Apr 23, 2010 - Florida Bay

Friday afternoon: From the Anhinga Trail we got on the park’s main road and drove 34 miles southwest to Flamingo. Along the way elevations varied from 3 feet to 4 feet above sea level, and the ponds we passed changed from fresh water to brackish water. At Flamingo the park meets the sea. Elevation is zero and the water is salt. A private concession runs boat tours out of the Flamingo marina, and we boarded one headed for the open water of Florida Bay. Florida Bay is the shallow body of blue-green water that covers the limestone shelf off...

Apr 21, 2010 - Reunion

A happy re-union! Andy carpooled to work and left us his truck, so we drove it to Uncle Bob’s Storage yard in Boca. Our baby was sitting right were we left her on December 7th last year, and she sure looked good! The rest of the day was spent restocking groceries, gassing up and getting ready to travel. By evening we were tired but happy - and ready to take the kids on an adventure to the Keys tomorrow.

2010 Race 2 Finish

Dec 3, 2009 - Closing the loop

Returning to where we started in April - Parkland, Florida - Thursday, December 3 On Thursday morning we made a Camping World run and picked up a surge protector and a new barbecue, then we took our baby over to the truck scales and had her weighed, fully loaded for next year's trip. The RV weighed in at under 13,000 pounds which is over half a ton under the load limit, so it looks like there will be room for all the rocks Madolyn has collected when we take it home to California next year. We got on the road a little after noon and had a...

Apr 10, 2009 - a new Camera!

Trying out our new Canon camera as we get ready to go on the road - Thursday and Friday, April 9 and 10 We had planned to leave Parkland and get on the road by Thursday, but we were waiting on some mail being forwarded from home, so the departure got postponed until Saturday morning. Thursday: We spent the time running errands and doing last minute chores, like getting Madolyn to the dentist to have a tooth filled. Friday: I took advantage of the down-time Friday to load software and start learning to use our new Canon Power Shot SX10...

Apr 8, 2009 - an 82 foot mountain

View from the summit - Wednesday, April 8 We broke camp just before noon and on our way out of the park we drove to the summit of Hobe Mountain and climbed it’s observation tower. At 82 feet above sea level the summit of Hobe Mountain is the highest ‘natural’ point in south Florida. They had to add the word ‘natural’ because the summit of Mount Broward (Broward County’s Dump and Landfill) has probably surpassed it. If the State of Florida doesn’t get better at recycling it will someday have a mountain range the equal of California’s...

Apr 5, 2009 - Running the sprinklers

Some last minute preparations - Saturday and Sunday, April 4 and 5 Saturday, April 4: We spent Saturday putting the finishing touches on our final preparation - stocking up on groceries and cleaning out all the bins and cupboards. Now we’re ready to go at last, and Monday we’ll take off with the kids for a couple of days before leaving on our longer journey and heading north. Sunday, April 5: We spent Sunday hanging out and running errands until late afternoon, then we all loaded up and drove to the golf course to watch Andy and Austin play...

2009 Spring 2 Fall

Apr 3, 2009 - End of the drought?

Back to Parkland in a Monsoon - Thursday and Friday, April 2 and 3 We got our motorhome back Thursday afternoon, the slide out now working perfectly. With everything mechanical in order, we spent the rest of the day organizing and getting ready to travel. Friday morning we left Lazy Days early and got on the road. The sky was dark and they were predicting five inches of rain for the Panhandle. We’re not on the Panhandle but we’re not far from it, and a storm that size is bound to dump some rain on the rest of Florida too. And so it did. The...

Mar 31, 2009 - Culture Shock

A fast trip across the southern United States - Tuesday, March 31 We awoke at 6:00 AM PDT in Los Angeles, California. Thirteen hours later we went to bed at 10:00 PM EDT in Parkland, Florida. In between we spent six and a half hours rocketing across the country in a pressurized tube. There’s a disconnect from reality when you travel so far so fast. A disconnect that’s measured in attitude and atmosphere, as much as in nautical miles. There’s a continent of distance between the hip streets of L.A. and the retirement colonies of south...

Dec 5, 2008 - Closing the loop

The return to where we started - Friday, December 5 We spent five days camped at Lazy Days and while we soon learned that it’s not perfect, it sure beats most RV parks for convenience and amenities. The staff is cordial, and best of all they are highly competent. We busied ourselves with end of trip chores, cleaning, packing and storing our coach for the 15 week hiatus between this year’s adventure and the one we hope to begin in March of 2009. We had a rental car which made things easier. It gave us a place to put the stuff we want to...

Apr 12, 2008 - the week in Broward County

Broward County - home of the infamous 'hanging chad' Saturday, April 5 through Saturday, April 12 We spent this week with our family in Parkland, helping Andy with the kids while Viki attended a five day business conference in Orlando. Andy would wake us up when he left for work at 6:00, and we would get the kids up by 6:45. Madolyn fixed their breakfasts and lunches, then I would walk Austin to the school bus at 7:20. When I got back Madolyn would drive Kielyn to school, a twenty mile round trip in rush hour traffic. During the week we...

Mar 30, 2008 - Sawgrass and Coral

Saturday, March 29 Sawgrass and coral - words that conjure up visions of a Florida that is disappearing fast. The Florida that existed before developers paved it over - before everyone north of the Mason-Dixon Line decided to move down here and retire. Today sawgrass and coral have other meanings. 'The Sawgrass' is an Expressway that takes us to 'Coral Springs', the south Florida town where our motorhome has been stored for the past two and a half months. Today we're on our way to pick it up, and it's a reunion we're looking forward to! We...

Dec 14, 2007 - Hot and Humid Parkland

We Finally reach our destination in Parkland, Florida Friday, December 14 We woke to a wet dashboard. Our windshield replacement is leaking again, a definite problem since we are planning to store the RV here in Florida for the next two or three months! But after the monsoon we went through last night it is not surprising. That combination of wind and rain would have found the weak spots in a nuclear bomb shelter. We dried everything off and got on our way. Our destination this time was our daughter's home in Parkland, about an hour...
