Dec 26, 2012 - Christmas 2012

Another wonderful Christmas surrounded by family and friends. Although the weather was a bit stormy in the early morning, the roads were clear and safe by the time everyone made their way to our house for presents and dinner. Joan has been in Orlando at Abby's house for several weeks now, and Baby Gavin flew from Idaho Falls with his grandparents--Clarke and Susan--to celebrate Christmas in the warm weather and sunshine! Bruce and Neesha drove from CT to FL, so all four grandparents had the pleasure of seeing Gavin open his Christmas...

Dec 26, 2012 - Preparations for FL Trip

Mike and I spent the day preparing to leave for FL. First we had to "undecorate." We took down the Christmas tree, packed up all of the ornaments, then went outside to take down the house lights. It's so much easier to undecorate than it is to put everything up! I vacuumed and cleaned up the house from yesterday's partying, then we finished our packing of clothes, etc. Mike is our resident car packer, and he did an excellent job! I'm sure that he double-checked the boat, too! All day long, Mr. Stripes was awake (very unusual) and kept me in...

Dec 14, 2012 - Preparing for Okeechobee

Mike and I are looking forward to another trip to FL and especially to escaping the cold weather here in the north. We plan to leave for Okeechobee on December 27. We had a great spring, summer, and fall; but it's time to get back into shorts and sandals! At the end of May, we took a wonderful land/cruise trip to Alaska. The scenery was a beautiful as everyone told us it would be, our guides were knowledgeable and fun, and the cruise allowed us an up close look at the dwindling glaciers. It was a terrific experience--a trip that we would...

Dec 26, 2011 - Christmas With Family

We had 13 people for Christmas dinner, and although some were disappointed that there was no snow, we all had a great time. I guess I'm required to make brisket, and thanks to my "old" friend Rhoda's recipe, it always seems to please. The age range ran from Jean Burokas at 90 years young, to Timothy John Burokas at 13 months! It is fun to have a baby around again, as the gift-giving thing has lost its luster for most of us older ones, but it's so much fun to see a little guy tear into the wrapping paper. We're lucky to have all that we need...

Dec 19, 2011 - Too Cold to be Here!!

Wow! It's been cold the last few days and nights, but as is with the weather in New England, it's supposed to warm up to around 50 in a few days. We'll take that, as we're tired of being cooped up in the house. We do get out for our daily walk (and Mike is more willing to walk farther lately), but I'd rather be walking in a tee shirt and capris! We took Mike's Mom (Justine) and Aunt (Jean) out for dinner yesterday to celebrate Justine's 89th birthday. Had a nice time. I think that I have everything--notes, etc.--ready so that I can feel...

Dec 11, 2011 - Preparations for FL

Sunday, December 11 I've just started our blog again. I thought it would give me a chance to post a few pictures from cold CT, holiday family pics, etc. Also, Santa brought Mike and I an early present--a new digital camera. Our old Sony was great, but somehow it acquired a black dot on the inside of the lens. Even Mike can't take it apart to fix it; and to have that done would probably cost almost as much as a new camera. The Sony was about ten years old, and not waterproof. Since we spend so much time in and around water--best to upgrade....

Dec 30, 2010 - The Race to the Sun--1st Day

Well, the escape from freezing temperatures has begun! Hopefully, we’ll experience warmer temps in FL this year than we did last year. It seems that the cold of winter came to CT early this year, with the lake frozen over for about a month. People have been (safely) ice skating and ice fishing for several weeks. We had very little snow--until 10 inches fell on the day after Christmas, so the ice made a beautiful platform on which to stand and view the bottom of the lake. The neighborhood kids were frequently seem lying on the ice looking...

Dec 31, 2009 - Off We Go!

Well, here we are packed and ready to go. Notice the new car? We really weren't planning on that, but..........our 2000 Explorer bit the dust! After readying it for the trip south, the oil pump went, and I guess that causes engine damage most of the time. We didn't want to take a chance on having vehicle trouble on the way, especially towing a boat. We found a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with only 6K miles. Like a new car. So, it's all set up for towing, and we had a few days to try it out and get used to it. We're packed with both...
