Sep 7, 2020 - Day 11 - Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, Orlando, FL

LJ and I have another close encounter on our sunrise stroll. This time it's an inquisitive donkey who saunters over as we pass by the teaching farm that is part of the park. I've seen a couple of horses at this farm; this is the first time I've seen the donkey. I'm sure this guy is expecting a handout, but we've got nothing to offer. Just as with the Shetland ponies at the park in Texas, LJ stares through the fence for a minute or two, and then starts barking and trying to get through the fence. It's time to go. Shelli and her clan show up...

Sep 6, 2020 - Day 10 - Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, Orlando, FL

It's supposed to be a nice, quiet recovery Sunday morning after a long and busy Saturday. Only somebody didn't get the memo - the dog. LJ is up again at first light. I am able to delay him a bit with some stern warnings, but resistance is futile and we're out of the RV by 7am. It seems cooler and less humid this morning; actually quite comfortable for a change. We're greeted right outside the campground with something unexpected. At first I think it's two great herons, but upon closer observation (and a quick check with Google), it's a...

Sep 5, 2020 - Day 9 - Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, Orlando, FL

We've got a long day ahead of us, and most of it will be spent away from the RV, so I take LJ on an extended walk this morning. Hopefully he'll get worn out and sleep while we're away. I give him the lead and he takes me to the nature walk part of the park. This is the area that we had the close encounter with the very hungry, very aggressive coyote two years ago. The only thing we encounter this time is a pair of older hikers (they probably said the same thing about me). By the time we get back to the RV, LJ is ready for a break and I have...

Sep 4, 2020 - Day 8 - Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, Orlando, FL

It's the first non-travel day since we left home. For teacher Shelli and the grandkids it's another school day, so we decide to pick up her husband and make a Costco run. Apparently everyone in Orlando that doesn't have the virus has the same idea. The huge mall that Costco resides in is swamped with vehicles. It doesn't help that there's all kinds of construction going on or that Jim makes a wrong turn. But we finally arrive, restock the water and wine stock, drop everything back at their hotel room, and head for lunch. We settle on a...

Sep 3, 2020 - Day 7 - Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, Orlando, FL

Having crossed three time zones in six days, we're still struggling with our sleep cycles. It's after 8am before any of us (including the dog) begin to stir. But since today's drive is less than three hours total and the Orlando campground has a 1pm check-in time, it's no big deal. LJ and I take in a leisurely stroll of the campground. It's clearly been there a long time. The site pads and facilities are a little run down, but they've added a bunch of brand new wooden picnic tables and the ramp down to the boat dock is brand new. They must...

Mar 6, 2020 - Gatorland

Long before Walt Disney made Orlando a tourist mecca, small tourist traps in Florida were luring travelers to stop and see gee gaws made out of sea shells and shellacked alligator heads. Gatorland has been in existence since 1949 and is this sort of place, a place we would never deign to visit. But last year the photography club at our campground visited Gatorland and participants raved about what a great destination it was for nature photography. While the park doesn't open until 10am, it offers photographers special access at 7am on some...

Oct 8, 2019 - Orlando, Florida

. Driving the 50 miles from the RV park in Titusville to Orlando would seem like an easy, no stress, drive. It is, until you get about 10 miles from Orlando, when suddenly you are in the middle of chaos, new construction, hairpin turns, exits, on ramps, your two year old GPS is telling you that you're going the wrong way and a front-end collision is in your future. . The freeway system around Orlando was a mess, with new construction, and confusing turns and exits, especially if you are driving a 30 foot motorhome and towing a car behind...

Apr 15, 2019 - Ready,Set,Go!!!

We are packed, showered, hydrated, in our comfy clothes, ready for the van to arrive and take us to the airport. D has money stashed in so many places he could put a squirrel to shame. We have been doctored, prescribed to, tested, and inoculated. Our suitcases are under fifty pounds but my purse weighs twenty. D has 35 crossword puzzles cut from the newspaper to do with his coffee every morning. He has made his final shoe choices. 10 audio books loaded, 15 unread books on my kindle, 2 movies downloaded on my I-pad, and a phone that will NOT...

Today's the day for Universal Resort Orlando. Lots of things we want to see, and not a lot of time to see them. When we were planning this trip, we bought a book called "The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando". It was very helpful in guiding your planning and giving us helpful tips. It also gave us a web site address and mobile app for planning and guiding us at the park. I used the mobile app (for a small fee) and listed all of the attractions we wanted to see. The app then arranges the attractions for the most efficient and best times...

Feb 24, 2019 - fly to Buenos Aries via Atlanta

Step One: Our friend Charlies gave us a ride from the campground the airport. Much appreciated. No traffic delays today. It was a bit jarring to see the lobby where a TSA agent leapt to his death from a balcony a few weeks ago. If the TSA agents were thinking about that or their delayed wages after the government shut-down, they did not let on. In the pre-Check line things moved fast and we rejoiced in keeping our shoes on and computer bags shut. Usually one of us gets nailed for our technology, but we must have looked trustworthy today....

Feb 20, 2019 - FMCA, Valentine, Cummins

We've been in all kinds of weather this month. Hot, humid, cold, sunny, cloudy and rainy. Luckily it was clear for our outdoor Superbowl party that utilizes a big projector screen. Headed to Jacksonville to visit the Mayo Clinic. Just regular check up for Mary. Also went to a Family Motor Coach Assoc (FMCA) rally about an hour down the road. Went with 4 other friends and enjoyed seminars on Alaska caravans, saw vendors, and entertained by singers and impressionists. Mary went to a craft class and decorated a wine bottle. And, we won the...
