Apr 25, 2014 - Costa Rica - Some Final Thought About the Trip

I've spent much of this week re-living the trip, working with photos and writing the blog. Although I've tried to think about what was my favorite part, I really can't come up with any specific thing other than just the experience of BEING in the rain forests and BEING surrounded by so much beauty for all those days. There are just so many highlights! One very special part for me came close to the end of our trip - getting to see the Resplendent Quetzal! It was a treat to get to know and travel with such friendly and compatable people from...

Apr 20, 2014 - We're Home!

Despite my good intentions, I didn't get a blog published daily while on my trip. My excuse: poor internet access and not enough time. I had to choose between experiencing Costa Rica or writing a blog. And, of course, Costa Rica won out! However, I plan to write about the trip over the next week so keep watching for updates. I only have about 1000 photos to sort through! We had to be at the San Jose airport 3 hours before our flight, so that meant catching the shuttle at 4 a.m. on Friday along with several others from our group. It was...

Apr 8, 2014 - Costa Rica.... Here We Come!

I'm back! After a long timeout from traveling (except in the Southeast), I'm getting ready to take off on another adventure. My daughter, Sue, and I are going to Costa Rica! We're traveling with Road Scholar (formerly known as Elderhostel), an educational based travel company that leads trips around the world. This is how they describe this trip: "Low-level clouds drift through the sweet cedar and hanging moss. Even in the dim sunlight, the orchid's flowers brighten your path as you hike. In this interdisciplinary introduction to Costa...

Living Our Dream

Feb 22, 2014 - Panama City Beach

The doctor told Debbie to go to the beach and breath the salt water air and he recommendation a nice place to eat while in Panama City Beach. So we took about 1 1/2 hour drive and went there for the day. Had a great time and did breath the salty air. The water there was crystal clear, but still a little chilly but you could swim in it. Panama City Beach is on the Gulf of Mexico instead of the Atlantic Ocean.

Feb 20, 2014 - Panama City Beach, FL

Hello Everyone, With only 6 days till Mardi Gras in New Orleans, we are getting closer as we stay at Panama City Beach on the Florida Panhandle! The weather is generally getting warmer as we head due west, but we also encounter days of intense wind and overcast skies. However, we find ourselves wearing shorts more these days as we travel all over Panama City Beach on the scooter! We went to Pier Park which is the main party spot for college Spring Break! It appears that in the next week or two this place is due to explode with college kids...

Dec 21, 2013 - Apalachee Bay to Panama City Beach Florida

We have spent 6 weeks in Florida, driven 7564 miles and are now headed West. We are in Robertsdale, Alabama (about 30 miles West of Pensacola and 30 miles East of Mobile) where we will stay for 12 days - through the holidays. This last week we left the Orlando area, stopped in Old Town, Fl for the night and then on to Crawfordsville, Fl at Shell point to visit friends Charles and Julia. They keep their boat at Cap Sante Marina and spend the summers in Anacortes, where we met them, and winter in Florida. We had a great visit, dinner and Vic...

We had a great 2 days with our grandson, David, his girlfriend, Brittany, his two children Blake and Cayla and Cayla's step-brother, Ty. Yesterday we went to Gulf World where we saw shows on dolphins and sea lion shows, feather and furs (birds, cats and dogs), and many other displays. ...

Feb 12, 2013 - The beach

We have been here not quite 24 hours and have seen the weather and sea change twice! The wind just switched back around to the southeast, ending the rain and bringing fog and foamy waves. Earlier it was from the north, with calm seas and light showers off and on. We have seen Common Loons fishing in the surf, as well as a Red Breasted Merganser and some Common Mergansers. We saw a couple of porpoises swimming offshore. And we watched the tiny sandpipers run up and down the beach just barely out of reach of each wave. How they know just how...

Feb 11, 2013 - Panama City Beach again

We flew through our ride today thanks to a strong tailwind. Boy, am I glad we weren't riding into that wind! The jet fighters were taking off as we rode through Tyndale AFB, and were really loud but with low clouds we never caught a glimpse of one. Log trucks were off work yesterday but are running today. Of course, you can hardly call what they are hauling logs, compared to the northwest. More like sticks. They range from around 12" in diameter at the base to about 2" at the end that hangs off the truck. We discovered the sticks are...

Feb 2, 2013 - Prettiest so far

It was a tad chilly when we left at 8:30 this morning, but the wind was not bad and the traffic was light. About 4 miles from the motel, we discovered we had forgotten our fresh, unopened packages of ham and cheese in the frig. Oh, well, we weren't going back! We left hwy 98 after 5 miles and found a bike lane that ran for 25 miles! It took us through the prettiest scenery we have seen so far. There were lots more people out walking or biking. We passed two couples, then realized one of the couples had turned around to follow us. It turns...

Dec 28, 2012 - Panama City Beach, FL

The is a one-nighter in the St Andrews State Park, Panama City, Florida. We liked it here so much a month ago that we went a little out of our way to visit again. It is right on the water, quiet and scenic, and has nice walking trails and plentiful wildlife.

Nov 17, 2012 - Panama City Beach, FL - 2012

Our stay at Panama City Beach has been with mixed feelings because it has been so cold. The day we arrived, Tues., it was pleasant. I am glad we went for a walk that day because it has been down hill from there. Wednesday morning we went for another nice walk, but that was about it. Thursday it rained and Friday, the sun never came out and it did not get above 56 degrees with a damp wind chill. Brrrrrr. And, to add insult to injury, today was beautiful....and we are leaving. That's all the complaining I will do today. Wednesday we met up...
