Jan 8, 2013 - Cruising Jacksonville
Today we cruised around the area to get a "feel" for this part of Florida and see a little local color. Amelia Island was beautiful. Very clean and classy. The first picture is of a free fishing facility that is just gorgeous. It is open 24 hours a day, has free pump out service for boats as well as fresh water available. There is a huge boat launch and lots of room to park. There were no rules about overnight parking and I am sure it would be a great free stop-over spot. We passed 2 more of these fishing areas in a small stretch of...

Jan 7, 2013 - Florida!
We made it to Florida! We are at the far north east corner of Florida at Fort Clinch State Park. It is so beautiful here! We have water and electric hookups and the vegetation is so wild and tropical that it looks like a jungle. We had a short travel day - only 165 miles. We got here by lunch and found a nice site without having any reservations. We are very impressed with Florida State Parks, so far! After lunch, we took a walk to the Fort. Found deer tracks in the sand on the trail. There are bike trails here (unpaved) that we may need to...

Nov 13, 2012 - Last day at Fort Clinch
From Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach, FL ... Monday, November 12, 2012 I have to keep this entry short and sweet because our internet here is very intermittent and s l o w. It's a miracle I was able to upload these photos! Tomorrow will be our last day here in Fernandina Beach. The week has gone by so fast. But time always flies when you're having fun. And we have definitely enjoyed our time here. Last night we slept with the windows open so we could listen to the waves crashing on the ocean. Ahhhh, now that's relaxing. The...

Nov 7, 2012 - Travel to Fernandina Beach, FL
From Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach, FL ... Wednesday, November 7, 2012 When our alarm went off this morning at 6:30am, we reluctantly crawled out of our warm bed. The last couple mornings here have been chilly which is perfect sleeping weather in our opinion. We spent more time watching the morning news than we normally do on a travel day. But it was tempting to watch the election coverage. We were also checking election returns from Virginia since we are not seeing that on the local news here in FL, of course. We had...

May 8, 2012 - Pirates ahoy...
Great week for this trip to Ft. Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach...our first visit to this great location, camped right up to the dunes on the beach. Waking up to sounds of waves crashing and birds singing couldn't have been more relaxing. Miles of beach to walk and plenty of wild life to see. Had a group of 5 or 6 deer that grazed the dunes each morning, saw several active sea turtle nests, and plenty of marine life along the beach. Haven't seen a horseshoe crab since my vacations in Atlantic City, NJ as a boy. Hundreds of sand crabs...

Dec 15, 2009 - Family Fun at Fort Clinch
We had another wonderful day at Fort Clinch. We spent the day with my brother and his wife, Bobby, (Bob) and Liz, and their two youngest granddaughters. We had a warm and sunny day, perfect for eating outside and a walk on the beach. We have not seen them for over two years, and enjoyed our visit very much. Fort Clinch is located next to the Naval Submarine Base at Kings Bay. The Submarine Base is the U.S. Atlantic Fleet's home port for U.S. Navy Fleet Ballistic Missile nuclear submarines armed with Trident missile nuclear weapons. We were...

Dec 14, 2009 - Fort Clinch State Park
We are having some very rainy and foggy days, but are making the best of them. Today we visited the new fishing pier. It is 1/2 mile long, so it was a long walk, but a very beautiful one. Jerry spotted one dolphin and we saw a ton of birds. We are hoping for a clearing in the weather so Jerry can do some fishing. Fort Clinch State Park has two campgrounds, one on the Amelia River, the other on the Atlantic Beach. The Amelia River campground has two hot-water restroom/shower facilities for 41 campsites in an oak hammock. The Atlantic Beach...

Jan 8, 2009 - IN A CLINCH
We have finally made it to Florida and our first stop was Fort Clinch State Park. Fort Clinch is at the extreme northeastern part of Florida. If you go any further north you are in Georgia…any further east and you are in the Atlantic Ocean. Fort Clinch is on Amelia Island, near the town of Fernandina Beach. The island is working hard to attract tourism. They have a quaint old town area along the water and the Ritz-Carlton has opened up a large resort at the south end of the island. Fort Clinch was originally created in 1794 by order of...

Dec 8, 2007 - Fort Clinch State Park
The fog rolled in last night making the air so moist, that when the wind blew, it sounded like rain when the accumulated moisture fell from the trees onto the trailer. It was very messy as we tried to get packed up and on the road. The gnats and mosquitoes were thick and had us struggling to find joy. Fortunately, it was a short drive to Amelia Island with only one stop at Walmart (for groceries) on the way. There are two campgrounds within Fort Clinch State Park - one on the river side and the other on the Atlantic. We found our site (#23)...
