Jan 3, 2014 - Fort Lauderdale

Thursday 2 January Fort Lauderdale We both slept remarkably well and got up at half seven feeling reasonably refreshed. I was surprised that the jet lag wasn't that bad. John was quite chirpy and seems to have got rid of his worst cold symptoms. We also hunted for John's specs but to no avail. We reported the loss to hotel reception and security and then phoned the transfer company in case he left it in the car last night. Eventually I suppose he'll have to check with the airlines. Before breakfast we looked into reception to see about our...

Jan 1, 2014 - Arrival at Fort Lauderdale

The flight didn't leave until 11.45pm which was was nearly 45 minutes late but at least we were comfortable. There's always concern about late departures causing problems with getting later flights. Still we had quite a lot of time to deal with things at LAX so we weren't worried. Our seats were comfortable on the plane and it was a real bonus having the ability to lie out flat in the seat, which converted to a full length bed at the press of a button when it came time to sleep. That has spoiled us for travelling cattle class on long...

Dec 20, 2013 - Miami, Florida

Days 290 - 291 of The Big Trip December 19 - The goal was to be on the road, at a reasonable hour, because we had almost 200 miles to drive. That didn't happen, because we had a jack that wouldn't come up and it took several efforts to finally get it to stow. We left just at 11:00am, so we made the check-out time. There are two rules(?) we usually follow. We try to avoid interstate highways and we usually avoid toll roads. On this day, we did both. With our late start, we decided we needed to make time, so started out on I-95. About an...

Dec 16, 2013 - It's finally here!

There will be at least one entry. Packed and ready to go after running around gathering and shedding "stuff"; still have more than I'd like but if it fits it goes. With three cameras I barely know how to operate but weigh a bloody ton, it should be interesting.

Dec 6, 2013 - December in Florida

As usual, I'm off to Florida for the holidays. I flew from Guayaquil to Panama to Miami. My travels will take me to Pembroke Pines, Fort Myers, and Sarasota to visit friends and see my family. This weekend I visited Barb DiGirolamo Riley in Pembroke Pines. We have been friends since grade school in Cicero, Illinois. Barb is a clothes horse and showed me some of her new purchases. On Sunday she planned a card party which included her mother Betty, her daughter Charlotte, Vicky Newson who is also from Cicero, and me.

2013 In Ecuador

Nov 23, 2013 - Miami

Leuke sightseeing tour gemaakt met de hop on and hop off bus.

Sep 30, 2013 - Jacksonville, Ormond Beach, Patrick AFB, Ft Lauderdale & Miami (photos)

After sleeping in different Truck Stops along Interstate 75, we arrived at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station’s FamCamp without any problems. We only planned to be here for a few days with at least one of those days to visit Saint Augustine. I didn’t know at the time that almost everything worth seeing in St Augustine closes by 5PM and there was no way to see all the important “stuff” in just one day. So, we ended up making it a two day trip. As usual, we took the bus tour ride around town where a driver/guide explained the highlights of...

May 22, 2013 - Finally home

Wednesday, May 22nd -- We touched down at about 00:30 on Wednesday. When we left Kona on Monday night we were not expecting our midnight arrival to be in 80F temperatures. After a stop for milk we were home at last at 1:30. 30 minutes later we were in our own bed. It was good to be horizontal finally, with the warm night air drifting through the window. I missed snorkeling already.

May 7, 2013 - Miami

On our way to the Miami area we spent one night along the way at a campground near Lake Okeechobee. It was outside of a tiny town called Moore Haven. This part of Florida is the agriculture section. Lots of cattle, citrus groves and new to us, sugar cane. Acres and acres of the stuff, in all stages of growth from seedlings to what looked like it was ready to be cut. Another thing that rural Florida has are Love Bugs. What an awful bug! There were clouds of them that we drove through. We started to see them around Bushnell but on the way to...
