Nov 5, 2017 - Biking and beaching

Cindy packed a lunch for us and then hooked both our bikes on the back of her truck and drove to Gasparilla Island for a day of fun in the sun! After parking at the southern end of the island, we rode our bikes back up north on the black top bike and golf cart trail for about 5.5 miles. Then we turned and stopped in the village of Boca Grande for a walk around and a stop for a beer at a cafe near the Loose Caboose at noon. We found a cute little park with a fountain in it where a family was wanting their picture taken. At the beach, we...

Feb 7, 2013 - Gasparilla Island

From WP Franklin Lock Park in Alva, FL ... Thursday, February 7, 2013 We've had a nice week just mainly hanging out around the park. Yesterday we both felt a big "draggy" so we took it easy. We did work on defrosting the fridge though. That's something that we have to do with the RV that we don't have to worry about at home. We had to remove everything from the RV fridge while it defrosted. Fortunately, we have the extra small fridge outside, so Charlie put most everything in there and the rest in a cooler with freezer blocks. We let it go...

On the Road Again

Jan 3, 2013 - Gasparilla and Boca Grande

Thursday we tour another of the Barrier Islands, Gasparilla and the town of Boca Grande. This island is accessible by car. We had a wonderful lunch at the South Beach Restaurant over looking the Gulf of Mexico. Drove to the tip of the island which is a State Park and walked up to the lighthouse that is still working. The highlight of today's tour is The Gasparilla Inn and Club serving guests for 99 years. The subtle elegance was all around us. We went on a behind the scenes tour of the Kitchen with sous chef, Seth. He showed us every nook...

Jan 1, 2013 - A wonderful spot

We had never heard of Boca Grande, though Larry. Had heard of Gasparilla Island, but he did not know why. We have learned on these boat excursions to take advantage of local knowledge when we can. Back when we left Beaufort, NC, we passed a beautiful old motor yacht named Tireless. and for several nights we found ourselves at the same marina as Tireless. One day she would come in after us, and then the next day she would leave before us and we would pass her. Turns out that Tireless is available for charter, and she spends the summer in...

Sep 25, 2011 - Cabbage Key Still Unique

The last time I stayed at the island resort of Cabbage Key was 1979, a trip that resulted in a Coast Guard search for me and my newspaper writing what was close to an obituary, but that's another story. I'm happy to say the place hasn't changed very much. The only way to get there is by boat. It sits at the northern end of Pine Island Sound at MM 60 on the ICW. There are a few more cottages but the place is still funky and visitors still sign and paste $1 bills on the walls and ceiling of the restaurant, about $3,000 worth a year. The...

Feb 28, 2011 - Boca Grande, Florida

Another beautiful day here today at Port Charlotte. We got up and checked our mail, and cousin Peter McKay and wife Michelle were not 25 miles away, staying in a condo on Gasparillo Island. I called them around 9 am, and we agreed to meet for brunch at around 10:20 or so in Boca Grande. We rode our bikes through several causeways, before arriving in the beautiful little town of Boca Grande. I think all of the Millionaires either live there or own a summer/winter home there. We met up with Pete and Michelle, and did a quick walking tour of...

Mar 18, 2009 - Boca Grande, Gasparilla Island

We headed out to lunch at the “Lock ‘n Key” in Englewood Beach, a restaurant that was recommended by Paul Hemingway. Paul was Carol’s childhood next-door neighbor in Spotswood, New Jersey, who recently moved to Englewood, Florida. After lunch, we explored the Englewood Beach area, which has many beachfront rentals, much like the Jersey shore. We then drove south to Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island. If Naples Florida has the homes of millionaires, then Boca Grande has the homes of billionaires. We all agreed that when we win the lottery,...

Nov 19, 2008 - Boca Grande Marina

Spent the night at Boca grande Marina. At high season for the tarpon run you probably couldn't get close to the place, but there was room for Stargazer and a few more if they showed up tonight. Food was great and the Key Lime pie was outstanding. Hmmmm Seems I'm getting to be more of a dessert person on this trip.
