Nov 26, 2017 - rough and quiet kayak trip

We went kayaking today because Thursday was Thanksgiving, Wednesday was preparation day, Friday called for rain (but it didn't happen) and Saturday was biking day for some. We went out to the end of Pine Island to the launch site in Bokeelia and got into the water before 11 AM. We started to go out into the bay, working our way to the very end of the island by the piers because usually we see skimmers and other birds there. But, it was a bit windy and the water was rough, so we turned around and went amongst the mangroves. Water came into...

Mar 2, 2017 - Kayaking on Pine Island

We had a big group today and the parking lot isn't very big. Luckily, Nancy has a hitch on her car and can pull a trailer, so about 8 boats were transported that way! This was a good bird day, as you can see. especially for yellow-crowned night herons!

Apr 7, 2016 - Bokeelia Paddle

I haven't been on open water all year, so today was the day! It was breezy so it was a bit of work but the day was beautiful and the right temperature. The launch spot is near the end of Pine Island in a town called Bokeelia. From a protected inlet, we go out on the sound and paddle up towards the end of the island. Skimmers like to hang out on one particular pier for some reason. I think I got better pictures in prior years, but this is what I got this year. It was very hard to get clear shots because the boat was always moving and then...

Jan 22, 2015 - Kayaking on Pine Island

On this fine day, a dozen of us went out to the end of Pine Island to kayak around the shores to see what we could find. The highlight of the day was watching all the skimmers and pelicans on the piers while being in the water. The pelicans land where they wish with no regard to the line of skimmers, upsetting them and making them fly around. That delighted me, but from pictures of skimmers, I see I miss seeing their black-topped wings in flight.

Apr 3, 2014 - Bokeelia kayaking

The weather is finally right and many of the snowbirds have left so that driving there isn't so bad, making for a great day to go out to hte tip of Pine Island. That's what 15 of us did on this beautiful day! First we went north to a pier that many different kinds of birds seemed to like also. Pam took some great shots of the birds and cormorants and I am using hers to show that exciting portion of the trip. I didn't paddle out that far because of the hard work needed to paddle back against the wind. I watched from a distance. We found a...

Feb 21, 2013 - Bokeelia Kayaking

8 of us went on a beautiful kayak trip on the opposite end of Pine Island from our earlier excursion a few weeks ago. It was a beautiful day with some open water kayaking, and then around islands of mangroves. We ate lunch at a Lee County Park amongst the mangroves where there was a picnic table in the shade! There were plentiful shells in very good condition so we had great fun. I got a lion's claw shell and now want a kitty claw shell which is very tiny. I also learned how conchs start their life!

Jan 3, 2012 - Randell Research Center

I told Chic & Marilyn about the Caloosa Indian mounds and park I found last year and Chic asked that I take her there. We picked today to do that and, while the day was sunny, it was also cold and windy. We bundled up and drove out there. Pine Island is north of Sanibel and Captiva and is a lot quieter than those two islands. On one end of the island is St. Joseph's and on the north end is Bokeelia. to get there, we needed to go pst Cape Coral and a little town of Matlacha (mat-la-shay). I've taken pictures of the colorful buildings and...

Mar 8, 2011 - Final Day in South Florida :(

WP Franklin Lock Campground in Alva, FL … Tuesday, March 8, 2011 First of all, let me wish our beautiful niece Alexis a very Happy Birthday. Oh to be 23 again! We are somewhat sad to be leaving South Florida where we have lived since December 31. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, right? It’s not that we’re not ready to move on. It’s just that we looked forward to our winter trip for many months. And once we were here, we have enjoyed every day to the fullest. Well, ok … maybe Charlie can’t say he enjoyed some of those...

Jan 29, 2011 - Beautiful Bokeelia

From WP Franklin COE Park, Alva, FL … Saturday, January 29, 2011 It was a cool 45 degrees when we got up this morning, but it quickly warmed to around 75. We took our walk around the campground and stopped to chat with two nice couples. It’s always interesting to talk to other people and find out where they have been and where they are headed next. We have found out about some nice campgrounds that way. We decided to drive to La Belle to check our mail one more time today. We will be on the east coast for about 10 days, so we won’t be...
