Jan 15, 2017 - Ortona South COE Campground

. Hazel and I left Orlando after lunch on December 28th, and drove the 120 miles to Lake Placid, arriving mid-afternoon, pulling right into our friend's driveway to spend 4 nights. Dave and Helen were our backyard neighbors in International Falls, Minnesota for nearly 10 years, they spend summers in the Falls, winters in Lake Placid. . By logging on to the Corps of Engineers section of www.reservations.gov I was able to find cancelled reservations for several days at the Ortona South COE RV park 10 miles East of LaBelle, Florida on the...

Feb 19, 2016 - Ortona South Campground - Lake Okeechobee Waterway

Hello Everyone, Today we visited Ortona South Campground which is just south east of Lake Okeechobee, FL. Here we met up with several of our good Truck Camping friends and had a great time! Lake Okeechobee, being Florida's largest lake, is almost overflowing from all the rain recently so the Army Corps of Engineers has opened all the Dam spillways to allow lots of water to flow out! This campground is right on one of those spillways, and a set of Locks, and we saw lots of action! To see all the action, click on the following...

Dec 8, 2015 - Lake Okeechobee

The Okeechobee Waterway is a man-made waterway stretching across Florida from Fort Myers on the west coast to Stuart on the east coast of Florida. The waterway runs through Lake Okeechobee and consists of the Caloosahatchee River to the west of the lake and the St. Lucie Canal east of the lake. As with most man-made waterways, there are a series of locks to raise and lower the river levels for the various vessels that come through. The Army Corps of Engineers (God bless those guys!) built a campground at the Ortona lock and dam which is...

Feb 10, 2015 - Okeechobee Crossing

The eastern end of this cross-Florida waterway starts at Stuart. And, Stuart is often a cause for caution. Most boaters have little knowledge of seamanship, all are in a hurry, careening around with obnoxious wakes and some actually get into dangerous situations. This latter was the case when we entered the Roosevelt Bridge restricted area as the third trawler with a 2 knot current on our tails. An impatient bowrider tried to insert herself right in front of us in the breach. We were all lucky and in spite of the bridge tender's strong...

Feb 3, 2015 - Moore Haven, FL

Efforts to find a campground with 3 available sites near the coast are proving fruitless. It seems there are a lot more people here this Winter. I suspect the low price of fuel and the endless snow and bitter cold last year have something to do with it. This year, the cold has extended all the way down here to Florida, but so far, we've managed to avoid it. So, heading East from Ruskin, we'll try our luck on the East Coast. We head East on FL-70 to US-27 where we turn South to FL-78 and North Lake Estates RV Resort. 139 miles on this leg....

Apr 23, 2014 - Camping Again!

From Ortona South Lock Campground near LaBelle, FL ... Wednesday, April 23, 2014 This past weekend we had a "hopeful" lead on selling our RV fall through. We were very disappointed especially since we had hoped to sell it before heading north again. So we decided we may as well go camping! We checked availability at Ortona Lock online, and we had lots of choices as long as we stayed during the week and out by the weekend. We planned to leave on Monday, but by the time we ran the rest of our errands trying to get ready to leave, it was...

On the Road Again

Feb 22, 2011 - The Glades RV Resort, Moore Haven, FL

Didn't go for a walk this morning because my walking clothes were dirty. It was very foggy in the morning. Spent most of the day researching cruise options for late March. Gary came by on his motorcycle to deliver the part that he fixed for Larry's trailer. Went to the pool for about an hour in the afternoon. Grilled steak for dinner, with baked potatoes and broccoli. But not before Dan tipped the grill over and we had to reassemble it before we could cook.

2011 Snowbird Flight

Feb 21, 2011 - The Glades RV Resort, Moore Haven, FL

Went for a 3.3-mile walk/jog in the morning through the park and up the road from the office to the marina. Encountered Logan, the golden retriever, and his mom, Theo, along the way. Finished reading the Patrick Smith book(s) that Marion loaned me. Very good story about the Seminole Indians and how the white man pushed them out of their homes in the Everglades. Hors d'oeuvres and snacks at The Love Shack (looking at the stars with Larry's iPad). Leftover pork steaks for dinner.

Jan 13, 2011 - America's Sweetest Town

From Ortona Lock COE Campground in LaBelle, FL … Thursday, January 13, 2011 We had a cold front that moved in the past couple of days. It has only been around 60 both yesterday and today. In fact, last night it got down to freezing, so Charlie had to unhook our water hose outside. During the night we used the water from our fresh water tank inside. When we got up this morning it was 37 degrees. The cold temperatures certainly threatened the vegetable and fruit crops in this part of the state. The news showed hundreds of people who showed...

Jan 11, 2011 - Seeing a dr. on the road

From Ortona Lock COE Campground in LaBelle, FL … Tuesday, January 11, 2011 Yesterday we took Charlie to a health center in La Belle. He just went as a walk in, and it took three hours for him to see a doctor. But we were glad when the doctor confirmed that he has a strained muscle in his back and prescribed muscle relaxers. He is feeling some better now but looks forward to getting back to normal. This was our first experience with having to see a doctor while on the road, and it went just fine. First Charlie checked the internet to find...

Jan 9, 2011 - Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest

From Ortona Lock COE Campground in LaBelle, FL … Sunday, January 9, 2011 Today’s weather was a bit warmer and less windy. It was a very nice day in the low 70s. On Thursday or Friday (I lose track of time around here), a very nice couple named Don and Pat moved into the park across the road from us. They also have a Cougar RV, so they immediately struck up a conversation with us. Don and Pat who live near Delray Beach, FL, are really friendly and interesting to talk to. Unfortunately, they were only here for a long weekend. This morning...

Jan 8, 2011 - Just Taking it Easy

From Ortona Lock COE Campground in LaBelle, FL … Saturday, January 8, 2011 We have spent the last couple days just hanging around the park. Relaxing and letting Charlie rest his back. If he’s not much better by Monday, we will probably take him to a doctor to take a look at it. Yesterday morning I did go into LaBelle for a few hours. While there I did our laundry at one of the local Laundromats. I also went by the grocery store to pick up a few things, checked out a gift shop, and picked up a pizza to bring back with me. While I was out,...
