Jul 12, 2020 - Key Largo to Key West and Everything In Between

What a fun 10 days it was with Kaia! She flew, by herself, into Fort Lauderdale on June 30th and returned on July 10th. There was a bit of anxiety on everyone’s part with this new chapter in her life but our fears were assuaged by the fact that we could accompany her to the gate at each end. On the way down into the Keys we stopped for dinner at Gilberts at Mile Marker 107 where Kaia enjoyed her first taste of a conch fritters and the tropical breezes. We stayed two nights at Keys Palms in Key Largo. Our site was adjacent to the pool and...

Mar 13, 2020 - Homeward Bound

We leave the Keys behind and continue our trip northward. Lake Okeechobee lies to the north and highways circle its wide girth, we choose to take the eastern roads as we wind through wild Florida. I’m looking forward to seeing from earth what others can see from space. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side for a water view as the large earthen perimeter holds back the water from flooding the homes and businesses that have sprung up in its shadow. It’s not until we get to the northern edge of “The Big O” that we actually see the water....

Mar 12, 2020 - Hammocks & Coral

In 1890 George Adderley left his Bahamas home and traveled to Vaca Key. Here he met Louisa, married and set about earning a living harvesting sponges and making charcoal. Within 13 years George was able to purchase 100 acres on Vaca Key. A few years later when the railroad came through the residents of the key demanded that a weekly stop be put in creating “Station Vaca”. This allowed George to make the pilgrimage to Key West to sell his goods and pick up supplies much faster than by boat. He lived on the property until 1949 when he sold it...

Mar 11, 2020 - Key West and mile 0

Key West and Old Key West are two very different places, so you can imagine my disappointment when we arrived on the key and it resembled nothing I had seen in books about Key West. Where was the Hemmingway style? We trudged on, weaving and merging with traffic, travelling on in the same direction. As the “new” gave way to the “old” I felt as though we had arrived. This is what I imagined this wonderland of creativity was like. Giant masterpiece trees with roots that grab on to the earth from branches up above. I call them Banyan Trees but...

Jan 18, 2020 - More of Key West

We woke today to dull skies and high winds, quite a contrast to the sun and blue skies of the past two days. We followed much the same pattern of yesterday. We rose and got ready, had breakfast, collected our things then we walked to the Southernmost Point accessible to the public of the continental USA. After being told repeatedly that this was the "Southernmost", we discovered that it was not quite. Another headland further round, but on Naval property was further south. The "southernmost house" no longer qualifies as a potential buyer,...

Jan 17, 2020 - Around Key West

We woke this morning and got ready then had breakfast. There was a bit more room to manoeuvre today, but Christine was disappointed that there were no boiled eggs. We collected our things and went round the corner to wait on the Hop on Hop off Trolley. We got out tickets and found some shade to wait in. It was not too long in coming, but there was a false alarm as a Trolley appeared in the distance and we waited in anticipation only to be disappointed as it drove past with a sign on window, "Private Charter". Ours was not far behind and we...

Jan 16, 2020 - Drive to Key West

We were up this morning and had breakfast in the hotel. It was rather crowded, but we managed to get seats and chatted to a few couples from California and Nebraska. I do not think the California couple really believed us when we said we had left -30F temperatures in Edmonton! We picked up our luggage, packed the car and set off for Key West. It was a good drive, leaving just after 9:30 am. The road was busy as we drove out of Fort Lauderdale and through Miami and on to the Over the Ocean Highway. We stopped at the Key Largo visitors centre...

May 29, 2019 - Key West Pictures from March

A lot of these pictures are of my trip into Key West alone to see all of the things Margie had no interest in. On one of our early trips into Key West we happened onto a sculpture park with about two dozen busts and descriptions of the influential people in Key West's history. I could feel Margie cringe when I began to look at them. It was decided then that I would come down some day on my own to see the historical parts of Key west and take the tours. So, on March 27th I toured the Key West Lighthouse, The Little White House, Ernest...

May 29, 2019 - Key West pictures from April 2019 Part One

I didn't get enough last month. This month I went to the city museum and the Wreckers' museum on my own and finally got the seafood pot pie at Little Pearl. This is only the beginning of April. I don't have enough picture allowance to put all of April up. This does cover the museum type stuff. So, I will have to wait a month to finish our Key West adventure in pictures. Stay tuned for April 2019 Part Two with parasailing and boating pictures.

May 28, 2019 - Pictures from February 2019 in Key west

Some background on some of these pictures: We were checking batteries on day and noticed that the ones in Margie's cart had slid off a support member and had partially fallen through the battery area. I had to left them up and but them back where they belonged. A fellow who was renting a site had to leave early. I had talked to him and helped him a few times while he was there. He told me that he had ordered a small 12 volt air compressor online the previous evening. He told me that when it arrived I could keep it for myself. We couldn't...

May 28, 2019 - Pictures in Key West from the month of January 2019

A little something a bout a few of these pictures: The soccer field where the police horse was, is the one we crossed most of the time we went into Key West to catch the free Duval Loop bus from the free parking lot we parked in. The picture of the mirror I put on the golf cart reminded me of one of the things I liked about our job in Key West. The boss would from time to time buy or order things and just put them in the maintenance trailer. He would rarely ask you to do anything with them but also never questioned you if you decided to...

Apr 28, 2019 - Key West-Week 32-Parasailing or My Resort My Rules or This is the Life

Week 32 4/22-28 Monday 22 A motor home came in today that had advertising painted on it for an online Real Estate company called Beamanbuyland.com (Be A Man Buy Land). The driver of it already had snap on covers to go over them and put them on without being asked. Wednesday 24 Today we went parasailing. This was my first time and Margie’s second time. It was pretty cool and better than I expected. There were about 11 people on the boat. Three guys went up together followed by the four couples, two people at a time. The man in the older...
