Mar 28, 2013 - Panama City, FL

3/28/13, Thursday Another short hop today to Panama City, FL and the Tyndall Air Force Base FamCamp (Family Camp). But we made a few stops along the way. The jets were flying right overhead which was really neat....the sound of our freedom! Destin, FL is home to the Fort Benning Army Recreation Area which we had heard was really great so we stopped by for a look. Not our cup of tea. The rigs were packed in like sardines. On the Plus side though, the facilities were first class. It had a wonderful beach, play areas for the kids, swimming...

2013 USA Trip

Nov 12, 2012 - Panama City, FL

The drive to Panama City, Florida from Chiefland reminded me what a big state Florida is. Two days ago we left Tampa which I always think of as midway between north and south. We drove 4 hours to Chiefland which I think is in the middle of nowhere, then 5 hours to Panama City, Florida. We have had 4 travel days since leaving Key West and we are still in Florida, and we have another short travel day to go! We have been in Florida for more than 2 weeks now. The seacoast north of Tampa is called "Florida's Emerald Coast", a term that I first...

The Great Escape

Apr 19, 2012 - Panama City, FL (March 24-26, 2012)

After a wonderful stay with Spike and Claire, we loaded up Willie4 and headed further south, stopping at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City. We found a nice spot at their Raptor Ranch RV Park, on a Pearl Bayou which flows into the bay. On the list of military base rv parks, this one ranks up there -- large, treed sites, across from woods or water! So, we stayed for a few days. And, what we did was walk their short trails and played golf at Pelican Point Golf Course, the Tyndall base course. After not staying in our motor coach for...

Apr 8, 2012 - Tyndall AFB FL

We left Foley going East on Hwy 98 while Kay & Marlin drove the the NW to the Seattle Washington Area to workkamp for the summer. We really enjoyed the drive along the Gulf. Hwy 98 is a really great scenic drive. We spent three nights at the Family Camp on Tyndall AFB. We explored the area, ate some Apalachicola oyster at a small hole-in-the-wall oyster bar in Port-St.-Joe called Baileys. they were exquisite. We relaxed and had a great time watching the squirrels and listening to the F-15s flying overhead. the only down side was that the...

Mar 16, 2012 - Still on the Forgotten Coast

The day we left the Blakeney State Park near the Spanish Fort (just on the lake) marsh area across from Mobile, we scooted down to Fairhope. Jean & Chuckles enjoyed the great Park by the ocean while I hunted out the nifty spots downtown including Section Street (mostly antique shops)and the French Quarter - lots of balconies, petites boutiques et al. Wonderful! We both agree Fairhope along with Destin are now our favorite places! We were there only one afternoon and fell in love with the beauty of the town. Jean had easily driven the RV...

Voyage a Terre

Feb 22, 2012 - Florida Panhandle

Raining again today! Never has so much rain fallen 6 inches in 12 hours when were camping in Destin at St Andrews State Park - or is it because we are in north Florida - the Panhandle. Whatever! The whole coast is outstanding with white sugar sand and lofty dunes. Destin remains one of our favourite stop-overs and we return tomorrow from Pensacola to the Open Road RV garage/store to have the hydraulic pump fixed that was damaged in our attempts to extricate ourselves from a sink hole in a Dundee campground. Sure! When we buried the keel of...

Feb 15, 2012 - Mainland Florida: Jan & Feb

We have spent our first night on the Florida Panhandle at the Carrabelle Beach RV camp site; it's a very tidy & attractive place just across the highway from the Gulf. Since early January we have been visiting our friends wintering in mainland Florida all the way from horse ranches north west of Ocala with our Tidnish buddies, Ivan & Sylvia Gould, south to Port Charlotte where my brother, Locks, & wife Dixie, are spending 3 months. To begin our Fl adventure, we arrived at the Gould's winter home sick as dogs. Although Ivan & Sylvia met us...

Voyage a Terre

Mar 4, 2011 - St. Andrews, day 2

More of the same. Pretty much a repeat of yesterday, other than the drive. Spent a lot of the afternoon at the beach today, and tried not to get fried. Got my shorts wet a couple times from the waves, but the water is much warmer than the Pacific, so wasn’t too much of a shock. Today, I walked out on the fishing pier to take a few shots up and down the coast. I have to presume that all of the larger condos/motels up the coast are along the Panama City Beach. Otherwise, the pier from which the pictures were taken is pretty close to the...

Mar 3, 2011 - St. Andrews State Park

A little drive up the coast This time I wanted to try the coastal route up through Florida, since I’ve not ever seen the west of Coast of Florida. So, my route followed Hwy 19 from Old Town up to Perry, where Hwy 98 veered off to the west. It finally caught up with the coast about in the crook of the panhandle, just below Panacea. From that point on it pretty much followed the coast line, other than going through Tyndall Air Force Base. It was really nice taking the secondary roads, as I got to see more of the countryside, and less...

May 19, 2010 - Florida panhandle

We headed for the coastal route, Highway 98, so we could see the Gulf communities with the white sandy beaches. We saw some intercoastal waterways, some beaches, some pine forests and palmettos. We saw some lovely southern homes and tall condos on the Gulf islands. We settled in at the Panama City Elks Lodge which is next door to the marina and the City Hall. The Elks Lodge has its own beach which we just had to try out. There was no signs of oil yet but they were worried. The water looked a little brown near the shore but we were told that...

May 17, 2010 - Visit with Angie

We arrived on Monday afternoon in time to pick up Lulu, Lila and Miles from school. It was so great to have Lulu run into my arms and give me a great big hug. We had a wonderful time swimming, playing and just hanging out with Angie and the kids. Jay was in Germany fulfilling his reserve duty so we didn't get a chance to see him. One day we took a ride down on the bayfront and saw the preparations that were being made for the oil slick that could be coming their way. The pictures don't really show what was going on -- the booms were piled...

Mar 16, 2010 - Tyndall AFB, FL

We are on the road again to Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Fl. We didn't do much here. This was mainly a stop over to relax for a couple days. We took a drive along the Panama Beach coastline. Carol was so impressed with the beautiful beach homes. Carol enjoys seeing these different houses as we travel. I wonder if she's trying to tell me something.??!! (gene) Ooops! HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, DARENN & DARELL! GOD'S PROMISE FOR TODAY: MERCY "Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever." (1Chronicles 16:34)
