In 1927, PEZ was invented in Vienna, Austria by Eduard Haas III. He marketed it as an adult breathmint and alternative to smoking. The name comes from the German word for peppermint - pfefferminz. By 1935, Haas needed a larger factory and built it in Czechoslovakia. PEZ was originally sold in small metal tins until, in 1948, Oscar Uxa patented a small mechanical box that dispensed the tablets.
