Nov 9, 2019 - Tin Can Travelers

I was invited to meet Deb & Pam for breakfast at a bistro near their new house and then to go with them to Arcadia to see vintage RVs. They live outside of Punta Gorda now, but they still have a house and properties at Carefree. There were about a dozen RVs that were "rescued", refurbished, and currently used. I like the name of the club - it's been around for 100 years! Sometimes my home seems like a rolling tin can!

Mar 28, 2019 - Rookeries on Peace River

The launch site to get to the rookeries on the Peace River is in a tiny town called Liverpool which is halfway between Punta Gorda and Arcadia. We used to see very many birds at the rookery but today we saw only a few wood storks. We moved on to another rookery and there I saw in the mangrove island a fleeting glimpse of a Roseate Spoonbill and a few herons. Most of the others only saw the wood storks in the branches up high. After I was finished shooting pictures, I came out of the mangroves and didn't see or hear anyone. I paddled around...

May 8, 2018 - One more outing to a favorite place

There is a small town called Liverpool halfway between Punta Gorda and Arcadia with a park and boat launch that is perfect for us. 8 of us went there today and met a woman named Jean who used to live at Carefree but now lives down the street we came in on. I have been at one rookery but I heard there were two here, so I have been wanting to come. Deb and Sarah wanted to come as well as Sue, Kristy, & Nancy. Joan & Barb led us there and it was a great day to be on the water! The day was sunny and hot but the humidity was down and there was a...

We went to the bluegrass show that evening and played some cards and sorry before going to the showers around 1 a.m. We got up around 9 a.m. to have something to eat before going out hunting some geocaches in a nice park on the Peace river just across the river from the K.O.A.. The park is called Morgan Park that has miles of trails that run in the woods and then over to the Peace River. This was Sat afternoon and the people were down...

Mar 13, 2015 - Arcadia Bluegrass

We left the house around noon time and drove almost 2 miles before we stopped at a new place that opened up in Cape Coral a few weeks ago. Popeyes Louisiana chicken & shrimp , we parked in the parking lot across the street at Publix market for are meal. Missy was happy to be on the road , take a look at a smile on a dogs face. It was only about a 1 1/2 hour drive to north of Arcadia on U.S. 17 at Crag's RV Resort, it was a good size place with a very nice bluegrass stage and area for camping without electric. We wanted full hook-up because...

Mar 21, 2014 - Joshua Citrus - Arcadia Florida

We drove to Arcadia about 30 miles south of Wauchula to visit Joshua Citrus grove that consists of 300 acre various types of citrus. Eve was our tour guide, they have 8 workers from Mexico who come back each year, they are reimbursed for their travel to and from Mexico, their room is provided either on the farm or in town. The 8 workers will usually earn upwards of $500 to $700 a week and they will fill one semi truck load in a day. We then drove to Joshua Creek Cemetry where we saw a very unusual grave stone, a full life image of a very...

Feb 18, 2014 - Arcadia

We took a day trip to the town of Arcadia, Florida. This is a bit inland and retains more of the "old Florida" feel than the busyness of the coastal areas. The historic downtown area has been restored and it full of antique shops. Lots and lots of antique shops! Luckily, there are lots of "husband benches" up and down the street. Prices were high so we were not too tempted by the wares. Arcadia was center of the ranching industry of Florida and also the county seat. It was devastated by hurricane Charley in 2004 but has recovered nicely....

May 5, 2013 - Sunday In The Park

We were going to go to the Prairie Preserve last Tuesday, but a small rain storm came up with about 3 inches of water. Then the water wanted to leak into our brand new travel trailer at the Rv resort where we were camping for a few days. That night we had a water leak from the skylight into the floor of the camper. We had pots and pans on the floor most of the night. So we came home for a few days until the rain stopped and the water went down before we returned to the preserve. The road from the main highway runs to the preserve which is...

Apr 30, 2013 - Nature boat ride

Up above Ardadia, at an inlet to the Peace River, is a place called Nav-a-gator that is a restaurant, with a museum, a tiki bar, and a business that offers boat rides to see what's on the river. 10 of us went up to have lunch and then enjoy a boat ride on a pontoon for an hour and a half to see birds and gators and whatever. It poured while we were eating lunch, but stopped for our ride - how convenient! This place is eclectic but very interesting. The food is great and plentiful. The captain of the boat is very knowledgeable and...

Jan 27, 2013 - Arcadia, FL - 2013

We found a Carefree Park called Big Tree RV Park at a very reasonable 50% off and less than $20 per night. This week was scheduled to re-visit Captiva and kayak the Ding Darling State Park, kayak the Peace River, visit friends Sharon & Mark and what ever else come to mind. I picked up a form of the flu again, but this time it did not want to go away and I felt really bad. The flu shot works to minimize how sick I got, but did not speed anything up getting over it. I was glad that JC went with John & Carol to kayak the mangroves and open...

Jan 12, 2012 - A Month Off

After delivering our frozen cookie dough to Georgia, we drove up above Atlanta to get more frozen goodies to take to a Sam's Club warehouse in Arcadia, Florida. We are both pretty truck sick by now and just want to "get r done" and commence with our downtime! As we are beginning a new year, we have some year-to-date numbers from our company. Our paid miles were around 148k, fuel costs were 92.3k and tolls at almost 7k! Crazy huh? So I think that is very deserving of a nice long break! When we arrived again at our winter residence, we...

Mar 19, 2009 - Last day at Live Oak Park

Hello friends...Today is kind of a sad day. We are packing everything to get into the travel mode. The patio is dismantled... The shower is ready for the plants... The dishes are all put up. I just noticed the diningroom table isn't fastened down yet... one more job for Dave to do! I decided my job is writing an update! I added a few pictures. I worked hard all day trying to finish up my jacket. I took it almost finished to the quilt group. They wanted to see what it was going to look like. I had to quit sewing because I ran out of thread...
