Feb 16, 2016 - February 15th

February 15th Today we woke up and got things put away for travel. We left the campsite at Flamingo in the everglades about 9:30 and got to our new campground at Midway on the Tamiami Trail about 12:30. Although the traffic wasn't bad there was some construction going on. All in all the trip wasn't bad. As it's name indicates, Midway is about half way between Tampa and Miami. We're still in the boondocks but a little better than Flamingo. We have sporadic phone reception and do receive several TV stations. The TV stations do however...

We made it to Midway campground today. We drove the Loop Road. We saw lots of alligators, fish, and a 2 ft snake. The frog we saw at Lake Montgomery managed to make it's way inside the motorhome. Sally found it and I was able to grab it and toss it outside. Of course it urinated as I was holding it getting ready to toss it. Oh well what is, is what is.

January 16th Today we broke camp at the Flamingo campground in the Everglades. As we drove out of the Everglades we got on rt. 997 or Krome Ave. We took the Tamiami Trail to the Midway campground located halfway between the east and west coast. The campground is small about 30 sites in the whole campground. There is a pond in the middle of the campground, with campsites all the way around. There is at least one 5 foot alligator in the pond. We didn’t do much else today, other than drive up here. We just sat around.

January 17th We had another good weather day today. High in the upper 70s low around 60. We took the truck to the start of the loop road and started the loop drive. There is a canal next to the road and there are many alligators and wading birds to be seen there. We drove about 4-5 moles and found the road was closed at that point. We came back out of the loop road and went to the visitor canter on Rt 41, the Tamiami Trail. There ar many alligators in the canal near the visitor center. We watched a movie about the Big Cypress Swamp. When...

January 18th We had a big day today. First we went up Rt 41 from our Midway campground to Birdon Rd. We traveled that and several other roads for at total of 40-45 miles, all of it was dirt and gravel. The pickup is very dirty now. Along side of the road in most places there was a canal. In the canal there were many alligators and a large number of wading birds of many verities. We stopped at the end of the dirt road at a small road side park and ate. We then returned to our campground where we found that a person had driven his car into...

January 20th Oh my a big day today, hope I don’t forget too much. We started the day around 7:30. Ate breakfast and headed East to a place called Shark Valey. There are no sharks there but that is what it is called. We have been there in the past and knew pretty much what to expect. There is a short walking path that we have taken in the past, that is loaded with alligators, turtles, and wading birds. We took the bikes this time and road 7 miles into the swamp alongside a borrow pit that was loaded with alligators wading birds, turtles,...

January 21st Another good day weather wise. The high was in the upper 70s, mostly sunny. We went into Naples today I was at McDonalds updating the blog on their Wifi. Sally went to the laundromat. She washed the truck too. It is a long way from the campsite to Naples, about 50 miles, one way. We returned to camp around 3:30. I did a little worm fishing in the camp pond and caught a couple of Oscars. A fish I have never caught before. Sally did her usual walk around the camp road for about ½ an hour. Our camp neighbors are from Hawaii and...

Jan 24, 2012 - January 22nd

January 22nd We drove to the Fakahatchee preserve state park to the West of Big Cypress. We drove the Janes Scenic Drive. This was a dirt road that was mostly kept in good condition. We drove as far as the road was open. This area has more Trees than either the Everglades or Big Cypress. Because of the trees we didn’t see many animals. A few large birds and a few alligators. We then drove to Everglades City and looked from the car. Next we returned to our campsite. I went fishing for a while catching what I think was a Oscar and several...
