Feb 23, 2017 - meet the group

It rained more yesterday than the entire time we have been in Florida. There were no storms, just incessant showers about three inches total. It was a good day to pack. We glanced out to see Wiseowl; it was a huddled pile of feathers over a boney frame. Sad! When we saw it again this morning, the rain had removed many of the downy feathers and he looked like a real owl. Kind of a Pinocchio story. The nest it sits in with mom is festooned with resurrection ferns. True to their name they had changed from crumbled yellow to a vibrant green...

Feb 18, 2017 - Miami and Everglades, then Fort Lauderdale

The cruise ship was already in port when I go up this am, well before 7 am. We had signed up for an Everglades Tour with shuttle back to the airport, so after breakfast, we went to the Amber Palace to gather for our excursion. The Everglades tour was awesome. We went out in an airboat and saw lots and lots of alligators. Afterwards there was a show where the man stood alongside huge gators. He said they are not aggressive. They like birds, small rodents, etc. He put a stick in the center of one's mouth and it did not close. When he touched...

Feb 11, 2017 - Back to Miami and beginning of Western Carribean Cruise

We came into the Port of Miami first thing this am. We had to go to the Amber Palace Lounge around 10/ They gave us a new key and walked us down through customs. There were lots of people doing back to back cruises. We were allowed to go in and out of out room as we wanted after that, even though they were making up the rooms for the new guests. We sailed away at 4 pm.

Feb 5, 2017 - Sea day

Today was a sea day. We had a nice day. hot tubs not very hot (and continued to be cool the rest of this week. This was Super Bowl Sunday, so Jim watched the game on the big screen TV on the Lido deck. We heard later that they also had it in some of the bars, and included some snacks. I went to the Punchliner Comedy Club and saw Tony Esposito. It was fairly funny.

Today we set sail from Port of Miami. We took the free hotel shuttle to the airport and then caught the shuttle that we paid for, to the Cruise Terminal. We were in room 9283 on the Lido deck on Carnival Glory (balcony). We had the anytime dining which is the one we prefer.

Dec 26, 2016 - Shark Valley

Over the holidays, Sandy and I headed to sunny south Florida for a week in the Everglades. We left RDU around 630 on Christmas and flew to Miami. We arrived around 9 and stayed for the first night at an Extended Stay America next to the airport, not the greatest hotel, but good enough for just the evening. Monday morning, we checked out and headed west along US-41, the Tamiami Trail. Along the way, I was just amazed at the wildlife we saw in the canal running parallel to the highway – alligators, herons, kingfishers and our first anhinga...

Dec 3, 2016 - Land ho! Last port, Miami.

My last journal entry was rather concise. This was because I awoke that morning feeling not quite up to snuff. As we ventured out into the humid Nassau heat, trying to locate a wifi station, the trek got the better of me. Immediately after that posting, as we threaded our way amongst the throngs of two cruise ships worth of tourists and the usual citizenry of Nassau, a profound sense of urgency overtook me, along with chills, sweats, vertigo, and nausea. Good ol' Brian had to either shelter me or pretend he didn't know me as I repeatedly...

Nov 6, 2016 - Weekend Extravaganza

Wow, what a weekend! I went to Jeanne & Laurie's house on Friday in time for dinner of chili and cornbread and ice cream. On Saturday, Jeanne took me to IHOP for a pancake breakfast, then to Runners High where we both bought sneakers, then to Whole Foods which was fun to look through, and then to Nothing Bundt Cake where I picked out four small bundt cakes for dessert tonight! Dinner was duck l'orange, rice, salad, and a taste of 4 different kinds of bundt cake! There was lemon, white white chocolate, white chocolate raspberry, and pumpkin!...

Oct 29, 2016 - Birdie Num Num

We were about an hour and a half from Miami airport, so we decided to stop off at a place called the Flamingo Garden – a sanctuary for rescued birds and other animals. And of course, give us pretty pink flamingos and we take hundreds of photos. (Only a couple for your viewing pleasure). Ms Garmin Mark II did a reasonable job in getting us around Florida, well, at least until we had to return our rental car to the airport. She kept insisting on taking us across grasslands to get onto the freeway. Fortunately, the hotel man had said that we...

In the USA 2016

Oct 25, 2016 - Soooo laid back

OK. So I thought that New Orleans was my favourite place so far. It has been replaced by Miami. Not that there is anything noteworthy to do there. It just has this really relaxed vibe about it, coupled with good food and big drinks. There are plenty of neon lights too, but unlike Las Vegas, it wasn’t feral. And it was warm – both day and night. Nice. Fabulous Art Deco architecture, too!

Sep 1, 2016 - Miami, Florida

We are now at the Regency Hotel in Miami for four nights. It is super hot and sticky! We have tucked into some delicious fresh salad and fruit and already found how easy it is to over eat in the US! Theo is going crazy over the cars- we hired a Nissan today much to Theo's disgust as the man next to us was hiring a black Mustang convertible! The man was actually jumping up and down with excitement and Theo looked on enviously! After a day of retail therapy yesterday to replace our damaged clothes we headed out to the Everglades. It was an...
