Jan 14, 2017 - Bluegrass - Geocaching And Fun Time

We went over to Okeechobee , Florida for some bluegrass music and to do some geocaching, we did both !!!! I was looking for a cache container in a small park and found that the container was up in a tree. I do not climb up in tree any more since I turned seventy one years old. But I will use a ladder some times !!!! I got up in the tree to end up getting a twig stuck in my nose and because I'm on blood thinners , my nose bleed like I was going to pour out a gallon of blood. So Norma had to go up in the tree to get the cache container. We...

Jan 6, 2016 - Day 59 - in Okeechobee, Florida

Today we drove down the west side of the lake a little ways. We found a park on the inside of the dyke just past the turn into town. We found that the whole way was RV Park after RV Park, most were old trailers and park model homes and a few RV's and most were pretty run-down but a few nice looking places. A large one was named the Big O Resort had a golf course as well. Several parks have golf courses, including the KOA in town, and almost all are situated on canals with access to the lake. Even one small town we went through was all...

Jan 5, 2016 - Day 58 - in Okechobee, Florida

As we still haven't actually seen Lake Okeechobee yet, we decide to drive down the east side of it. Just outside town we saw a sign to Lake Nature Trail and checked it out. There is a dyke around the lake, and there are locks for boats to get in and out, and places where they regulate the water levels in the lake. Around the top of the dyke is a trail for walking, biking, or horseback riding. We continued down the east side to Port Mayaca and again checked the dyke trail. A sign there told us that the trail runs all around the lake, about...

Jan 4, 2016 - Day 57 - to Okeechobee, Florida

We decided to head inland to check out the large lake in the middle of the state. We know from other places that the water from this lake services all of southern Florida. We made reservations at Zachary Taylor RV Park, right on a river feeding into the lake. It is at the northern end of Lake Okeechobee in the town of Okeechobee. We arrived and we escorted to our site 127, a wide spot on a corner. It is all grass with a hill at the back end and a palm tree to avoid on the way in. The park employee directed Garry into the site with some...

Jan 13, 2014 - Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

We left Lithia Spring to drive over to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park just north of lake okeechobee and the town of Okeechobee, Florida. The park is in miles and miles of open prairie land and right in the middle of this is a hammock of woods where the campground is to be found. We went out the next day to do some geocaching in the rain and then stopped at our first find of the day at a gas station, it was the only station with in 35 miles of the state park. The owner had taken parts from one pump to run the other gas pump, as gary...

GEOCACHING 2014

Jan 8, 2014 - Lake Okeechobee

Tuesday was a very cold and windy day here in Florida. We figured it would be a good day for a Jeep exploration. We decided to take a tour around Lake Okeechobee, the largest lake in Florida. This lake is 930 square MILES big! That's huge! However it averages only 9 feet deep. Still, that's a lot of water. We decided to circle the lake clockwise so I could get some good shots with the camera. Well, the joke was on me. In the 1920's there were 2 hurricanes in this area and the lake flooded and killed 2500 people. Herbert Hoover approved the...

Apr 4, 2013 - Delinquent Author

Well, I certainly have been delinquent in updating the blog. However, life here has settled into a very pleasant routine--with not too much to distinguish one day from the next. March certainly did not not exhibit the kind of weather that is common for FL. We had quite a few cool spells--some downright cold with overnight temperatures in the 40s. We went over to Venice again this year to try to dig up shark teeth on the beach, but the day was cloudy, cool, and very windy. We were not able to get out into the water far enough to catch enough...

Mar 4, 2013 - Cold Weather and Creativity

Wow, it's been chilly lately! The last few days have been downright cold at night--enough so that I covered our lovely potted flowers last night--and the days have been in the 60s and low 70s. Waaaaaaaaaaa Waaaaaaaaaaaaa I know it's in the 20s and 30s at home, so I won't whine too much. It's going to be a bit warmer tomorrow and by next week, we'll be back on the FL track again--70s and 80s. We completed a great project today by creating a display incorporating the large replica bass that we bought with grasses and stones and a few replica...

Feb 28, 2013 - 10-Day Update

The good weather and good times continue here in (mostly) sunny FL. Although the days go by very quickly, and we seem to be busy all the time--it's really difficult to say exactly what new and exciting things we've been doing. The guys have been fishing nearly every day, except that Tom came down with an awful cold with chest congestion, which put a damper on his fishing. A few days ago, Tom and Robin went into Okeechobee to a clinic staffed by doctors to get some help. After two shots and several prescriptions, Tom felt much better and was...

Feb 27, 2013 - Silver Palms RV

Tonight we are at Silver Palms RV Park at the north end of Lake Okeechobee. It is directly across the road from the KOA park that we have stayed at in the past. This park is under new ownership and is a combination of owner sites and rental sites. All of the owner sites have interlock driveways and patios, while the rental sites have a 10 foot by 20 foot interlock patio and the rest is grass. The sites are about 40 feet wide, which is very spacious in the RV park industry. I've got some pictures to add, when I get to a place with better...

Feb 17, 2013 - Miscellaneous Days

The last few days have included driving and continuous rain on Thursday, with scattered showers on Friday. The rain was greatly needed, so I guess we can give up a few sunny days for the good of the cause. The storm brought cold weather behind it—-with low temps overnight in the high 30s. Tonight is supposed to be even colder. We protected our newly planted flowers and flowering bushes with blankets, The last few days have included driving and continuous rain on Thursday, with scattered showers on Friday.
