Jul 30, 2011 - Update on Doug

From JoAnn: Just wanted to let you know that the last few days have not been good ones for Doug. He is on increased pain medication which is relieving much of the pain, but the result is the loss of a lot of mobility & mental sharpness. This morning he fell & we (myself & 2 Hospice nurses) could not get him up & we had to get help from the guys from the Fire Department. We now have a hospital bed to make him more comfortable & to make his care easier. We appreciate all you positive thoughts, prayers, love and support!!!!!

Living Our Dream

Jul 25, 2011 - New Treatment Plan Being Installed

Last week when the Hospice nurse came in, Doug was "feeling groovy" since then declining into greater and greater discomfort. We are in the middle of vacation season at hospice and today get another nurse for a visit. It was again the old story; Doug not being very communicative and not understanding of their pain index numbers with maybe a touch self determination. JoAnn was also ebbing. Later this afternoon the nurse came back with an illustrated pain index and with the nurse watching him, asked him to move. He read the index properly, as...

Living Our Dream

Jul 21, 2011 - Shopping Travails

Tuesday we had a visit from a new hospice social worker because we changed venues on them. This was an attractive woman who was very interested in the RV life style and we had a good visit. The nurse had been here on Monday to upgrade Doug’s steroids an he was “feeling groovy” on Tues. Wednesday was the day we had Fillmore groomed for the first time in three months. Now we can recognize him. He doesn’t care but we think he’s better. Wed evening there was a jam session at Unity with choir members, musicians and musicians from our local area...

Living Our Dream

Jul 18, 2011 - Royal Treatment

Doug had a "restless" night last night which brought about some rule changes in the household. It seems that he has somehow been able to either dump the contents of his bedside table under the bed or on top of JoAnn's side of the bed for the last several nights in a row. He does this around three o'clock each morning which does not augment well for her sleep. As a result she has now posted his table as off limits for him. She also called up her allies and had the hospice nurse come in again. Together they determined that he was being...

Jul 5, 2011 - Reclaiming Our Park Model

We arrived in PCB shortly afternoon on Saturday in the middle of the hottest most crowded weekend of the year. Our "large" 900+ sq ft park model trailer had just come off of lease and we decided to drive down for the weekend. We were surprised to find that the place was in quite good order considering it had been rented on and off for 4 1/2 years. All the major appliances were relatively clean and in good working order. The closets and cabinets were in less perfect order with accumulations of dirty goods on top of broken goods mixed in with...

Living Our Dream

May 16, 2011 - St Andrew State Park in Panama Beach, FL

Short trip today (60 miles)to get to St Andrew State Park on the Gulf of Mexico at Panama Beach. This is one of the finest places we have ever camped at. Sites are right on the water and beaches are large with plenty of white sand. Bicycle paths cover the entire park and town is close enough to ride in for happy hour. Our first day was used to explore and get the camp site set up. Day two was a boating day using our porta-boat. We traveled looking at homes and boats in the area.

Apr 28, 2011 - Panama City Beach, Florida

Well our plans changed a little. After watching the weather last night and again this morning, and hearing that I-10 near Tallahasee should be avoided-heavy thunderstorms, tornado, we piddled around a litle and left about 9:30 am and decided to stay near the Gulf of Mexico and once we were on the road again, we would check and see what was happening in Tallahassee. Even had weather alerts sent to my cell. Did that for Gulf Shores as well as Tallahassee. Think that it's a good idea and will do that for the rest of the trip. Learned that...

Apr 21, 2011 - Panama City Beach

We took the 5th wheel to Panama City and camped at the Navy Base Campground. Sauncee and I arrived early on Friday and were met by our two boys and one of their friends late Friday afternoon. On Saturday morning we made a trip to Destin Florida for a little diving at the jetti location. Our youngest son and one of his buddies was doing their open water dives for their PADI dive certification. The water was cold and there was very little visibility but they got it done. We returned to Panama City and had dinner at Billy's Seafood. The place...

HUFF STUFF

Apr 1, 2011 - Southern Hospitality.

April 1, 2011: It is beautiful in Panama City this morning, but the temperature is more like Minnesota, 44° Fahrenheit, but a high of 76° is predicted with sunny skies. We've been here for a couple of days, visiting Hazel's Aunt Eunive, her son Ralph, and his family. The granddaughters live about a mile away, and they are delightful. Gracie is 3, Mackenzie 6, Chelsea is 13. Like most kids that age, they adore their grandparents and practically live over here. The first night, we all went to one of those "all you can eat and then-some"...

Feb 25, 2011 - Gina and Lexis Surprise

Steve and I went to dinner Wednesday night and shock of my life, Gina and Lexis walked in to surprise me. They had flown down for the occasion while Lex was out of school for Spring Break. I was absolutely speechless when they walked up to the table!!!! Apparently they had been planning this surprise, along with Steve's help, since Christmas. Needless to say, I was VERY glad to see them. After several days of beautiful sunny days with temperatures in the low 80s, it turned cloudy and cool yesterday, but we still enjoyed the day. We went...

Feb 18, 2011 - Warmer Weather

It's finally feeling more like beach weather. It's been in the 70s everyday this week with clear skies and bright sunshine. Went down to the beach today and took some pictures as we'll be leaving here March 1. Can't say I'm sorry to leave. Two months is too long to stay in one place for vagabonds like us. Unfortunately, we couldn't find anywhere we could take Sadie down on the beach. They're supposed to have a dog friendly park here, but to date, everywhere we go it's posted "no pets." The few places where you can take a pet are not on the...

Feb 15, 2011 - St. Andrews State Park, Florida

We are now in Florida near Panama City at St. Andrews State Park. I felt a little wistful saying goodbye to Alabama. I have to remind myself not to get too attached to where we are at any given time, since the journey itself is the magic. But there are so many images I want to remember...the lovely Alabama coastline, Fairhope, and even the music of another camper playing his accordion yesterday morning. I can't remember the last time we have heard an accordion. We couldn't actually see him because he was on the other side of the RV next to...
