Oct 28, 2013 - To Fernandina Beach, FL for three days

From Charleston to Fernandina, we were in the ocean overnight. The bad news is that we motored, but the good news is that it was a relatively easy trip. Once again the wind was too light to make sailing possible. We made such good time that we got to the inlet at Fernandina Beach before dawn. Inlets can be dangerous. We DO NOT enter unfamiliar inlets in the dark. This was our first time to enter this inlet, so we actually ended up motoring north for a while and then heading back south to get to the inlet at first light. The harbor at...

Mar 9, 2013 - Amelia Island

Today we went over to Amelia Island so I could buy a ticket for the Concours on Sunday. The cars were beginning to arrive at the Ritz-Carlton from the unloading area at the Fernandina Beach Airport. The airport was also packed with private jets that had flown in for the event. We went to Fernandina Beach so Sue could shop some more and this time she actually bought. We had dinner at Espana, a spanish tapas restaurant. We had some tapas and meat paiella. All was good. I was so hungry from walking around town that we ate most of the paiella...

Nov 13, 2012 - Bike ride and Sandy Bottoms...

Bikes unloaded and ventured out on the 2 mile journey through the park to the main drag. A quick ride to an old hang out called "Sandy Bottoms" for a light lunch along the ocean. Not much difference from the old days, except it's got more of a "stale beer" smell than before. Escaped to the outside bar seating next to the shoreline, which still is a great view however you look at it. Followed the road where it took us....back into historic Fernandina Beach and the quaint shops and waterfront. Nice not to have the throngs of tourists crowding...

Nov 12, 2012 - Another day, another sunrise at the beach

It's amazing to hear the constant sound of the surf here at Fort Clinch, almost like there's a fan running outside the RV. Seems like only a few months ago we were here and the sounds were muffled by the dunes and vegetation. Not so today. Hard not to love waking to the sounds of the ocean which surround the campground. We've been rewarded during our stay with small herds of deer roaming the park grounds and dunes, and the tiny paw prints on our patio mat show we get our nightly visit from local racoons making their rounds. Pretty...

Nov 8, 2012 - Beach, Fort Clinch & Golf...Veteran's Day Weekend at Fernandina Beach

And so the week begins here at Fernandina Beach and historic Fort Clinch State Park. A chilly start to the trip, but an opportunity to test out the heating system in the RV overnight...it was only a matter of time. Another system that works just perfectly, so happy about that. Here with our friends Dave and Lisa and looking forward to an exciting week of exploring this old fort and watching the historic military reenactments from various periods of our past. Always learn something new and walk away glad I didn't serve in those times of...

Jul 30, 2012 - Jekyll Island to Dufauski Island, SC

After a great time in Jekyll with good beach time for Sue, we are anticipating seeing the family in Brunswick where we will be for several days. Also, we get to see The Grahams on Oddysee. We have been keeping up with them over the years after we met them on the Great Loop in 2006. We wait to leave until 1030 since it was low tide and Jekyll Creek is famous for shallow water. Low tide was 0830. With over 8' tide today, this gave us an extra 2' and we read 6.5 feet all the way through, so this was good, even though we have gone through at...

Just Relax

Jul 25, 2012 - Marineland, FL to Jekyll Island, GA

We are now totally spoiled on this trip. Putzing along and enjoying everything has been amazingly good for the soul. The boating has been very easy these past several days, and the boat is running well. No issues at all, and as such we get to sight see a lot. Critters are few since it is hot, we guess. No manatees, but do see some dolphins and birds. We travel only a few miles to St. Augustine for a couple of days. Instead of staying on the ICW at the popular marina at St. Augustine where most go, we decide to take a slight side stream to...

Just Relax

May 16, 2012 - Fernandina Beach Florida

Drove to Amelia Island (took a ferry across the St. Johns river) where we visited Fernandina Beach Florida, a very old town that was used by smugglers in the 1800s as their outpost. We visited the Palace Saloon, the oldest saloon in Florida. Ate at Britt's Waterside Cafe, outstanding food. Had Fried Green Tomatoes, Gazpacho soup with lumped crab meat and enchiladas filled with crab, lobster and shrimp. Walked around the Ritz Carlton, which is located on the beach facing the Atlantic Ocean. Very lovely.

Apr 26, 2012 - Cumberland Island GA to Duplin River Anchorage

Thursday, April 26, 2012 – Cumberland Island, Georgia to the Duplin River, Georgia Hi all! We stayed at Cumberland Island, Georgia yesterday. Cumberland Island is a National Park and is very beautiful. There are no stores and amenities on the island so all the people who have houses there or come by ferry for the weekend/week have to bring everything with them. It’s nice to have the boat and already have everything we need. There are many hiking trails, nice beaches, historical mansions and the most incredible are the wild horses. It is so...

Jan 27, 2012 - Amelia Island

Today is Michael's birthday. What sweet memories I have of raising him and his brother! We've been blessed...and now our sons are collecting memories of their own children. Meanwhile, Alan and I are adding new experiences to our marriage. I've been noticing that, as we travel, after several nights in one spot, I find that I become restless and am ready to move on. We humans are such complex creatures. I never dreamed I would find such delight in migration. We just completed a four-night stay at Amelia Island. We camped at Fort Clinch State...

Mar 27, 2011 - Fenandina Beach - Part 2

Stay Tuned - we're getting ready for our 2011 trip. First, we're heading out to a (Susan's) family wedding in Fresno, CA, visiting some friends on the way, then visit some more friends in Santa Barbara on the way to Santa Rosa - that's where my brother, Harold, calls home. And maybe a few more stops. After that we'll head North up to Washington and, as best we can, head East and wander around until we reach Upper Michigan. From there we'll pick up I-75 and slide down South back to Fernandina Beach. So what's new? In last month's Motorhome...

THERE WE ARE

Mar 3, 2011 - Fort Clinch

February 28 - March 3 Fort Clinch Monday, February 28 is Tom's birthday. He was born in 1941 (you do the math) so this was a special event and we dined in Fernandina Beach at LeClos where we had a superb meal. We had set up reservations at Fort Clinch back in January when we were there on our way down. It was much warmer now, than when were were there in January and we walked the beach before heading out to Tom's birthday dinner. The next two days of our stay at Fort Clinch were very windy and the dredging operations (there is a submarine...
