May 2, 2006 - Alabama Gulf Coast

Arrived at the Escapees' Rainbow Plantation Park here in Summerdale, AL on Tuesday, May 2nd, after an 8 hour drive from Ocala, FL. We spent 2 nights at the Coach Care place in Ocala, to get some work done on the coach. Their facilities are excellent (water and electric HUs, and a place to park the car). Their charge for service was very reasonable, so they are on our list of places to use for RV chassis work. The Plantation is a beautiful park - huge sites, very well kept and clean. This is only the 2nd Escapee park we've been to (Sumpter...

Apr 27, 2006 - Milton, FL

We left Mobile this (Thursday) morning, knowing that we wouldn't make it too far. We decided to take a side trip to the National Navy Air Museum in Pensacola (www.naval-air.org). It was an extensive display of aircraft, most of them were suspended from the ceiling. It also let you see the inside of a refurbished ship, with all the amenities that would have been found in it 'back in the day' such as a tiny dentist's room, living quarters, mess hall, etc. The museum sits along the bay, and the beaches here are all white sand. We are in...

Apr 5, 2006 - Foley & Mobile, Alabama

We've come to Foley, Alabama to see Troy, an old friend of Joe's. Troy "taught Joe everything he knows about construction" and his work ethic in the field (he credits his mom with his basic work ethic). His mentor. Troy has been in Foley for just over a year, building a hotel, and he invited us to "come on over". So we did. We also want to see Mobile and it's a day trip from Foley. However, we expected Foley, Alabama to be a small Alabama town. Well, it ain't. It's right between Pensacola, Florida & Gulf Shores, Alabama. Which means it's...

Mar 29, 2006 - Near disaster at Perdido Key

After a pleasant week on the Gulf Shore, we headed for Florida. Then a few miles later, just after we crossed the border into Florida, we barely escaped having a bad accident with a cement truck! The truck driver, we don't know if he dropped something or what, but he crossed about 5'-6' over the double yellow line into our lane right in front of us! Terry leaned on the horn and pulled over as far to the right as he could (it was a narrow road) and the truck driver recovered enough for us not to really collide badly. The only damage was his...

Mar 22, 2006 - Gulf Shore, Alabama

Terry had planned to play golf at several of the Robert Trent Jones courses in Alabama, the first of which was near Foley. After his game, he was driving around and he discovered an Alabama State Park a couple of miles away, at Gulf Shores. It is just about a half mile from the Gulf of Mexico coast and has a few lakes where he could fish, etc. I think he only played one more round of golf nearby and the rest of the time he fished. We had a nice camp spot about 75' from the lakeshore, where he kept his boat in the water and fished whenever...

Nov 1, 2005 - Lousy Weather Causes Minor Plan Change

Wow! We got pounded by rain all through the night. It was like the sky saved up all the moisture form our month of clear days and then dumped it all on us last night. Well not quite all of it - some was saved back to drop on us today as we hitched up and moved. We are so glad that we stowed everything yesterday. And it looked like we might have dodged the rain as we disconnected our hook-ups, but then the deluge came. Even with our rainsuits on, we got soaked. It did not look like the rain was going to stop, so we couldn't even wait it out....

May 20, 2005 - Pensacola to New Orleans

Finally, a decently small trip leg that won't wear us out! Before we left the Milton KOA, we thought we would try the continental breakfast the park attendant had mentioned was available. We investigated this morning and found all they offered was coffee and vending machine stuff. Not what we had in mind, and not faithful to their claim. We snarled our disapproval and went back to Homer and had a hot dog. Yes, a hot dog. It was great. Sandy and I aren't very discriminating when it comes to breakfast food. We're just as likely to cook a...

Homer and the Hornet

Jun 9, 2004 - Today is Tommy's Birthday

Larry and I and now Madeline have been listening to "the five people you meet in heaven" and a lot of Mitch Albon's story revolves around the main character's birthday. Today is mine and its been great so far. Left the hotel this morning at 9 AM, which is a compromise between getting going and sleeping late. My first birthday present. Drove to Gainesville and had breakfast before noon. We then followed the "Pugh signs" and stopped at the "swamp" to see where our #1 gator made his mark. Amazing the likeness on the statue John. Brought us...

Feb 17, 2003 - Tallahassee & Pensacola

Off to Tallahassee in the rain -- but that ended fairly quickly, and back into the sunshine. Over the Swannee River and lots of Stephen Foster trinket shops! A quick run through Tallahassee (where they put the "DA" in Florida recently...) and off again to the coast and a night at a KOA at Alligator Point. Didn't see any of them, but this is really a beautiful, isolated spot on Florida's Forgotten Coast. Although cooler than down south (we actually ran the heater in the Van), this coastline is really pretty and not nearly as crowded as other...
