Dec 16, 2020 - Merry Christmas
I'm getting our Christmas Greeting out early because we had an early season snow storm today. Since we only had 0.3" of snow last year, I figured I'd take advantage of the snow to get a picture of Winnie decked out with her Christmas lights and the snow. The coastal storm dropped about 3-4" of snow here in northern Delaware before tuning to sleet, and then rain and wind. Depending on the overnight temperatures and the amount of rain, there may be some snow left over for pictures tomorrow. Sue and I hope everyone is healthy and getting ready...

Nov 26, 2020 - Happy Thanksgiving
We're not traveling this Thanksgiving and as matter of fact we didn't leave the house. Many of you who receive this are also Facebook friends so you've seen one of the pictures and got our holiday greeting. We usually spend the holiday with Shane and Jess and Jess's family, but circumstances this year have made that not a wise choice. So Sue and I enjoyed a Thanksgiving Dinner for 2 at home. As you can see in the pictures, I haven't figured out how to cook a turkey dinner for 2. We had enough for about 10. There's plenty of leftovers for...

Nov 12, 2020 - Home for the Winter
We headed for home today after a wonderful week at the Delaware beaches (or at the shore for those of you from NJ). You couldn't have asked for better weather for November. I think I'm liking this global warming. We got a surprise visit from our son Jared on Sunday. He and Sue did a spin around the campground on the bikes after eating a lunch from Casapulla's subs. After a night of heavy rain, we drove north to Smyrna to drop Winnie at Parkview RV to get our propane service valve repaired. Before saying goodby, we had to unload the...

Nov 7, 2020 - Camping on the Inlet
Delaware Seashore State Park is located on the Indian River Inlet Between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach. The campground is split in half by the inlet. We’re stying in the north campground. There are over 400 campsites between the two. This campground is popular with fisherman as it is right on the inlet and there is a state run marina nearby. I can remember a long time ago leaving from the marina on a boat for a diving trip off Cape Henlopen. We dove on a couple of wrecks off the coast. All I remember is getting seasick between dives...

Nov 5, 2020 - A Stop at the Cape
After voting on Tuesday, we headed south to the Delaware beaches. Our first stop was Cape Henlopen State Park for a couple of days. Surprisingly in early November it was tough to get a camping reservation during the week and all sites were booked for the week end. We’ve never camped at Cape Henlopen before. We found it to be a really nice campground. There is a lot to see and explore so I think we’ll come back again in the future. Spring and fall shoulder seasons look like the best time to visit. The weather for our 2 days at Henlopen was...

Oct 25, 2020 - Close to Home
We ventured about 15 miles from home this week to try out the campground at Lum's Pond State Park. It's a nice full hook-up campground in New Castle County established in 1963 and recently upgraded. It was close enough to home for Sue to take care of Ryleigh while attending remote school. Mid-week it was nearly empty, but by Thursday most sites were filled for the week end. Lums Pond itself is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Delaware. It’s not a natural lake, but an impoundment of St. Georges Creek. The creek was damned in the...

Oct 18, 2020 - Covid Cruise Part 3
I've gotten antsy sitting at home, so I decided to take some short trips and see Delaware. We've traveled all over the US, but have spent comparatively little time in our home state so over the next couple of weeks (months) depending on the weather we are going to visit Delaware State parks. Our first outing was to Trap Pond State park in far southern Delaware, well it's only about 2 hours from home. Our drive took us through eastern Maryland on US 301 and MD 313 to avoid the traffic along DE 1 or US 13. Trap Pond is an older state park...

Oct 16, 2020 - Coming Home
Left Rehoboth around 10. Originally planned to stop at White Clay Creek Preserve in the extreme southeast section of Pennsylvania on the way home. However, the weather forecast indicated a 90-100% chance of rain during the early afternoon when I would have been there so I decided to come straight home. Perhaps I'll catch this spot next year. Coincidently, the GPS took me on this convoluted route home that had me on I-95 just south of Newark, DE so I was less than 10 miles from the Preserve. Arrived home at 1:50.

Oct 15, 2020 - Exploring Rehoboth
Another leisurely start to the day, again heading out at 10:15. Only a general idea of what I wanted to do today…ride down Route 1 to the end of Dewey then back into Rehoboth to perhaps walk down memory lane by going past some of the old haunts from when we vacationed here when I was a kid. First detour took me back to the Rehoboth Beach Country Club on the Rehoboth Bay. A large circle of rather pricey looking homes circles the golf course. Apparently this is a relatively new development since some homes are still being built. On Monday...

Oct 14, 2020 - Cape Henlopen State Park
After 3 rather dreary days, an abundance of sunshine today! Took my time getting started this morning to allow the day to warm up a bit. A very pleasant 63 degrees when I started out at 10:15. Eventually warmed up to a still comfortable 72. Today’s ride was the main event. When I started researching bike rides in the area, this 15-mile regional loop around the perimeter of Cape Henlopen State Park caught my eye so I fleshed out the rest of the trip around that idea. I took a number of side trips nearly doubling the basic mileage to 28.5...

Oct 12, 2020 - Getting the Lay of the Land
Rained today. Sometimes quite heavily w/ the wind blowing. Decided this would be primarily a reconnaissance day. Took my time getting started then after stopping at the Cape Henlopen Park Office to pick up some maps, spent a couple of hours in the late morning driving around Lewes. First town in the first state. Also scoped out part of the trail I’ll be using for the regional loop bike ride later this week. There is a hiking trail south of Rehoboth where the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal empties into the Rehoboth Bay called Thompson Island I thought...

Oct 11, 2020 - Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge
Rolled out of town at 9:15. Stopped at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, a short distance southeast of Smyrna, arriving around noon. They have an auto tour w/ 18 stops that is 12 miles long. My original thought was to follow it on my bike. However due to the likelihood of rain in the forecast I decided to drive it. There are a number of “pools” which are fresh water, created by dikes. The road for the most part runs across these dikes, then on the east side the water is brackish which is defined as a mixture of salt and fresh water....
