Mar 7, 2012 - Laid Back Day

Both of us slept in today and basically had a laid back day. Quite nice. We had campfires for the past 2 nights. Still “cheating” with the Duraflame logs but what the hell, it keeps a nice flame and keeps a basic fire to put the wood on. The flames were dancing as the wind blew in short gusts, keeping the flames bright and high and at times spinning in the fire pit like a small tornado. Had ice cream and fresh ripe strawberries around the campfire. I told Minnell I felt almost naughty, sitting by a fire with ice cream. Another advantage of...

Mar 6, 2012 - O'Leno State Park

We left St. Augustine on Monday morning after doing some rather mundane tasks like laundry and cleaning. It’s a 2 hour drive to High Springs and the O’Leno State Park. It’s also a drive back to the less populated part of Florida and into a campground like we’ve used most of camping lives-tent to popup to rondo. Dirt roads almost too narrow to drive through. Parking pads at different angles. Sites 25 to 60 feet long and 16 to 28 feet wide. Lots of woods around us. No sounds of a freeway. Squirrels tormenting Bella. And a place to relax and...

Apr 28, 2009 - O'Leno State Park

O'Leno SP is six miles north of High Springs, on the Santa Fe River, just north of where the river goes underground for 3 miles before rising again! It eventually flows into the Suwanee River. The land over it is called the Natural Land Bridge (naturally!), and it was a popular method to cross the river (ha!). The old Spanish trail and the first federally funded road connecting St. Augustine and Pensacola used this crossing. Leno was founded in the mid 1800s along the banks of the Santa Fe River just upstream from where the river...

Mar 24, 2009 - O'Leno State Park

O'leno state park is near highspring, florida for the next day stay. The Santa Fe River runs through the state park and drops in to a sink hole, then resurfaces about three mile away at River Rise area. O'Leno had a old grist mill built on the river, now what is left is the old rock dam in the river. The park has miles of trails for you to see all kinds of plants and animals. They have a suspension bridge originally constructed by the civilian conservation corps (CCC) in 1938. I wonder if we may have the unemployed go to work at these camps?...

Jan 2, 2008 - High Springs, FL

When we went to sleep on New Year's Day it was 65 degrees and when we woke up it was 40 degrees, windy and clear. The cold front had arrived and delivered Florida record breaking lows over the next several days (nights in the teens!). Although people here in Florida would make comments about the fact that two snowbirds from Colorado were complaining about weather this cold, they neglected to consider that 40 degrees in Colorado is also accompanied by very strong sunshine at 5,280 feet above sea level. Believe me, it makes a...
