Dec 13, 2012 - Palm trees and salt water

Thursday, December 13, 2012 Sea level and sunshine, palm trees and palmettos. We have finally arrived. Yup, we snuck into the state again without getting caught. Of course it was cloudy when we arrived but the sun shone this morning for a good couple hours anyway. And we are not actually on the ocean but on Choctawhatchee Bay (say that 3 times fast) which opens to the Gulf at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park. It’s a nice park, pretty quiet for Florida. Maybe it is kinda quiet cause this morning there were a whole bunch of explosions,...

Aug 27, 2011 - Niceville FL

Today started off with no plan, but that changed at about 10:30. My best friend from high school, conveniently also named Larry, retired from the USAF and has been working for Pratt-Whitney here at Eglin AFB for the last few years. He lives about 20 minutes from here so I took a shot and did a little internet searching and found his home number and gave him a call and asked if he and his wife were available to meet for a little while today. Surprisingly, they were, so we met them for lunch just down the road from the campground. Then they...

Aug 26, 2011 - Niceville FL

We left Big Oak RV Park at about 10:30 with the lovely wife at the wheel – yep, it was her turn to put some miles on the bus including some city-traffic type driving. She did fine – she hit nothing and nothing hit us so we’ll call that a success. After about 2½ hours on the road; with one quick pit stop, we got into the campground at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park in Niceville FL near Destin at about 1:30 Central time. Just in case you’re wondering, it is a mere 101° at press time. Really pleasant if you’re a lizard somewhere in the...

May 14, 2011 - Niceville, Florida

5/15 – 5/19 Another two days brought us 162 miles to Niceville, Florida (SR65, US98, US331, SR20). It was a beautiful drive, some of which was along the Gulf of Mexico and a number of bays. We stopped for the first night at the Visitor Center in Grayton Beach, Florida. For three nights we stayed at Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park. This is another beautiful park which was exceptionally well kept up. There were three trails in this park and they were immaculate. We were in the Niceville area to visit Ken’s brother Gary and Gary’s wife...

Aug 10, 2009 - Meeting Rita In Niceville

We got an early start out of Lake City.. On the way to Niceville we passed part of a NASA space module. The main reason for staying in Niceville was to meet Rita. Five or six years ago when I got serious about losing a few pounds I joined an internet weight loss program. That is where I first became acquainted with Rita. We became ’weigh loss buddies’ . We both gave up on the internet program but remained in contact by email vowing one day to meet in person. OUR CAMPSITE WAS ON THE CHOCTAWATCHEE BAY. This bay is so long you cannot see from...

Oct 29, 2008 - Niceville, FL.

Arrived at Maxwell AFB (Montgomery, AL.) recreation area & RV park in Niceville, Florida. It's immediately on the Gulf positioned on the main Florida coast, right across from the island that Destin, Fl. lays on. It's in a classic southern, coastal oak forest. Our RV site is 50' from the water, just beautiful. We stayed here and just vegged out for 3 days. Eglin AFB was only about 15 minutes away. Nice looking USAF golf course, 5 minutes away, but didn't play. Too busy relaxing.

Apr 13, 2008 - The Plan

We are planning a two-month trip to the West Coast. While our primary goals are California, Oregon and Washington, we will also enjoy many sites along the way. I (Chap) drive the bus. She (Peg) is the trip planner/navigator. I am very fortunate that she is planning and navigating. Planning: Not my cup of tea. Peg really gets into it and does a great job of it. As of this writing, she has bought every book that Amazon.com has regarding traveling throughout our target states. She is researching where to go and what to see. Navigating: I can’t...

Jan 15, 2008 - Our First Destination.... in Florida

Hi Everyone, We spent last night in Montgomery Alabama at an overnight campground. Got up and continued our journey another 160 miles to Florida. While in Alabama, we passed cotton fields with the cotton still on the plant waiting to be picked. I had never seen that. We arrived at our campsite around 12:30pm and quickly got started making it home for the next few days. So far we have had good luck with our travels (knock on wood) However, after we arrived at the campground, Jack decided to unload the Harley only to find that the battery...
