I and 22 other women from Carefree went to Clewiston to go on a 4 1/2 hour tour of the sweetest town in the U.S. where the United States Sugar Corporation grows and processes sugar cane and makes orange juice. We met at the Clewiston Chamber of Commerce, saw their museum and a short film, and then were driven by bus to the fields and refineries. We moved our motorhome to this park to cut the time spent on the road traveling between home (remember home is where ever our motorhome is parked) and Fort Lauderdale. The park is located along Route 27 across the highway from Lake Okeechobee's south west shore. There were Orange Groves to the west of the park and sugar fields surrounding the park on two sides. On our last day on the Keys, we decided to relax on the beach, read, and begin to chart our course north. From 6-10 p.m. a performer named Yankee Jack was scheduled to play at the camp's outdoor pub. We heard him warming up from our campsite, and we decided to stop by. It turned out to be a great evening. Traveling with Carol, Lou & Beau ................. After we left Jacksonville, we arrived in Clewiston in just one day, and checked into the Clewiston/Lake Okeechobee KOA. It is very close to the Everglades. Mosquitoes love it here, so I don't go out after dark. Lou goes out with Beau, if he needs to. Chris, Jessica and Blade are living here in the park. May 26, 2010 - Ft. Myers to Clewiston on Lake Okeechobee

While still in Ft. Myers we felt it was time to check Dande's fuel filters since she was running about 3-4 mph slower than she usually does. The mechanic said we had built up some algae. So we added chemicals to the fuel tank and off we went. It was a perfect traveling day up the Caloosahatchee River to Clewiston, on the perimeter of the Lake. Went through 2 small locks. We spent the night after some food and brew at the notable Tiki Bar & Restaurant at Roland Martin's Fish Camp and Marina.

How time flies, its Christmas day and 6 days since the last update: Weather has been great and cool at night but we haven't had to use the heaters at night. Still getting things ship shape on the coach - we had some sun screens made for the front windows - there is a tremendous amount of heat generated if the sun shines through the big window in the front, these screens block out 80% of the UV but allow us to see out and have more privacy inside. Dec 18, 2009 - Welcome Canada Quebec event

On the 17th the nearby town of Clewiston had events to welcome the Canadians from Quebec. The day started with a golf tournament and dinner. We didn't attend, but we did go to the evening festivities in downtown Clewiston where they closed off Bond street. There were samples and booths from local vendors and local entertainers. Still here in Clewiston I see its 12 days since we made the last post, wow how time flies. Its been quite warm here and still is, they're expecting to set record high today 87 degrees F or (30 degrees C) with high humidity - phew! its been nice temps at night going down to 59/15 degrees. Sorry I messed this entry up and deleted it by mistake - will redo later Dec 12 Arrived in Clewiston without any real delays it was a straight drive down Hwy 27 it wasn’t a major interstate so there were a few traffic lights as we went through a few small towns - I think our average speed was 57 MPH so it wasn’t to bad - about 190 miles The site is large, surrounded by French Canadians and overlooks the lake in the park. Friday morning was downright cold, south Florida or Canada, where WERE we??? We got things packed up for our trip to Lake Okechobee, and then went over to the Royal Palm Hammock Trail. We left Grassy Key about 9 o’clock for our short ride of about 180 miles to Clewiston. As usual, we had the sightseers on U.S. 1 through Islamorada and Key Largo and then a little road construction sprinkled in to slow us down just a little.
