May 9, 2013 - Key West
Well we made it to the southern most point. It has been a great time, weather is good and everything is going fine. We got to see earnest Hemingway's house, and Harry S. Truman's "Little White House". We camped 22 miles outside of Key West at Bahia Honda State Park. Then we drove into Key West. Key West is very concentrated. I would hate to see it in the busy tourist season. We are heading towards the Everglades next.

We were really pleased that we decided not to travel down at night as the journey from Key Largo takes you right down to Key West and is beautiful as you pass through the small islands (Keys) that are linked by bridges and the ocean is a wonderful blue on either side of you. We had become aware that our visit to Key West was going to coincide with “Spring Break”. This is the spring vacation for the US colleges and universities and traditionally they pile into a car and head south to Florida for some sun and fun before their end of session...

Mar 8, 2013 - mile zero US hwy 1
Today was Key West day so we loaded our bikes into the truck and made the 50 mile trip to the very last key in the Florida Keys. As expected the minute we crossed onto the island it was bumper to bumper traffic so we headed down a side street a couple of miles from downtown to park. The idea of bringing the bikes worked great as we were able to maneuver through the myriad of mopeds, pedicabs, trolleys and fellow bikers on the streets. The island is about 4 miles by 1 mile but there were thousands of tourists, college spring breakers and, oh...

Finally the weather cooperated today. After a little rain along the scenic Overseas Highway (US1) on the way to Key West, the sun came out and stayed out for most of the day. The day was pleasent for walking around the city. There are 2 or 3 ways to tour Key West. The first is to visit all of the bars and pubs and concentrate on nothing else but drinking. Since it appears we were on the leading edge of Spring Break, most of the "young" people seemed to be taking this route. The second way is to shop. There are more jewelry shops per capita...

Mar 2, 2013 - Really, Really South
Today, I started heading north again but only up to Fort Myers. I left Florida City about 10:30 and got to the WalMart around 3:00 after driving up to Miami and then turning left to go across the peninsula. Tomorrow I'll head up to the Tampa area again as I need to get more warranty work done on the trailer this Monday at the Camping World there (if they ever call me back). The picture was taken a couple of days ago when 3 of us rode our motorcycles to the Southernmost point in the U.S.A. in Key West. It's a pretty wild place as the bars...

130210-Sun-0 miles-Today we took a ride on our bikes, but mostly relaxed until about 415 when we went with Rusty and Anne to listen to music in the garden at a B&B. Then we went to dinner on the beach and had great seafood. It was a great last night, and it is still only about 815pm.

130209-Sat-0 miles-Today we rode around the island in a clockwise direction so the water was always on our left. It was about 12-14 miles. We had a snack downtown after being at the civil war re-enactment at Ft. Zachary Taylor. Then on our way home we stopped at McD’s and split a frappe. It was a good day and the scooter ran well, but I still plan on looking at a new one on Tuesday. We are both tired.

130205-Tue-0 miles-I’m actually doing this on Wed. as I was so tired when I got home. No pictures – as I forgot my camera. We are in Key West and went to lunch with the Thrush’s at PePe’s, then they checked in at The Parrott Key resort and we sat outside. Then we went to happy hour at the Raw Bar and met the Lawyer’s. We had a great day. Our one Grandson, only 5, has a new email acct. His mother might kill me, but I you want to write him a short note, it is Evan at evan_decarlo@yahoo.com.

Jan 19, 2013 - Key West
After a nerve-wracking flight with almost missed flights we arrived in Ft. Lauderdale, only 30 minutes late, in a rain storm. So much for sunny Florida! Next day we walked along the seafront, did a bit of mall visiting and generally walked our feet off, as usual. On Friday we boarded the Maasdam and got settled in which didn’t take long as it is almost identical to the other Holland America ships we have been on. Except this time we have a cabin with a veranda which is really nice. It was a last minute upgrade (for a fee of...

Sometimes what we like to travel to a location that is totally different, unique from our "normal" environment. A place that is a little (or a lot) quirky - like San Fran, New Orleans, or Key West. For those of us who grew up during the '60s, we remember the counterculture of those times, whether we were immersed in one lifestyle or another. And we can enjoy seeing snippets of the world that is different than the one in which we live. Gary and I visited Key West over 20 years ago. Returning we noted there seemed to be more of a population...

Most of my friends would say that I am "up with the chickens". However, I am not usually up and breakfasting with live chickens. I heard about a place in Key West - on the Food Network, perhaps one of Guy's Diners, etc shows. Anyway, this is a unique place serving breakfast on the grounds of an old home in the historic district that has made a name for itself; both due to the quality of the food and service and the hospitality of the "naturalized" chickens that honor diners visiting on their lands. Yesterday Gary and I started our morning...

Jan 9, 2013 - Bluewater Key RV - our home in the Keys
On the internet you can find a wealth of knowledge, such as reviews on RV camping supplied by people with all varieties of interests. Sometimes I have wondered if the remarks provided are legitimate, or might be placed by the business to encourage more customers. Or did they represent an entirely opposite interest to mine? However, when you find a series of reviews that are over many seasons, and from people from many sections of the country AND they all write about how wonderful a place is - you just gotta try it! So, we did and we are not...
