Sep 20, 2012 - Sept 19, Pompeii!
Off this morning on the 10:15AM train to Pompeii. It was a 45 minute ride and we got off at a station adjacent to the site of Ancient Pompeii. All I can say is Wow! It was amazing. I don't know what I was expecting but certainly not the extensive excavation that they have done on this archeological site. Just an aside, a few years ago I read a fictionalized book about Pompeii (believe that was actually the title) and found it fascinating almost wish I was reading it now but since it was about 600 pages don't know if I will do it again. The...Jump to full entry
Sep 20, 2012 - Roma!
We left Naples at 11:50 this morning and traveled to Rome by train. The train ride was 1 hour and 10 minutes. What a difference! I love Rome! a lovely vibrant city. The apartment is terrific. An old building but very Modern apartment. We arrived at the apartment around 2PM and after checking in found a restaurant for lunch. Good food but they tried to scam us, so even tho it is just down the street don't think they will will see us again on our stay (except walking by!!!). We walked over to St. Peter's, huge line so we made no attempt to...Jump to full entry
Sep 19, 2012 - Sept 18, Capri
Today to the Isle of Capri (pronounced KAH pree). What a lovely day. Despite being very commercial the Island is charming and so very beautiful. We took a bus from Capri to Anacapri, which was at one time a rival village with a draw bridge that they could use to close off the only path in. It is high up the cliffs from Capri. I will have to read more about this when I have time, as I have only bits of info in my brain from things heard and read today. Our favorite thing was the chairlift ride to the very top of Mt. Solaro, a defunct...Jump to full entry
Sep 17, 2012 - Napoli/Naples
We arrived in Naples around 12:15 yesterday and after getting our ticket reservations for Rome on Thursday, we took a taxi to our Naples apartment. We were met by Marco's (landlord) father who showed us in and gave us our keys. After Venice and Florence, Naples was a bit of a culture shock. It is a large city not at it's best, Dirty streets, graffiti everywhere. We went to the Archeological Museum after we dropped off our bags at the apartment, which seemed to be in an even worse area then our apartment! Last night we decided to just go...Jump to full entry
Sep 14, 2012 - Galleria dell'Accademia
Yesterday was a day of visual overload! We went to the Accademia in the Morning (8:15 prepaid entry) and then on to the Uffizi at 11:00, with of course considerable window shopping in between! You are not allowed to take pictures at either gallery so those sculptures that I have uploaded are from the courtyards and churches in route. The Accademia, of course, is the home of Michelangelos's David, which the three of us had seen over 50 years ago at the Metropolitan in NYC, during a class trip. At that time, at the age of 16 I was trying...Jump to full entry
Sep 13, 2012 - On to Florence!
So, on Tuesday, we sadly said goodbye to Venice and caught a train to Florence. The train was very pleasant, clean and comfortable. In just over 2 hours we arrived in Florence and were met by Mario, the charming, handsome, and very accommodating landlord of our Florence apartment. This place is phenomenal! Located around the corner from the Duomo on one side and San Lorenzo on the other. From our bedroom windows we can lean out and see the Duomo, from the bathroom, kitchen and living room windows we can see S Lorenzo. The furnishings are...Jump to full entry
Sep 9, 2012 - Doge's Palace San Marco SQ
Today we went to the Doge's palace in San Marco SQ. The Doge was the highest elected official, or Chief Magistrate, in Venice from around 700 to the end of the Republic in 1797. The Palace is quite grand once inside we were limited in where we could take pictures. After the tour we had lunch in the cafe located in the Palace (not bad!). Elaine and Ginny went on to do some shopping and I did some wandering and getting lost before returning to our apartment. Tomorrow we are off to Padua, which claims to be the oldest city in northern Italy,...Jump to full entry
Sep 8, 2012 - Murano and Burano
We spent the day traveling to the Islands of Murano and Burano. It was lovely traveling on the water there was a breeze and different feel to the air which although only in the low 80s feels much hotter in the sunshine. Murano, famous for it's Murano Glass, is certainly fascinating. We watched an artist at his work on two 'simple' pieces. Amazing! (no pictures allowed or at least no flash and I didn't want to miss anything). We then spent quite some time wandering from shop to shop looking at the pieces which ranged from stick to exquisite...Jump to full entry
Sep 6, 2012 - Venice!
We finally arrived in Venice at around 2:45 their time this afternoon. We left our house at 9:50 yesterday morning, drove about 10 minutes when I remembered that I had forgotten our folder with VERY important papers and receipts in it. So we turned around and drove back (in the pouring rain!) to get the folder, only to discover we had left the garage door open. A quick trip to Southbury got us there in time for our limo and Elaine, due to her familiarity with the area was able to direct the driver around a jam on the highway. Got to JFK...Jump to full entry

Oct 22, 2010 - Home
We Arrived home around 4PM yesterday. We stopped in Walterboro SC. to put flowers on my grandparent's grave. Overnight stop was Fredricksberg, VA. Cloe, Satchel and Kellie were glad to see us! The leaves were still very pretty on the ride up through NY and actually still pretty here in CT. I felt a let down the last few days that the trip was over but on reflection now, I am glad to be home and I am sure Elaine feels the same. Thank you to all the friends and family who helped make this trip so special. Eric before we left, Kim and...Jump to full entry
