Mar 18, 2015 - Key Deer . . . taxes . . . and ANTS!

[Patti here] Yesterday: we went to the National Key Deer Visitor Center and Refuge. Today: we worked on getting 2014 tax information together to mail to our accountant . . . Guess which was more FUN ??? The little black ant population in our new home was really getting out of hand, so John found a Home Depot about 15 miles north of us and came home with TERRO—probably the best ant-eliminating stuff that I know of. MY HERO!! 'Til next time ...

Dec 21, 2014 - Sunday in the Keys

After attending mass at St. Peter the Fisherman, we had lunch at a local landmark on Sugarloaf Key. Mangrove Mama's It is impossible to talk about the history of Mangrove Mama's without talking about the history of the Florida Keys themselves. Well, the last hundred years anyway. Bat Tower First called Glenn Key and later Perkey Key after Richter Perky, builder of the famous Sugarloaf Bat Tower, it has been said, derives it's name from the shape of nearby Indian Mounds. Most people agree, however, that the name comes from sugarloaf...

Mar 13, 2014 - Key Deer

Today we went in search of the elusive Key deer. This is a highly endangered species that only live in the Florida keys. They are tiny! There is a Key deep sanctuary on Big Pine Key so we headed south to try and catch a glimpse of one (or two). As you drive along the roads on Big Pine Key, there are many sign warning you to drive carefully to avoid the deer. Also, there are signs warning you not to feed the deer. Good thing we did not bring any deer chow! We followed one road to No Name Key (really!). We caught a quick glimpse of one in the...

Feb 11, 2013 - More Key West - 2013

We spent 2 days visiting Key West taking the trolly tour and then our own walking tour. The walking tour guided us to various addresses throughout Key West. Carol narrated what the significance was of each address. Many of these addresses were occupied by something else or had been moved do to storms. Nevertheless, it was interesting and always a learning experience. We visited the Key West Museum of Art & History. One of the most incredible pieces for me is the cross stitch piece depicting the city of Key West. The detail is amazing. The...

Feb 9, 2013 - Key West - 2013

We will be in the Florida Keys for nearly 3 weeks staying at 3 different locations. Our first park is Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina located on Big Pine Key at MM39. This is an Encore park and part of our Thousand Trails membership. We stayed for 7 nights, with full hookups at a cost of $472.50. I think this is the most we will be spending throughout the entire winter. To start our visit we took a trolley ride through the town of Key West which gave us a great overview of the historic city. It was a "hop on, hop off" type of tour...

Oct 20, 2012 - Ohio Key, Sunshine Key RV Park

October 20, 2012 Ohio Key, Florida We arrived in the Keys on October 17th. Stopped to see Leslie and Carlie Adams briefly in Key Largo before continuing on to Ohio Key, at mile marker 39, site of Sunshine Key RV Resort; one of the campgrounds in our membership plan. So, we’ll be here until October 23rd for a cost of only $20.00. Not bad! Given that it would cost $88.00 per night if we didn’t have the membership, it was a great deal. It really feels as though we are in the tropics. First, it has been close to 90 degrees every day we have...

Feb 27, 2012 - Key West again

Today was another wonderful Key day. They all are here. THE BEAST AND I ARE HOME! Went to Key West which is about 45 min. from where we are on Big Pine Key. Wanted to take care of things for the b-day girls, Nikki and Marissa, who both have their b-day's in March. We then went to lunch at Sloppy Joe's which is another favorite hang-out's of mine. Perhaps that is because it was a favorite of one of my favorite's, Ernest Hemingway. Granted, Ernest Hemingway had his issue's, but he was a dedicated writer. If I could ever do anything in my...

Feb 26, 2012 - Sun. (my mom's b-day)

Tonight I am sitting here blogging while watching the Academy awards. I will try to do some catching up. There is plenty of time as these awards go on for quite awhile. I think while I am writing, that I am just one person telling my stories. There are so many people, friends and family in my life. I may not win any awards but still, I am so fortunate to have met so many wonderful people in my journey in life thus far. I didn't ask for my family but I could not have been luckier. Just one lucky Irish lass. That being said...Today was...

Feb 23, 2012 - Weds./ Time to update

Time to blog again. Keep thinking that I will catch up on all. It may not happen, so here is what is going on today thus far. This won't be a fancy writing day. The IPad2 makes things a little trickier, also the sun factor. (Sorry for saying that, as it is known that MN is getting snow today.) This is a pool day on Big Pine Key in FL. We have met some truly wonderful people of all ages and area's in the US. Just sitting around talking for the past four hours. Soon it will be time to go home for happy hour. Today we will be featuring avocado...

Feb 19, 2012 - Sunshine Key RV Resort

Well I am over the shingles. It only took about 10 days to heal up and was never painful only itchy and the doctor gave me some cream for that. We have been having a wonderful time on the Florida Keys. We were at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park for 2 weeks. We took the glass bottom boat out to the coral reef. We had a really nice time with Pat and Carol, friends from VA, who were staying at John Pennekamp also. We went down to Bahia Honda for the day because I had stated how beautiful the beach was. Well we got to Bahia Honda and the...

Feb 14, 2011 - Heading back to Virginia

From Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina We got the bad news today that my mother is failing fast, so we have decided to leave here tomorrow and go to Virginia. It will probably take us a couple of days but hopefully we'll make it in time. That's what is so great about RVing. We have wheels and can move at any given moment. Our neighbors, Lee and Bobbie, came over and invited us to their MH for dinner. We had talked about going out but realized it was Valentine's Day so decided to eat in. They have a beautiful Monaco MH and we enjoyed a...

Feb 13, 2011 - Beautiful Sunday

From Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina We had a very full day today. Even though we had a late night last night, we got up and went to church. There were 11 adults and 3 children there with six of the adults being visitors. There was a couple from Colorado, a couple from Utah and Bill and I. Bill ended up teaching the Sunday School lesson and did an excellent job for not being prepared. After church, they had pizza which we ate outside. Amazing to do that in February! We thoroughly enjoyed talking to everyone. We went back home and changed...
