May 13, 2012 - Conquering the Monster Mile

We made a short trip to Dover International Speedway on Saturday so I could realize my Christmas gift from the family and celebrate Mother's Day. Sue and I along with Winnie, Kyle and Shane went to Dover so I could drive 10 laps on the Monster Mile in a NASCAR Sprint Cup car. I'm not a big NASCAR fan, but I do love car racing and this was an awesome experience to get behind the wheel of a 400+HP race car. This was the best Christmas present I've ever gotten. We had lunch at the track before my session. I made pulled pork and slaw. After the...

Oct 20, 2011 - The Capitol, Dover AFB

A very melancholy day - Mom's 100th birthday - Oh how I wish we were going to be with her today, Saturday, or any day for that matter. She is missed! Al, Em, and I spent a good part of the day in Dover visiting the new and old state capitol buildings and then, after a special lunch at a Koren BBQ restaurant, we toured the Air Museum at Dover Air Force Base. The old and new capitol buildings are part of a complex called First State Heritage Park. Old buildings and new, historic and cultural sites, are all shared by state and city agencies....

Aug 31, 2010 - Dover Delaware

When we left Ocean City we drove directly north into Delaware. I didn't remember that Delaware was the first state in America. We toured the original state building and the docent fill us in on a lot of history that I didn't remember. Delaware is lovely and Dover is a nice city that would be fun to spend more time. We crossed back over into Maryland and had to go through Annapolis to get back to Baltimore Freightliner.

NORTHEAST TRIP 2010

May 12, 2010 - Air Mobility Command Museum, DE

Today we made a trip to the Air Mobility Command Museum on base. We saw displays of the history of the Air Mobility Command. Their mission is to be able to move people and equipment to anywhere in the world. We saw C-5s, C-17s, C-130's, and other cargo and passenger aircraft. We also saw a display on the "candy bomber", who dropped little parachutes attached to bags of candies for the children in Berlin, during the Berlin airlift. Well, I guess I will need to grill steaks tonight. This is Carol's belated "Mother's Day" dinner. Carol...

May 11, 2010 - Dover AFB, DE

Well, its Monday. It is another cold morning with overcast skies. We are expecting rain this afternoon. We decided to extend our stay here another 2 days. Thursday we move to Earle Navy Weapon Station in New Jersey. We really like this place. We have a nice open space with green grass and some shade trees. Very relaxing and wouldn't mind returning. Ther's also a nice walking path, Carol and I went for a walk today, but because it was cold, especially when the winds are blowing we had to cut our walk short. We'll try tomorrow again. We had...

May 7, 2010 - Dover AFB, DE

Looks like we will be here until May 12 before moving to New Jersey. Today was a beautiful day so I decided to wash the roof of our RV. It was getting bad with mold building up. Most of these RV parks will not allow any car washing, but I'm glad I had the chance to wash our RV and our car. They both really needed it. This is a great place to kick back and relax. The weather to the north is still getting rain passing through the north east states so we are not in a hurry to move. According to the weather forecast, this weekend will be very...

May 3, 2010 - Dover AFB, DE

Today is very windy overcast and expecting some rain and thunder showers. We decided to stay home and catch up with our journal entries. We have been moving so fast we don't get enough time to make entries. We do not have a specific itinerary for the next 5 months. We plan to cover all of the New England states and part of Canada. We have our 45th class reunion planned on Kauai in July but our attendance is questionable. We plan to be in Las Vegas (Nellis AFB) on or about October 1st and we will be there for 6 weeks. We have a family...

May 2, 2010 - Dover AFB, DE

Today is moving day. On the road again... We departed Andrews AFB at 10am and headed to Dover AFB, DE. It was a very nice day and the drive was easy. It took us 2.5 hours to travel 105 miles. After we crossed the Annapolis Bay Bridge our GPS took us through the country roads to Dover. Thank you for GPS... it is the best travel accessory!!! No more buying and flipping through the road maps. We got here about 12:30 and since there are no reservations we were fortunate to find the last site with full hook-up (Electric, Water & Sewer). God has...

Jan 7, 2010 - First Night

First night on the road we stayed in Dover Delaware. We stayed at a Super Walmart. I know ...I don't like Walmart but sadly there is always people around so it is usually a good place to boondock...only as a last resort...is the rule. Smaller highways don't have very many truck stops.

Nov 15, 2009 - Delaware to Maryland

We started off in Dover by finding their state house. Delaware is the second smallest state, and it's state complex was proportional - a few beautiful old red brick buildings gathered around a beautiful "green" with the road going around and through the middle of it. From Dover we drove down by the Atlantic Coast and over the boarder into Maryland. Right by the border is Ocean City, another huge tourist destination, with the beach lined with hotels, gift shops, restaurants, and miniature golf courses! (Of course, a lot is shut this time of...

Sep 25, 2008 - Day 33

It's 7 a.m. eastern time and we have already finished the proclamation at the Delaware capitol. Frances woke us up this morning about a quarter of 5:00 worried about the storm moving into the area and wanting to get out of the area before we were caught in it. Last night when she came back from doing some shopping at the Wal Mart and told me the weather news (Steve was already asleep, it had been a long driving day for him), we asked our Heavenly Father to keep the storm at bay so we could make it to these two capitols that are in the path...

Aug 1, 2008 - Dover, DE

Friday we decided to drive to Dover, Delaware for what would be our thirty-seventh state and sixteenth state capitol. From where we were camping we were a short, twenty minute drive and $3 toll to the state of Delaware. As we crossed the Delaware River we were greeted by more bulk oil storage tanks, refineries, power plants, oil tankers chugging down the river, and, when looking back to the Jersey side, the Salem nuclear power plant. We drove down Delaware 9, a supposedly scenic road which was not entirely impressive, until we were...
