Mar 8, 2017 - Key West FL

Tuesday was our last full day in Cayo Hueso and we were up early to see if we could finally take our seaplane ride to The Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson. We woke to rain drops pelting the roof – not a good sign – but the wind had dropped a bit so we headed off to the airport with guarded optimism. Despite the passing rain showers, the staff was confident that the weather would not be a problem so we checked in, signed our releases, they gave us a cooler of drinks for the day and we waited for our pilot John to escort us to our ride. Our...

Monday, we had a plan. We were going to get up early and head to Blue Heaven, a very popular breakfast joint. But the plan fell apart really quickly. We obviously didn’t get moving early enough, because by the time we got to Blue Heaven at about 10:30, there was a 90 minute wait to eat. So we pulled the plug on that idea and waddled over a block or so to The Firefly to give their breakfast a try. Michele had Chicken and Waffles and I didn’t. I had their special, a Grilled Yellowtail Snapper sammich. Both were good but not a “Dang, we need...

Mar 5, 2017 - Key West FL

Our Saturday in Cayo Hueso was a full one...highlighted by a high-brow bucket list type of event, followed by a visit to a historical house and lots of food; today will go down as one of our most memorable days. Well, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch. We headed downtown and parked at the Post Office at the corner of Eaton and Whitehead Streets then walked over to Duval, but since we were a bit early for our event, we headed down to D.J.’s Clam Shack. We had seen it a while back on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” and I was curious how good a...

Mar 4, 2017 - Key West FL

On Wednesday we got all set up in our less-than-optimal-but-still-functional site, then after a couple showers we were off to the Hogfish Bar for dinner. Hogfish used to be a hidden spot on Stock Island that was a favorite of the locals, but word has gotten out and while it is off the beaten path in an industrial area along the water, the tourists (of which I guess we are) have found it and made it very popular. We shared some hogfish tacos, steamed shrimp, fish dip, conch salad and ceviche. It was all pretty good and we didn’t leave much...

We’re officially back on the road. Our time in Broward was very productive as we knocked out all of our doctor appointments and most, but not all, of our visiting. If we missed you, we apologize, but we just ran out of time. We are obviously a wildly popular couple that could use some better time management skills. The first leg of this year’s journey is south to Key West for a week of food and fun...well, if history is any indicator it will probably be mostly food...but it also includes a seaplane ride to the Dry Tortugas and Fort...

Jul 23, 2016 - Last Full Day in Key West -- and What a Day It Was!!

The day started out slowly. We had breakfast here at the hotel and lounged around until time to go to Sloppy Joe's for pictures and the "Running of the Bulls." Great laughs, abundant joy, just an all-around good time. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a heat index a bit lower than 106 degrees. Oh, well, you can't have it all. I bought four raffle tickets for five dollars each to support scholarships these guys give to aspiring journalists In the Florida Keys and, what do you know, I won a Limited Edition (made...

Jul 22, 2016 - Happy Anniversary!!

Another beautiful day in Key West! We spent the morning at the Key West Butterfly Conservatory, our second visit and a must-do for all visits. It is an absolutely beautiful garden with numerous butterflies and some birds. A not-to-be-missed venue. We took advantage of the hotel pool this afternoon to cool off and then made preparationa for a "non-nerdy" event. We met Susan Miscally, Chip, and Chip's friend of forty years, Diana, at Sloppy Joe's for the second round of the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest. What a crazy, fun venue! We did not...

Jul 21, 2016 - Hemingway's Birthday

It would have been Hemingways' 117th birthday. I cannot tell you how much fun it has been so far to immerse ourselves in his work and his life. We started early this morning with coffee and Bloody Mary's with the "Papas." The event was at 9:00 AM at the Cypress House, a historic inn on Caroline Street. You can tell from the pictures I posted that everyone was having a good time. It was like being invited to a very welcoming fraternity gathering. We are so glad we dared to go. From there we went to the Custom House Museum on Front Street to...

Jul 20, 2016 - Key West and the Beginning of the Hemingway Days Celebration

We left Marathon about 9:00 AM and headed to Key West. We crossed the Seven Mile Bridge and again was reminded of what an engineering feat both the railroad and the bridge were, particularly at the time of their construction. We arrived in Key West, were greeted by some of the renowned roosters as we walked toward and around Duval Street, had lunch and then went to the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit. Yeah, we know this week is supposed to be about Hemingway, but we couldn't miss this one since it is on Truman Street near where we are...

May 11, 2016 - Views of the Keys - Key Largo to Key West

We moved a total of 88 miles today. It was a beautiful day for a drive, too - no wind. We're finally settled at Leo's Campground & RV Park on Stock Island in Key West. We arrived early but since no one was in our site last nite they allowed us to move in. That was easier said than done. Like most of the rv parks here, this is an older park that was built for smaller trailers. We have one of the larger sites - 38'. Bending our 35' trailer into the site took a lot of patience by both the driver & the director. After making several attempts...

May 2, 2016 - Key West

On Monday we went to Key West. We started with a fantastic breakfast at the Blue Heaven Café. This place was highly recommended and we can see why! Mostly outdoors, its a garden of eclectic art and décor, complete with free range cats and chickens! From there we toured around on the trolley for awhile learning about the history and celebrity of Key West. For instance, we learned that Earnest Hemmingway and Jimmy Buffet weren't the only famous people to have homes here. Kenney Chesney, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jimmy Johnson (coach), all have...

Apr 17, 2016 - 4/17/16-Day 7 Back to Key West

We started the day back in Key West. We had Kenneth's Birthday brunch at a very special place called Bistro 245, located at the Westin Key West Resort & Marina in Mallory Square. It was highly recommended, and we ate right on the ocean. The food was amazing! As we were eating a cruise ship docked right in front of us! After a leisurely brunch, we visited some of the shops in the square. I found a birthday hat to go with the birthday cow. If you've ever celebrated your birthday at our house, you know all about the birthday cow! She...
