Jan 14, 2013 - Sugar Cane Tour
I and 22 other women from Carefree went to Clewiston to go on a 4 1/2 hour tour of the sweetest town in the U.S. where the United States Sugar Corporation grows and processes sugar cane and makes orange juice. We met at the Clewiston Chamber of Commerce, saw their museum and a short film, and then were driven by bus to the fields and refineries. We also had a buffet lunch at the Clewiston Inn and got a tour of part of the city to see where the founders lived and see the levee that separates the town from Lake Okeechobee. Sugar cane is an...

Nov 13, 2011 - Crooked Hook RV Park, Clewiston, Florida
We moved our motorhome to this park to cut the time spent on the road traveling between home (remember home is where ever our motorhome is parked) and Fort Lauderdale. The park is located along Route 27 across the highway from Lake Okeechobee's south west shore. There were Orange Groves to the west of the park and sugar fields surrounding the park on two sides. A short drive to the south east was the start of the Everglades. Although the Everglades were just about at our front door in driving terms the actual Everglades National Park was...

Mar 14, 2011 - Leaving the Keys
On our last day on the Keys, we decided to relax on the beach, read, and begin to chart our course north. From 6-10 p.m. a performer named Yankee Jack was scheduled to play at the camp's outdoor pub. We heard him warming up from our campsite, and we decided to stop by. It turned out to be a great evening. He was funny, talented and versatile, singing a wide variety of blues and ballads, with a healthy dose of Jimmy Buffett favorites. All ages were dancing, even a small, limber four-year old with long blond hair. She reminded us so much of...

Nov 10, 2010 - Jacksonville, FL to Clewiston, FL
Traveling with Carol, Lou & Beau ................. After we left Jacksonville, we arrived in Clewiston in just one day, and checked into the Clewiston/Lake Okeechobee KOA. It is very close to the Everglades. Mosquitoes love it here, so I don't go out after dark. Lou goes out with Beau, if he needs to. Chris, Jessica and Blade are living here in the park. Jessica is a teacher on an Indian Reservation and Chris works out of his RV as a computer programmer. Blade goes to a sitter during the day. Lou spends quality time with Blade. He is a dear...

May 26, 2010 - Ft. Myers to Clewiston on Lake Okeechobee
While still in Ft. Myers we felt it was time to check Dande's fuel filters since she was running about 3-4 mph slower than she usually does. The mechanic said we had built up some algae. So we added chemicals to the fuel tank and off we went. It was a perfect traveling day up the Caloosahatchee River to Clewiston, on the perimeter of the Lake. Went through 2 small locks. We spent the night after some food and brew at the notable Tiki Bar & Restaurant at Roland Martin's Fish Camp and Marina.

Dec 25, 2009 - Clewiston update
How time flies, its Christmas day and 6 days since the last update: Weather has been great and cool at night but we haven't had to use the heaters at night. Still getting things ship shape on the coach - we had some sun screens made for the front windows - there is a tremendous amount of heat generated if the sun shines through the big window in the front, these screens block out 80% of the UV but allow us to see out and have more privacy inside. We have been looking for an alternative RV site for January and found one in Webster FL, its...

Dec 18, 2009 - Welcome Canada Quebec event
On the 17th the nearby town of Clewiston had events to welcome the Canadians from Quebec. The day started with a golf tournament and dinner. We didn't attend, but we did go to the evening festivities in downtown Clewiston where they closed off Bond street. There were samples and booths from local vendors and local entertainers. For a small town we we impressed with the effort. The locals seemed surprised that not all of Canada is French. Last night we went to dinner at the Clewiston Inn the finest establishment in town for dinner and the 2...

Dec 1, 2009 - Clewiston, Florida - December destination
Sorry I messed this entry up and deleted it by mistake - will redo later Dec 12 Arrived in Clewiston without any real delays it was a straight drive down Hwy 27 it wasn’t a major interstate so there were a few traffic lights as we went through a few small towns - I think our average speed was 57 MPH so it wasn’t to bad - about 190 miles The site is large, surrounded by French Canadians and overlooks the lake in the park. Facilities look OK, there’s a nice pool and recreation center and the town is very close by with lots of Spanish and...

Nov 14, 2009 - Lake Okeechobee
Ok, Saturday. Or maybe first, Friday night…not sure what time it was that I got up, went thru the “dogs room/bathroom” and over the gate into the kitchen. Then turned around and completely forgot there was a gate there, and went into a fabulous sumersault into the dog’s crate and the floor! After RJ got me up, made me three plastic baggies of ice, and helped me back to bed, I eased my broken body by listening to the new Stephen King book about the town that woke up to find it was covered by a dome….with ice bags on my chest, knee, and...

Nov 13, 2009 - Clewiston and Okeechobee
Friday morning was downright cold, south Florida or Canada, where WERE we??? We got things packed up for our trip to Lake Okechobee, and then went over to the Royal Palm Hammock Trail. It was getting warmer but we saw no real wild life. A couple of good pics of spiders along the way though! Then walk the dogs, slides in, and off we went! The trip north was easy. Not much going on up 27. We did notice an unusual number of police as we passed Pembroke Pines, but after checking online, they are known for their speed traps, so…. Also, we kept...

Feb 15, 2009 - Clewiston, FL - Lake Okeechobee
We left Grassy Key about 9 o’clock for our short ride of about 180 miles to Clewiston. As usual, we had the sightseers on U.S. 1 through Islamorada and Key Largo and then a little road construction sprinkled in to slow us down just a little. We splurged for the $9 for the tolls for the turnpike so we didn’t have to trudge our way through the Homestead area. Then we got off on Highway 27 and that brought us to Clewiston. This was not a very scenic drive but we were destination bound as we wanted to get in and set up so Joe could watch the...
