Oct 26, 2016 - A short drive to Panama City Beach and Mikes Past and Future

This entry is going to be a bit longer than most. We left Biloxi and headed east towards Panama City Beach on I-10 and eventually ended up at Emerald Beach RV resort. Very nice park and well maintained. Nice spots with plenty of space between rigs. We stopped here in Panama City Beach because of a discovery that Cynthia made while we were heading home this spring. While at the FMCA rally in Perry, Georgia and attending some of the seminars, Cynthia wound up taking a seminar on genealogy. With some of the information provided she was able to...

Apr 19, 2016 - Panama City Beach, FL

2016-04-19.Panama City Beach Finding an RV park in this area is difficult; not because of the availability but because of the cost and other limitations. We tried to stay in several of the state parks and in the National Seashore but there were length limits or pets were not allowed or, there wasn’t a space for us. So, we tried private parks but, in this area, especially the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area, the cost is outrageous. How does $136.00 per night sound for a campsite? Are you kidding me? So, we are in Panama City Beach in a...

Bayou Bound

Dec 27, 2015 - Our last 2 days

The day after Christmas we looked for a beach to walk. We mistakenly assumed this would be easy; we are on the coast, right? Yes and no. We were on the coast, but it is very built up and commercialized so finding public beach access was not that easy. We finally found access next to a burger king- lunch and a walk on the beach. How fortuitous! Anyway, we all enjoyed our walk and Don got to try out his new boat shoes. After a short rest at home we headed to the gulf side of our island for some sunset pictures. The beach here was kind of...

Dec 26, 2015 - St. Andrews Island State Park

This is a very pretty park situated between a bay and the gulf. Not terribly busy when we arrived but did fill up a bit for Christmas. We dedicated ourselves to being tourists and doing touristy things. That said, we hit the junk clothing and seashell stores and just generally cruised to see the area. We all agreed that a fine seafood dinner was what we would do for Christmas eve since we planned to cook at home for Christmas. Rowland was the designated driver for tbis outing. We started around 3:30ish with a guidebook in hand. The first...

Nov 20, 2015 - Day 12 - Ozark/Ft. Rucker Alabama to Panama City, Florida

Great day, both of us in shorts to start the day for the first time this trip. We were on the road by 8:20AM, clear, sunny and warm. We crossed into Florida at 9:30AM and stopped at a Welcome Center to get Florida camping guides, state park guides and maps. Got samples of fresh orange and grapefruit juices there as well. We got to St Andrews State Park, in Panama City, and were only able to get a site for one night, but got one very close to the same site we had last time we were there. We had to go into town to find a hardware store, sure...

May 4, 2015 - Suwannee River State Park, FL

The lovely Suwannee River meets the Santa Fe River in this lovely Florida park. It was a pretty stopover on our way East, and we got to see this landmark, made famous by Stephen Foster in his song "Old folks at Home." Methinks this river would be as obscure as the hundreds of other rivers we have crossed here in the South, if he had written 'way down upon the Tennessee River,' or 'way down upon the Chattahoochie River....' This is a serene spot, made more so because it is still the off-season. Things will definitely change after Memorial...

Apr 17, 2015 - Florida , Panama City Beach\St. Andrews

St. Andrews Park in Panama City was very crowded because of the popular location. Like most who were there, we took advantage of the beautiful white sandy beach every chance we got. After the muddy gulf waters of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, this pristine water and sparkling white powder-like sand was a thoroughly welcome change. As for birds, we saw nothing new except for a blue and white long-necked marsh bird that as of this writing, we have not yet identified. The last day we were there, it was cloudy and we spent a lazy day in...

Oct 25, 2014 - Panama City Beach, FL

We left AL and headed toward Key West where we will spend Thanksgiving. Due the distance, we had several stops planned on the way, the first being a nice RV park here. Unfortunately, while here, a leak started in our kitchen drain system….after discussion we decided to head to Tampa to get this fixed as a local repair man could not figure out how to get to the leak. On the way, we also developed a problem with one of the coach’s slide. It was a long drive, just because of the worry that the slide would open while driving.

Living Our Dream

May 14, 2014 - Gulf State Park, Day 7

We are glad that we decided to stay one more day here. It rained all day, well stormed part of the time. We had to put our awning down because of the wind. We spent a restful day reading, watching TV and listening to the rain. Tonight the rain is over and the prediction is for nice weather the rest of the week. We have decided not to go on any farther and to start back. We will leave tomorrow and have made reservations at Topsail which is a really nice park near Destin. Should be home by the weekend.

Days 2 and 3: St. Andrews State Park Decision Time After a good night’s sleep, [ we were both exhausted], we ,made the painful decision to cancel our trip west. I can’t deny that I am deeply disappointed by the decision having planned on this trip for so long but on the other hand, there are people in Michigan and Ohio who would give their eye teeth for the chance to explore Florida’s Emerald Coast and we are right here!! So I am making the conscious decision to have a good time anyway. I cancelled all of our reservations, Grand Canyon...

May 11, 2014 - Gulf State Park, Days 5 and 6

Day 5 Monday, May 12 Gulf State Park We had a very relaxing night’s sleep camped by the lake. The breeze, well wind actually, was wonderful and we slept with the windows open. I could see the stars and the moon from our skylight as I lay in bed. This morning it is cloudy and overcast again. We have decided to stay an additional day here until at least Wednesday to rest and enjoy the beach. This morning we are busy doing laundry. It is amazing how much laundry two people can accumulate. While waiting for our clothes to be done, I went up...
