Mar 28, 2019 - Land & Air to Ft Lauderdale

It was a busy day of travel to get us from our home in Hernando to our hotel in Ft Lauderdale. Leaving home in Big Tow at 5:50 am and getting to our hotel room in Ft Lauderdale at 12:30 was quite surprising and made us question why we took 6:40 total time flying in from Orlando when we can drive it in just over 4 hours. It had something to do with a better air fare by flying into Orlando when we are returning from Rome.

Jan 18, 2019 - Fort Lauderdale

Wednesday, January 16 Up early (4:15) in the cold and dark to make our way to SeaTac for the flight to Fort Lauderdale. It was a slower trip through security with the shutdown in place, but we made it for the cross country flight. We landed in Fort Lauderdale at 5:00 pm local time, got our bags, and made our way to the car rental desk where there was no line! It is definitely different wrestling the bigger suitcase—good thing we won’t have to do that once we get on the cruise. I put the hotel address is as being in Fort Lauderdale when it...

Panama Canal Cruise

Dec 19, 2018 - Sail Away

Our bad traveling luck continued. We had put in a wake-up call – it never came. Joe got up to the bathroom in the middle of the night and, closed the door – we found ourselves locked out of the bathroom the next morning. The breakfast area could hold about 10 people and there must have been 30 people getting breakfast; it was hot stuffy and the rubbish bins were overflowing. We sat in the lobby and had a quick bite to eat. Not Holiday Inn Express at its finest moment. We got the shuttle to the pier and things turned around from there. These...

Dec 18, 2018 - Fly to Fort Lauderdale

We got going, showered and had breakfast. As I was cleaning up, I heard a text message come in; it was from United advising us our flight from OKC to Houston was delayed 2 ½ hours due to fog in Houston – no mention of rebooking us out of Houston, since we would now miss our connecting flight. I got online to check – no re-booking, so I called United and waited for almost 30 minutes for an agent who verified there was no re-booking because there were no flights to book. I advised her we were on a cruise and we needed to get to FLL within the...

Adventures for 2018

Nov 1, 2018 - Fort Lauderdale, Florida

We arrived in Miami as scheduled and without any major problems. We had reserved a seat on the bus to take us to the airport. The bus only goes to the air terminals, not the Car Rental Center. I love how the bus drivers describe how “easy” it is to get from the terminal to the Car Center when it is anything BUT easy. If you have ever had the “pleasure” of trying to get from one of the terminals to the Car Rental Center, you know what I’m about to describe. Having had this experience previously I decided to leave Julieann at the terminal,...

Nov 22, 2017 - Fort Lauderdale FL

It was a beautiful day to drive to the Embassy Suites in Fort Lauderdale We were accompanied by Diane Compton who we met on Cruise Critic. She lives a few miles down the road from us. She was very enjoyable company for the 4+ hour drive. The Embassy Suites is still a very nice hotel, spacious lobby, eating area and bar. The rooms are quite large. The added attraction is the free happy hour from 5-7 and free full breakfast buffet in the morning. And the shuttle (not free) to the port. All the Cruise Critic people wore Mardi Gras beads to...

Feb 4, 2017 - disembark

Getting off the largest cruise ship in the world was as easy as getting on. Since we did not have a flight to catch and are not morning people, we opted for a later disembarkation time. A new app that is being tested in Fort Lauderdale port, allowed us to complete immigration and customs formalities before our feet touched land. The agent scanned in the QR code on the phone, checked our passports and we were out the door. We had left our car off site at the Park'N Go and the shuttle buses were on the spot waiting for us. They drove us to...

Feb 3, 2017 - Fort Lauderdale, FL

We left Plattsburgh yesterday, and spent the night at the Best Western in Burlington, due to our early flight to Fort Lauderdale (via Jet Blue). We arrived in Fort Lauderdale and took a free shuttle to the Econo Lodge. My suitcase got ripped and I got a $100 voucher for a future flight (after returning home). The room was ok, but not real impressive. You could see outside when the door was shut, but it did lock so we were fine. (Much better room at same hotel on way back). We were close to a Subway and a Little Caesars, right around the...

Jan 28, 2017 - board the Harmony of the Seas

I'm beginning to wonder if somebody is trying to tell us something. When we checked into the hotel in Fort Lauderdale, we ended up in a handicapped room. No asked if we wanted or needed one. The room was large of course - large enough for a person to move around in a wheel chair. After living in the motor home where we have to doh-si-doh around each other, the space felt luxurious. The downside was the bathroom. In order to access the sink from a chair, there was absolutely no counter space. There's nothing I hate more than having to...

Jan 19, 2017 - The journey so far

We have completed the first leg of The World Cruise. This is the shortest leg with 8 sea days and 3 ports visited. We have travelled 4,138.2 miles since leaving Southampton at an average of 19 knots per hour while crossing the Atlantic. (You can just tell Ian wrote that bit can't you.) At Fort Lauderdale 700 people disembarked to be replaced by 700 more. The dynamics have changed a little with more American guests. The entertainment has been very good on the ship. The shows are of a high standard and varied. There have been singers, a...

Jan 16, 2017 - "Wild Florida"

We left Port Canaveral at 7.30 to travel the short distance to Port Everglades. It has been a tremendous day and Ian is even more inspired to follow astronomy. If he tells me we are going on another holiday of a lifetime and it involves space travel, forget it! When we woke we looked out of our cabin and had our first glimpse of Port Everglades. Fabulous houses on the waterfront and luxurious yachts. I asked Ian if we could have one but he said no! The weather is due to be sunny with temperature of 26 degrees. Today we are off to see the...
