at happy hour - just click on the first one and get the slide show started - you can pretend you are here with us, OK? Not bad, huh?

Feb 1, 2008 - Playa del Rio RV Park, Perdido Key, Florida

We arrived at Playa del Rio RV park January 15th, and sunny warm Florida hasn't been so warm. It is roller coaster weather. Some days have been rainy and cold, and some days are in the 60's and very sunny. The Mardi Gras festivities are in full swing all around us, and friends we have met from past years are coming back to camp from one week to three months. Piper loves this park because it is really dog friendly, and there are lots of dogs. The internet service and cell phone service is excellent! The area also has a wide variety of...

Jan 30, 2008 - Perdido Key, Pensacola, FL

Our destination today is Perdido Key near Pensacola, FL. It's very close to the AL border. We stayed at this park last year about this same time and met lots of friends, so we wanted to stop in again. The same people come here every winter for several months, so it's like a family get together. It's a small park of only 30 sites. When we arrived here several people came to meet us and catch up on the years events. Each evening at 5:00 p.m. most of the RVers gather at the recreation center to visit.
