Mar 7, 2016 - Ave Maria, Florida

On Sunday, Hazel and I traveled a few miles south of Immokalee to attend Mass at at the church in Ava Maria. A planned community and university launched ten years ago by Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino's Pizza, who invested $300 million into the project, located about 45 minutes from downtown Naples. Naming both the town and university Ave Maria, exemplifying his conservative Catholic view of life. Caught in the housing recession, only a fraction of the homes and commercial development have happened, but now housing sales are taking...

Feb 20, 2016 - A violent Florida storm

A violent Florida storm, and I was right in the middle of it. Joe and Kait Russo are full-time RVers, maybe in their mid to late 30's, who are taking a shot at making a living on the road. The Russo's website is weretherussos.com , and they post informative travel videos on YouTube here. Hazel was in Naples babysitting grandchildren for a few days, and I was parked four or five motorhomes down from the Russos in the Immokalee Casino parking lot when this storm hit last Monday. I was awakened in the middle of the night by the storm and my...

Feb 12, 2016 - Seminole Indian Casino in Immokalee

The Seminole Indian casino in Immokalee has become an anchor location for our time in Florida. I returned here this week for the third time in the past month, when getting in at the Corps of Engineers campground on the Caloosahatchee River was impossible. With just 28 camping spots, and reservations made by many RVers months ago, we were darn lucky to squeeze in the 13 days we did get. And, I was able to book one night next week, our 14th night, which is all I'm allowed until next year. That island on the river campground is that popular,...

Jan 31, 2016 - Lake Trafford Marina

Hazel is still up in balmy Minnesota having some dental work done, and my time was up at the Corps of Engineers campsite at Franklin, with no other available spaces. I packed up and headed South 40 miles to the Seminole Indian casino at Immokalee to spend a few days. But, upon arriving, all of the RV spots along the edge of the parking area were blocked off. Security told me they were closing RV parking off until Sunday, because of a big fireworks show that was being held on Saturday, and they recommended I head down to Lake Trafford, where...

Dec 10, 2015 - Airboat ride!

11 of us in a camera club had an outing to Lake Trafford just outside of Immokalee to ride on an airboat around the lake to see many birds, alligators, and nature's beauty. I saw so much more than I could capture in pictures and I just know I would be in paradise if I was in a kayak in some areas of this lake! The airboat went where regular boats can't go and into some places I wouldn't go in a kayak, but if I did kayak here, I could get more clear pictures and birds wouldn't fly away so quickly. There are lots of alligators, but in my...

May 6, 2014 - DOME WALKING

We went back down to the preserve to get a few more caches and to walk the trails. If we wait until a few months from now the rains shall have made the trails a swamp and we dont like to walk in water, some people love to walk the wet trails. We did have some rain here a few days ago and most of that was gone , except for a part of the trail that had water on it. Just about feet of the trail had some water , but we found a way around the wet spot. The rest of the trail was dry, after that rain we had plants and flowers out for us to see...

The day after is a different day of course and you can see why. We went to the "DOME" trails for some Geocaching and trail walk the other day. We got there around 1p.m. and by 2p.m. the skiies opened up and the rain started to come down. We walked in the rain with are rain gear on and made it back to the truck before it started to come down like dogs and cats. Today is Sunday and a different day it is !! The sun is out and not a cloud in the sky. We did about three miles of trail walking and Geocaching in the area. Had a great time, Norma...

May 3, 2014 - Walking The Dome At The "crew"

The weekend is here again and time to go out into the woods. I see there is a few new caches in the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed ( CREW ) down towards Immokalee , Florida about a hours drive from Cape Coral. We arrived about 1 P.M. and could see dark clouds out west of us and I think we can walk the trail and do some Geocaching before the rains come in on us. The Yellow loop trail is about two miles long and will bring us back to the parking lot. With stopping for some caches , we should be able to do this in about two hours and...

Jan 13, 2014 - Lake Trafford

From our Caloosa Cottage in Alva FL ... Monday, January 13, 2014 With our weekly trips to St Petersburg and occasional visitors we have stayed quite busy. The days seem to fly by. I thought I would post some overdue pictures. These were just taken on my phone, so the quality is not great. On Thursday we made what we hope was Charlie's last visit to St Petersburg for a while. He is not scheduled to return until July. I guess that means we will be back in FL then, but we will see what transpires. One day at a time. I have more pics I want...

On the Road Again

Dec 21, 2013 - Hunting Season !!!!!

We wanted to go out in the woods this Sat. the first day of winter to walk some new trails at the "CREW" stands for Corkscrew regional ecosystem watershed that has over 60,000 acres and miles of walking trails. In 2012 they opened a new section of the preserve called Caracara Prairie Preserve Trails , the preserve is about 367 acres of ranch land adjacent to the rest of the preserve trails. This preserve is home to Caracara, state bird of Mexico that has its winter home here in the park. You can see gopher tortoises, sandhill cranes,white...

Apr 18, 2013 - Safari in the Evening

So, if I went kayaking in the morning and on a safari in the evening, what did I do in the afternoon? Oh, okay, I'll tell you. I spent my money on stupid video machines in a mildly smoky casino in Immokalee, then ate an early dinner at a restaurant called Rib City. Ave Maria is a little town of catholics south of Immokalee and isn't on many Florida state maps! It is self-sufficient or shortly will be, as a gas station will open next month. We had to drive on Pope John Paul II Drive to get into town and we could see the back side of the...

Feb 26, 2010 - Airboats & Alligators

The Merry Mariners Boat Club's "Land Excursion" coordinator, Joan Church, set up another fabulous Friday February 26. We traveled about 30 miles East of Cape Coral (land part) for an Airboats & Alligators outing on Lake Trafford just West of Immokalee, FL. Lake Trafford is a 1500 acre lake, much of which has only a foot or so of water and a soft mud bottom that is several feet deep. Airboats are the only way of visiting most of this shallow area. The cold north wind kept the gator sightings to a couple of dozen - a small fraction of what...
