Apr 30, 2010 - Long Key...MM67

Long Key was called Cayo Vivora (Rattlesnake Key) by early Spanish explorers, a reference to the shape of the island, which resembles a snake with its jaws open, rather than to its denizens. It is smaller and less developed than the neighboring incorporated village of Islamorada to the northeast and city of Marathon to the southwest. The city of Layton is located on Long Key. After departing from 4 days at Curry Hammock SP, we headed back up the keys to Long Keys. Located near MM 67, Long Key has been a second favorite for us in the last...

Jan 16, 2010 - Long Key State Park

We left Greg's around 10 on Wednesday morning. The new GPS got us right on the Turnpike without getting lost as we had done the last time we attempted this navigation. Anne really likes this Christmas present! There was not as much construction on the Overseas Highway (US 1) once we got to Key Largo so the trip down through the Keys was not as slow as it had been two years ago. We arrived at Long Key State Park early in the afternoon even after stopping to mail our property tax and a 50th birthday card for our Webster mailman, Jimmy. We set...

Mar 18, 2009 - March 12th-18th Long Key, FL

Our second week at Long Key State Park was just as relaxing as the first. We did take a full day fishing trip off shore at Islamorada. Unfortunately, we did not bring back any "keepers". Saturday, the 14th of March, Skip and Gail Madsen visited us for the day from the Everglades. We had a great time at the Marathon Seafood Festival; continued the day at Long Key with hor'dorves, and then on to Islamorada for dinner. A wonderful time was had by all; they'll be our neighbors at Bahia Honda next week! YEAH! We're now trying to teach Kiki,...

Mar 12, 2009 - March 5th-11th...Long Key

I think the photos speak for themselves. This is such a relaxing trip for Bob and I, it's incredible! We love it! As you can tell, we moved from Bahia Honda State Park, up to Long Key State Park. We 're here for 14 days, and then back to Bahia for the last 25 days here in the Keys. Both parks offer something completely different and unique. Although, we enjoy our stays at both, its' still pleasant to capture yet another view of these beautiful Keys. Totally, unlike the rest of Florida, the Keys are made up of almost 100 islands (keys)...

May 12, 2008 - Long Key

We spent last night just outside Homestead. This morning it was all I could do to walk the short distance to the office to mail my postcards to Tommy. It is SO HOT AND HUMID!! I don't know how people live here or what they would do if the power went out. I did not get to the Coral Castle, Jackie, and it was only maybe 7 blocks from us. I stayed inside and tried to survive. Today is a whole different story. We're in the keys! There is a breeze and it's not as hot. The guy next to us is from Glendale (Ca). So he knows Manhattan Beach and said...

Mar 17, 2008 - Long Key State Park - FL

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!! Today we arrived at Long Key State Park. This is by far one of the nicest campsites we have had. The back bedroom window looks out toward the Atlantic Ocean. You walk out the door and walk about 30 feet and you are on the beach and at the waters edge. This is the longest we will be in one place, 7 nights altogether. Spencer and Randy went out snorkeling again today from the new campsite. We had just arrived and Spencer can't wait to get in the water. Randy is always a good sport and willing to go with him. The...

Mar 17, 2008 - Long Key State Park

While driving down we stopped at Cypress visitor center and saw several alligators. We bumped a tree while setting up the camper (need minor repair). Has been very windy, which is a little scary when in the camper. The beach here is hard to walk on due to all the sea weed. We have also seen a lot of Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish. They are pretty - they are a dark navy/purple color. CAMPGROUND NOTES: Sites are about 35 feet wide. Our site was #29. All are at 90 degree angles from the road. Site 11 looks particularly nice and wide but has a...
