Nov 12, 2019 - Home, Newington, CT

We made it! We left at 8 AM and drove 120 miles through cold rain and some mixed precipitation. Fortunately the ground temps got close but never reached freezing. Arriving home at 11 we were stressed out but happy to be home safe! It turns out that the snow totally missed us. Although it got much colder in the afternoon, we never got any snow! Oh well, we got home early! And I bet those slushy roads got a lot more slippery when they froze! Camper note: I found that the left rear tire on the camper was almost bald, and the right rear tire...

Oct 19, 2019 - Going To Texas

We are making a 'quick' trip to Texas and trying to see some stuff along the way. The purpose of our trip is to celebrate Andy's engagement. attend an engagement party, and meet Andy's future in-laws. Along the way we will stop and see Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry, visit Janet's sister Laure, and meet up with friends Paul and Sandy in Tyler TX. Getting the camper ready still involves some work even though we just had it out a few weeks ago. I pretty much check everything, especially the tires and suspension. I pack lots of tools so...

Apr 30, 2019 - Camper Maintenance

Our 2012 Montana 3150RL is now 7 years old and there are lots of things that need to be done. Over the winter we pursued a few needs that we have recognized for a long time. Our mattress was not particularly high quality and is pretty old, so we shopped around and ended up with a good quality replacement from Camping World, which is known for high prices but I have found several things that are high quality and bargain priced like folding bikes, outdoor furniture, and mattresses. We were able to see the mattresses at the local store, and...

Summer & Fall 2019

Apr 18, 2019 - Home, Newington, CT

The end of another snowbird season! We are happy to be home and see our grandchildren and Connecticut family and friends. We have lots to think about this spring and summer! Janet and I need to decide what we will do next winter. We have a 2 events that we want to be home for around the New Year's weekend. Should we stay home for the winter or can we find a way to get to Arizona? The problem is that the roads are too snowy and icy to leave with the camper in January. We would have to take the camper south in Nov or Dec and then come back....

Janet and I are anxious to get out and travel in the camper! We are planning another winter in Arizona at the Pueblo El Mirage RV Resort, and we are both looking forward to it! We both enjoy road trips and we are both are getting a little bored with Connecticut. We get restless when the weather gets cold early and we can't enjoy the outdoors, like it did this year. Before we go we will spend Thanksgiving in St Albans with Janet's mother Rose, and we have managed to get all our kids, their spouses, and our grandchildren there to make it a...

Aug 1, 2018 - HOME

I am looking forward to sleeping in my own bed and I want to install the part that I hope will fix the camper hydraulics. Connecticut is pretty hot and very humid. It doesn't have to be awfully hot for the humidity to make it oppressive. Every day is in the 90's with humidity above 80%. Yuck. I am going to perform the minimum maintenance to put the camper into storage for 2 reasons: it is too hot to do some of the work, and we might take the camper out again in August or September. It turns out that the new solenoid did not fix the...

Jul 13, 2018 - DEPARTURE

We have not used our camper much over the past few summer-times for a variety of reasons. In 2014 and 2017 we spent the summers taking care of our infant grandchildren 5 days a week. In the summer of 2016 we took a single weekend trip to St Johnsbury VT with my brother and sister-in-law to break in his new camper. Only in 2015 did we do any significant camping, with a 6 week trip that included our Adventure Caravan trip to the Canadian Maritimes. In our conversations while we were on the road this past winter we resolved to get out the...

Getting ready to travel! It has been a whole year since we have been out in the camper! We got home from Utah last December and winterized and stored the Montana, and since we took care of our new grandson Henry over the summer we haven't used it since. It is now 5 years old and is showing it's age a little bit. I am finding it is good to be a little handy in order to fix small things, and other people might think this is a good time for a trade-in! We will be a little overloaded this time! We have some Christmas presents to bring to...

We're home!! We always enjoy our time in the camper and our travels, but we are always glad to be home. As we get closer to home we become anxious to get there and impatient to get the travel over with. The entire trip went well and we saw far more than we expected. Janet mixed in a variety of smaller parks that are not well known like Hovenweep and Colorado National Monument, and they turned out to be gems. Our arrival was perfect. We got home, spent a few hours transferring our clothes and personal items to the house, and then the...

We had some great news at the end of July: Maggie and Kevin are expecting our second grandchild in March! We did some quick planning and decided that since we cannot travel with the camper in the northeast before April 1 due to snow and ice, we are going to stay home this winter. We thought about going to AZ and coming home March 1st but the weather would still be too wintery. Maggie is due March 15 and we will be here to help her over the winter and for the baby's arrival. In the meantime Maggie swore us to secrecy until she and Kevin...

Apr 10, 2016 - HOME AGAIN!

Planning the trip for a weekend transit of the northeast was a good idea and I definitely think we will do it this way again. Last year we had a deadline to get home and arrived on a Thursday, and I recall that I-287, I-684, and I-84 were all really awful with heavy traffic and aggressive drivers. This year the roads were challenging enough and weekend traffic was much more tolerable. Sunday morning was cold at about 30 degrees but surprisingly dry, since we had clear skies all night and a brisk wind to dry the roads. We got up early and...

Dec 12, 2015 - Getting Ready & Departure

Somehow, without realizing it, we became snowbirds! During our year-long trip of 2012-13, we spent 2 & 1/2 months of the winter in El Mirage, just outside Phoenix Arizona, and enjoyed it a lot. We stayed home in the winter of 2014 and moved to Connecticut, and it was a rude reminder of what we missed and a great motivator to make a plan for the future to avoid winter. We had a lot of fond memories of the Southwest: spring training baseball, the desert, the RV park, and the friends we made, so we went to El Mirage again in February and March...
