Oct 23, 2017 - Everglades and Florida Keys

We had a cool quiet evening. Got going about 8 after we fixed a little breakfast. We were following our GPS and she took us thru the agricultural and rural development zones. Some of what we saw last night but thousands of acres more. They had all kinds plants in various stages. Cactus, orchids, bushes, crops, palm trees and many we did not know what were. We went to the Ernest Coe Visitor center, one of many in Everglades National Park. The picture of the alligator is right out the center door, below the boardwalk. The park is at the...

Nov 25, 2016 - Turner River Paddle

There were only 5 of us who drove for an hour and a half to this creek to paddle among mangroves, alligators, invasive hydrofoil (or something), lilies, and bromeliads. This paddle had us on the water for more than 4 hours, even for lunch! When I got out, I almost thought I was going to fall because my legs were wobbly! My butt and left upper arm are sore - can't imagine how I'll feel tomorrow! But look at the pictures to see the beauty of the day.

Mar 2, 2016 - Big Cyprus National Preserve

After several days at the Seminole Indian casino in Immokalee, we headed South to catch Highway 41, known as the Tamiami Trail, destination Midway Campground in the Big Cyprus National Preserve. There are several other campgrounds maintained by the Department of Interior, but most do not have electricity, water, or sewer. Midway does, but we learned after arriving that the remote location prevents any cell phone or internet service. Our only complaint about this park that honors our Senior Pass for $15 a night. To get here, I drove right...

Dec 4, 2015 - Day 26 - Estero to Ochopee, Florida

We had a challenge getting out of our site this morning, due to the rains that we have had. Garry needed to shuffle the bus a little to the right to be sure that he could crank left out of the site without scratching the roof on overhanging trees. The ground was soft to start with, and after the rain, quite greasy. He sank quite a bit and left some deep ruts for the park host to repair behind us. Garry pulled us out in one move, tires spinning, but no trees got in the way. We got through the dump station and on the road by 9:00 AM. There is...

Dec 30, 2014 - Everglades

Wow, alligators! We are staying at Midway Campground, which is directly in the middle of Miami and Naples. The campground has about 20 campsites around a small pond, which is also a breeding ground for the mosquitoes that come out at night! Lack of cell phone reception also adds to our experience. We are spending New Years Eve in Miami and going to see the band Phish. We are also going to travel to Naples to get some beach time in! We are about an hour away from each. We have seen so much wildlife...numerous birds, alligators, turtles, and...

Feb 29, 2012 - Drove the Tamiami Trail

Tuesday, February 28, 2012 What a nice week we had. Just keeps getting nicer and nicer weatherwise tho we have seen some clouds here and there and actually had a little sprinkle a time or 2. We went out on a night hike on the Anhinga Trail, which was the mostly boardwalk trail that had lots of critters along it. It was another gorgeous nite. We wore long pants in case the bugs were out. Whoa did that feel weird, havin long pants on. Gator eyes glow bright beady red when a light hits them. Spooky. A bunch of them were out and several birds...

Feb 15, 2012 - Geocaching In The Everglades

Today would be a nice day for a drive out to the Everglades, we have not been out this way for over forty years. The first thing you see is that the area has grown from nothing to houses, homes, buildings and man made things. You can now camp at a few campgrounds in the area and get to see the real Everglades, take a few days to see the wild. As a young man in florida I did not look twice at the glades, now I can take the time to see things that I would not give a second glance. Pine Hammock Meeting place was where the governor and the...

Mar 26, 2011 - Everglades wildlife

Today I went with Laurie and Jeanne to the Florida Panther National Wildlife Preserve which is just off I-75 at the exit with State Route 29. There are two trails there, totaling 1.6 miles. The morning was very foggy and it was lifting as we got there. That made it sound like it was raining softly at the beginning of our walk. While we didn't see a panther, we did see a red-bellied woodpecker, a yellow warbler,4 deer, a red-shouldered hawk, and I almost stepped on a skinny ribbon snake! When we were finished, we went down Route 29 and...

Feb 18, 2011 - Biscayne Nat'l Park & Big Cypress Preserve

From Florida City, FL … Friday, February 18, 2011 We were pretty tired by the time we returned to our motel in Florida City last night. But the coffee we had with our key lime pie helped us stay up until midnight. : ) Friday morning we got up and packed our bags. We pulled out of our motel around 8:30am. First on our agenda for today was a quick trip to Biscayne National Park. This Park is only about 10 miles from our motel and only 8 miles from Highway 1. Over 90 percent of Biscayne National Park is underwater, so to experience it to its...

Nov 19, 1994 - A weekend in the Everglades

November 19, 1994 Saturday What a wet place - & not rain either. We got up & all the windows were covered with dew. The sun was out & it looked like what promised to be a great day! We had coffee & Jane did some cleaning while Ted checked out the fishing & metal detecting situation. We were soon both fishing with very little action. We changed ponds & the only luck we had was that two alligators were interested in our bobbers. We went back to the first pond & Jane started getting bites in a certain area. It ended up that Ted caught a...
