Feb 18, 2011 - perfection

In 1998 a wonderful film called The Truman Show satirized reality TV, which was still in its infancy then. The protagonist was a man who became aware that he had unwittingly been the star of a TV show, which followed his every move 24/7 since he was born. He lived in a beautiful town and everyone around him was an actor. Once he understood his situation, he looked for a way out of the beautiful bubble where he had spent his life. Seaside Fl was the location for the beautiful bubble set in this film. It is one of the most perfect towns we...

Feb 17, 2011 - no tar balls here

The mess caused by the explosion of the BP oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico last spring, dominated US news and was covered extensively throughout the world. But we and the media have short attention spans and once the well was capped, we moved on to other things. But here the story is far from over. The evening news is full of stories about the compensation process, which appears to be coming to an end. Ken Feinberg, the heroic lawyer who volunteered to take on the distribution of relief funds, is being criticized by BP for giving away...

Feb 16, 2011 - the Emerald Coast

We left the peace and quiet of the Forgotten Coast and followed the sea shore to a much more built up and touristy Emerald Coast. And we left a closely packed commercial campground for a spacious state park. It was hard to take a decent photo of this campsite; we are totally surrounded with trees and can't see our neighbors without taking a stroll. But the greenery isn't too tall and the newly repaired satellite dish has a great view of the sky and is working perfectly. For the first time since we left home, we have a fire ring - s'mores...

Oct 25, 2010 - Destin, FL

Oct 24, Sun - Mon 25th, spent both days at Henderson Beach State Park. Weather was not the greatest Sun afternoon with a pending storm due in but we walked the boardwalk from our campsite over the dunes to the beach. We both got "our toes in the water and our a--in the sand" sitting on a ridge of sand the waves had left. Monday AM, we had a tornado watch until 1pm which only amounted to a sprinkle and it cleared right up then we were off the the beach again. Very relaxing 2 days. Tues Oct 25, left the beaches and traveled 325 miles today...

Oct 6, 2010 - Florida experience

We had a wonderful trip with the RV from Nawlins to Destin,in a State RV park right on the beach (Henderson Park) Everything is so neat and clean. On the road coming here, we stopped at the Welcome centres as you enter each State. (Louisiana, Mississipi, Alabama and Florida) The centres is unbelievably neat and tidy and you can see that they cater to make visitors feel welcome. Free coffee and fruit juices and really friendly. At this point we are at Destin, a few miles from Pensicola. The sand on the beach is as white as you can get and...

Oct 6, 2010 - Our vacation with our SA friends begins.

I apologize that I am not able to check in as regularly as usual. We are having a fantastic time with Johan and Isobel. On Monday we spent the day in the French Quarter. We took the Algiers Ferry from the Westbank across to the Riverwalk and the French Quarter. Because none of us had eaten breakfast yet we decided to stop at The Crazy Lobster for brunch. Oh La La … we ordered a Seafood Bucket filled with lobster, king crab, snow crab, Dungeness crab, shrimp, clams and mussels – plus potatoes and corn on the cob. Breakfast???!!!!!!! Yes,...

Living our RV Dream!

Sep 10, 2010 - Destin, FL (Day 2)

What a wonderful day we had today. The weather was beautiful and the water was 86 degrees. We ran errands in the morning and then hung out at the beach and pool. You couldn't ask for a better day. We ended the day with cocktails on the beach with a couple (Linda & Mike) we met. They are from the Orlando area. We got along so well, we plan on meeting up with them next year, right here on the beach. Tomorrow we are heading out for New Orleans. We will stay there 2 nights. Ted and I are really excited about going there. We had airline tickets,...

Sep 9, 2010 - Destin, FL

SURPRISE!!!!! We're in Destin, FL, not Tallahassee. We really wanted to be by a beach and we would have to go another hour south to get to a beach near Tallahassee, soooo.....we decided to drive another 2 hours west. Makes sense, doesn't it? HA! HA! The joy of not being on any schedule and traveling by the seat of our pants. We are on the Emerald Coast of Florida. It is beautiful here. We are right on the beach. Really! We are parked on the sand watching the waves. Let's hope high tide doesn't wash us away. We are going to stay here at...

Jun 24, 2010 - Destin, FL

Still no wi fi BUT at least we're back in Florida. At a great Topsail State Park. Interestingly, this park was a private campground before the State bought the property. Beach is messed up - not with tar or oil (yet) but with green algae along the shore line. I'm not going swimming in that stuff, we'll go to the pool. RV is acting funny - last time was a fuel pump, this time it's in the exhaust system, something to do with the turbo emission (?) control. Waiting for parts, again, supposed to be in this AM and we'll be on the road again in...

Southwest Express

Jun 1, 2010 - Henderson State Park, Destin, Florida

All this time of living in Florida and we've never been to Destin. Two things surprised us 1) the absolutely white sand and 2) it's like Palm Beach Gardens revisited i.e. Barnes & Noble, Starbucks, Gap, Old Navy etc., etc., etc. Although once you enter Henderson State Park, which is right on the beach, you would never believe what is behind you. Had we been able to stay at Grayson State Park on Santa Rosa Beach (reservations are often made for these campgrounds a year in advance)we would probably have preferred it since it's a little more...

(5,359) Update: Thursday 5/06/2010 Location: Henderson Beach State Park, Destin, Florida. Weather: Warm..Highs near 90, Lows in the 70’s Bright Sunshine Howdy Family and Friends: Another day in Paradise has come to an end. The day started out with cool breezes coming through the screened window near the bed and the sun peeking over the palmetto bushes in our eyes through the same window. You can’t stay asleep with that going on for sure. I love the early morning and the freshness and expectations it brings to mind. What is even better is...
