Jul 7, 2011 - 7th July - Old Mystic

7th July - Seaport Campground, Old Mystic. Spent a couple of nights in Old Mystic. A very pretty seaport with a brilliant name! Old Mystic is in Connecticut and exudes New England charm. We visited the restaurant Mystic Pizza were the film with Julia Roberts was filmed and had a wonderful meal at the S&P Oyster Company restaurant located on the water. Seaport Campground was full of slightly aged 'rockers' with their enormous 40ft plus RVs. Our RV looked like a baby in comparison and we wondered if we might bump into any of the 'rockers' at...

The Great Escape

May 23, 2011 - Old Mystic, CT

Mon, 23 May: After more than two weeks of visiting family in northern New Jersey it was finally time to "roll wheels". We had a nice breakfast, cleaned up and got ready to hit the road. Everything went well and we logged our departure from FlaNet RV Park at 0915. We headed east on I 80 and, having missed the morning rush, made good time to I 287, which we took north to Mahwah, NJ—just south of the New York state line. We topped off our diesel tank at a Pilot Truck Stop. Fuel in New Jersey is comparatively inexpensive. We took 33.45...

Jun 21, 2010 - Day 101 - Mystic and Newport by the sea

Caryn and I visited the wonderful little town of Mystic this morning and then decided to take a preview of Rhode Island since it was only about a dozen miles up the road. We kept going and ended up in Newport...still less than 60 miles from 'home'. Great drive, beautiful country. I love the New England architecture and the cleanliness of, it seems, everything. After our day of exploration we had to go to Mystic Pizza for dinner...how do you ignore the name of a movie? And it just happened to be fabulour pizza. I think the best crust I have...

Jun 20, 2010 - Day 100 - STATE #26 - CONNECTICUTT

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY DADS. Caryn and I both agreed that today was the longest 145 miles we have ever driven. We made one short stop to get a bite to eat and let Hunter do his thing and it took us nearly six hours. If the normal traffic around the George Washington Bridge and then heading north on 95 is anything close to what we experienced today, I don't know how people live long lives (not due to accidents...but to stress)~! I'm so glad I had nothing else planned today other than to simply get to my next destination. I wasn't stressed...but...

Aug 8, 2009 - A Slow Day in Mystic

Another great day in Connecticut with lows in the mid fifties, highs in the lower seventies, no rain and low humidity. Increasing heat and humidity is predicted for the next few days so it is a good time to end our visit. Our tourist activities today were limited to a trip to New London to visit the Coast Guard Academy where I began my college career in 1960. This was my first trip back to this particular area since I departed the academy but not a lot had changed. After touring the academy we did our daily walk along the waterfront in New...

Aug 7, 2009 - Newport Rhode Island

Today was a perfect day for touring with highs around 80 degrees after a morning low of 59 degrees. There was a light breeze, low humidity and almost no clouds in the sky. I wish we could bottle and save days like these. Our trip today was to Newport, Rhode Island. Newport is home to the Tennis Hall of Fame, the location where Ted Turner won the Americas Cup Yachting race and dozens of home of the rich and famous of the past and present. Many of the homes were only part time residences in the summer months for the robber barons of the...

Aug 6, 2009 - Relocation to Connecticut

Our travel today took us through many toll plazas, the southern part of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and into Connecticut. I believe the tolls were about $10.00 total for Maine and New Hampshire and thankfully they stopped at the Massachusetts border. At least Maine and New Hampshire were using their toll funds to work on the roads and the Maine and New Hampshire Freeways (I-95) were in good shape. The balance of the trip on toll free roads also found the roads to be satisfactory with a few rough spots traversing...
